The first two HBO cards of the year feature Welterweight stars on back to back weekends. Historically, HBO has done this to set up future fights. Berto came out the victor as expected. HBO strategically set up the Berto fight to take place one week before the Tony vs Shane showdown to create interest in the possibility of a Berto fight with the winner.
A rematch with Cotto is the most likely next fight for Tony provided he wins against Mosley, however, there is always the possibility of Cotto losing his fight with Jennings. This is a business and HBO is ensuring options in the event of a Cotto loss. If Shane wins against Tony, then there is an intriguing matchup that can be made between Shane and Berto, with both having recent hard fought victories over Louie Collazo.
With all that said, how would you all like to see Andre Berto vs Margarito or Mosley and who do you think would win?
Williams should stay at 154 or move up to 160 or 168
A 6'3 man with 82" reach fighting little welterweights is just ridiculous
Paul "The Coward" Williams should move up and pick on someone his own size!!
Thats ridiculous. I don't care if a fighter is 8 feet tall, if they can comfortably make the weight like Williams does, and not show signs of being drained or damaged mid fight, then that is proof that the fighter has the right to fight at that weight, it doesn't matter if they are 8 feet tall let alone 6"2. I always wonder why people complain so much about P Will fighting at welterweight. The last time he fought at the weight he weighed in at 145 and was unofficially at 156 on fight night, while "small" welterweights like Berto weigh in 147 on the button and unofficially come in around 160. Case in point its utter bullshit, a fighters weight class depends on their body type and NOT their height.
Why not fight Margarito. Doesn't Margarito want to avenge his loss.
This fight needs to happen. Hopefully they can agree on a purse split, which will be kinda hard to do especially if Tony whoops up on Shane this coming Saturday.

Agreed, Williams should make some noise at 160 and pursue a fight with Kelly Pavlik.
Berto clearly isn't ready for either Margarito or Mosely. He didn't beat Collazo in the opinion of most..Margarito would destroy him and Mosely in his late thirties would would beat him as well.
Yup, but he's the Champ. He aint a prospect anymore.

While everything you said above is accurate, Berto is the Champion and should not be treated as a prospect anymore. If they're gonna continue treating him that way, then he has no business holding that belt.
Hey I agree 100%. I don't like it when guys are babied either. I just said I don't want to see it happen. Marg just torches the man. But that's one of the biggest turnoffs about the sport these days.
In all actuallity, he'll probably fight Jesus Soto Karass who is ranked number 2 by the WBC just under Collazo. Funny thing is the WBC doesn't even have Shane or Margarito in thier top 15, WTF?
That's what you get when you have this alphabet soup BS. It's frustrating for newer fans like myself... sometimes I hear people talking about a Super-welterweight fight at 154, and I'm thinking "Isn't that Junior-middleweight??".
I really don't want to see this happen to Berto quite yet. It's painfully obvious that he wouldn't last against either guy. Marg pushes too hard and Berto's stamina isn't (or at least wasn't on Saturday night) anywhere near the level it needs to be for a fight like that. He'd need to get in and out quick and use more angles against Marg, but I don't see his feet as being quick enough yet. Marg would approach the fight like a harder hitting, harder working Collazo with a better chin. That would spell doom for Berto in the shape he was in 2 days ago.
A rematch with Collazo will give him everything he can handle for now.

They maybe would have put Berto in with Mosley after he losses to Margarito if Berto would have clearly beat Collazo and Shane would be old, past it and slow enough for the young lion. But as it is now Berto vs Collaoz II will prolly be the next fight for Berto.Kellerman already pitched it out at the post fight interviews and both said yes.

hbo expected berto to win and then after margarito beats mosley, match berto with mosley (marg will fight cotto win or lose), but now berto will rematch collazo.
You think they'll push for a Collazo rematch. I don't think his people want to do that. He almost lost that fight. Collazo does deserve it though.

I hear what ur saying but he's basically taken over for Floyd Mayweather in terms of being the WBC Champion. As the WBC Champion would we expect to see Mayweather fighting Luis Collazo or Quintana? Hell no. That's part of what's wrong with the sport today.
Don't put Berto in Mayweather's shoes, he's his own fighter and he needs time. The WBC may be the 'biggest' of all the sanctioning bodies' belts but the belt doesn't make the fighter.
There's absolutely no way Berto will face either Shane or Tony, or Clottey for that matter this year.
Berto's 2009.
June/July- Mandatory, maybe Soto-Karass
Fall- Collazo Rematch.
He needs to beat Collazo convincingly before he steps up. And I think he will in the rematch. 2010 will be the year Berto steps up with the big dogs.
I don't think Berto could take either right now. Winner of this fight should face Clottey later on if Pwill don't come back to 147.
Winner of the fight would make more money fighting Berto since HBO has been investing so much on the young Champion. Clottey can face his mandatory which would be Zab again, lol or Isaac Hlatshwayo.
I know he needs to defend it but I doubt he'll defend it against anybody too dangerous, DiBella won't risk him.

He might not be ready, but guess what, he's a title holder. That's the same belt Mayweather vacated. Berto needs to defend that thing. It's time to step it up, whether he's ready or not.

Berto is pretty much a contender with a belt, if that makes sense, I would call him a titlist but that's just because he has a title, he's not ready yet.
