I honestly think Richardson is one of, if not the best trainers around. His ability to observe a fighters weakness, and create a gameplan around it is unrivaled IMO. He takes underdogs and makes them winners.
Hopkins-Trinidad
Hopkins-Tarver
Hopkins-Pavlik
Mosley-Margarito
All fights where an underdog kicked the crap out of the favourite, and 2 of the wins were by KO. Can anyone else think of other examples where he made the underdog the winner?
Also, thoughts on him as a trainer?
yeah i didnt believe he could because i thought he was shot, but i would say thats a good gameplan for shane, better than using his crappy jab to keep distance and give margo leverage, lol............
naz is good, but he is overrated, like i said, i think someone else couldve gotten nard' to beat jt decisively .....and you know i love jt.......
Bernard did beat JT decisively, in the rematch.
He just got no credit for it. :nonono:
That may be true, but you know damn well you didn't believe it.
You and I talked online the day before the fight about how Shane was most likely going to get wrecked.
It's no fault of ours, shit, everybody expected Shane to get wrecked because of the horrible performance against Mayorga.
Naazim is a damn good trainer, and deserves respect.

he is overrated, this is the man who couldnt tell hopkins to not be a homo and let his hands go.......TWICE!!!!!!.......The same that didnt tell hopkins to be immpressive in a major PPV infomercial to build even more anticipation for the DLH match.....his brilliant "gameplan" to contain the incredible beast Howard ****in Eastman, was to run like a deer...... :lol1:
my brother doesnt get million dollar paydays, and he told me, "if shane can keep margarito offbalance and frustraded with his physical strenght, he will **** him up easily by punching fast from midrange(especially right hands to the temple, since margo's chin has proven to be rock solid) and then tying him up....."
anyone who is not a moron can come up with good gameplans, theres a lot of intangibles that prevent them form working...............................................

Thing with Richardson is that in the heat of the battle he always stays even keel. If I was a fighter, I would be comforted going to my corner and listening to him, he's like an old sage. He just commands trust and respect from you and I think that's just as important as anything.
Plus like so many of you said, he draws up great gameplans.
If I was a fighter he's the guy I would want in my corner.

That's a hell of an article Silencers links us up to in this thread, if you guys haven't read it yet, I suggest you do.
I'm chillin' with a friend just now, so i'll have to check it out later. I'll bump this up when i've read it :boxing:
i liked buddy.
people forget at one time a lot of his fighters were doing well.
as far as the stopping fights early. some of it is debatable but it's not like his fighters were gonna win anyway.
his last disputable stoppage was paulie right? what was paulie gonna do in a few more rounds? he hadn't done shit the entire fight. he was taking a beating.
The one thing I do like about McGirt is his willingness to stop fights. He won't allow his fighters to take unnessasary punishment. Although, I think that Nazim would stop fights too if his fighter was taking too much. However, he's never been in that situation. :lol1:
Kenny Weldon told me years ago that I had the potential to be a great coach, but I never would be because I love my fighters too much. I didn’t understand what he meant then, but I think I do now.

what and have him charging into the damn ring as soon as you get hit?
mcgirt is an ok trainer, but he is seriously over the top with stopping fights

Yeah, some really good lines in that corner.

A pretty good article on Naazim, written by Bernard Fernandez.
Thanks for the link, I'm reading it right now.
Good post, bro.
Yea, Richardson is very underrated because, as you said, he only really trains Hopkins. But just look at what he did for Shane in such a short time, he really does deserve a lot more credit. Roach devised a great plan for Pac against DLH, but apart from that he's no where near as good as Richardson IMO. And Steward, McGirt...hell naw. Richardson is way better than those guys..
McGirt is horrible. Roach is a bit overrated as well, a lot of the guys he trained were already great by the time he got a hold of them. Kinda like Emmanuel Steward.
You could see Naazim's hand in Mosley last night. Shane was throwing the right hand a lot more than usual. He actually went to the body consistently. AND he worked the jab better than he ever has in his entire career.
All credit to Mosley for taking Margarito out, but Naazim's master craftsmanship deserves respect as well.
Richardson is my favorite trainer out there. His ability to study a fighter's flaws and come up with a gameplan to exploit them is unrivaled right now, IMO.
Aside from Hopkins, he doesn't train anybody else on the big stage. That's why he's been so underrated for so long, in my view.
Guys like Freddie Roach and Emmanuel Steward who train multiple guys at a time, somehow end up getting all the glory. But really, I ask you, which of the three would you rather have in your corner?
Also, you gotta love Richardson always looking out for his fighter. He raised concern about Margarito's illegal wraps, and may have saved Shane from getting really hurt in there. Back in 2001 he did the same thing with Trinidad's wraps for Hopkins.
Oh, and T, do a search for threads created by me in NSB. Find my Richardson tribute thread, I think you'll enjoy it. ;)

I'll take a look.
Yeah, I love listening to him in the corner. Sometimes he even comes out with some great lines that make you think.

I know he can't take all the credit. But there's no doubt (IMO) that Richardson has helped them both a lot. Look at Hopkins without Richardson, then with him. To me, he looks a lot better with Richardson. I just think the way he can create a gameplan based on fighters weaknesses is awesome, I never saw Hopkins doing what he did to Pavlik (I expected a much closer fight), or what Shane did to Margarito (I expected Marg to win by UD).
maybe he's good at training old guys.
maybe he knows how to pace them the right way in training to get their old bodies in good shape.
all i know is shane and hop have been world class fighters for a long time.
if he had trained hopkins against calzaghe or shane against forrest and winky , he would have made no difference.
i'm sure he's a good trainer but the best? no.
if i was a pro fighter i'd still go to roach or mcgirt (who is very underrated now.)
One of the best IMO, he's one of the best at devising a gameplan for his fighters and his instructions in the corner is normally really good, really calm, clear and constructive, very, very good trainer.

fuck no.
hopkins and shane are pros' pros.
they were stars before him.
good observation, although they post was about making gameplans for undergods - not creating stars.
if richardson is the man behind the plan - then yes i'd say he is a great at doing so.
