He sustained a bloody noise from round 2. Round 11 he was bleeding from the nose and mouth very badly and was in very bad condition to continue. Why should he continue to take unnecessary punishment when clearly Margarito was the better man that night?
How can you call him a coward when he was among the very few that even stepped in he ring with Margarito? Not quitting would be just plain stupid, why should he risk his health and career just so the fans can get an extra few minutes of bloody action? There was no need, the fight was action packd from round 1 as Lampley said: "a modern day boxing classic".
He should have gathered himself mentally and figured a way to last the rest of the fight without taking a beating. Plain and simple.
It's so easy to say this at home sitting behind a keyboard. Have you EVER stepped into a ring and took shots from anyone with or without gear? Your opinion is not one to be respected by anyone with an IQ above 20.
he should have kept moving or clinching. It doesn't automatically mean that a fighter not giving up would just stand there and take a beating. I don't know how you made that direct connection. He should have gathered himself mentally and figured a way to last the rest of the fight without taking a beating. Plain and simple.
I don't have a doubt in my mind that he was physically exhausted, and had absolutely nothing left. Essentially, he would have been unable to effectively defend himself, and thats why I said he would be standing there taking a brutal beating.
Besides, what would moving and clinching have done ? Not much, maybe slightly lessen the damage, but in no means was it beneficial for him in the fight, or as a fighter with a future.
Risking possible neurological damage to uphold this unbeatable warrior fascade is not worth it, at all.
I hear u and I also respect ur opinion, what im saying is AM punches from every angle, has a high workrate and is a big pressure fighter!!u cant rest against the ropes and fighting in spurts is not going to happen!!Punching from angles will trump the Mayweather defence and the workrate will be to much to overcome!!
Would be fun to watch. Maybe one day we'll get to find out. I won't be holding my breath though.

I agree , people are just plain stupid when it comes to profesional desicions , somebody takes a knee in boxing its considered fear when its truly a smart move, another thing people talk crap about the wink in Puerto Rico it doesnt necesarily mean what it means in other places here when you wink an eye it could mean its OK. A trainer who lets you take a beat down risking your career , mental stability and overall your health is not in your best intrest!:pat:
I respectfully disagree with the bold. Margarito would have a world of trouble connecting on Mayweather IMO. He's just too damn slow. I think Mayweather beats Margarito in what most people would call a very boring fight.

Cotto fought a fighter who is underratted in the skills department,Margarito punches from every angle, thats a big deal!!Cotto is still a classy fighter, easily still first class, his skills improve every fight,a loss against the bigger Margarito doesnt deminish his credibility,Mayweather would fall to Margarito as well!!

What does his fight have do with 'lesser fighters going through worse' ?
Do you honestly think that these are the types of things fighters should be thinking of when taking a savage beatdown ?
Whether or not internet forum posters will 'respect' his decision ?
Whether or not 'lesser fighters' have been through a 'lot worse' ?
It makes absolutely no sense for a beaten fighter to continue on and risk possible permanent damage, for pride.
Its easy for any of us to sit behind a computer screen and scream foul when a fighter is smart enough to know when he's beaten, and accept it.
Boxing is not a long career by any means, and the possible outcome of a brutal beating like this could take a lifelong toll.
It seems as if many of you would have 'respected' to see him just stand there and get beat to a pulp.
But what would that have proved ?
Boxing as a career, is one that it definitely pays more to be smart than brave.

There were only 2 rounds left. Lesser fighters have gone through a lot worse and haven't quit. Cotto shouldn't have quit. I still like him as a boxer but I don't respect that "quiting" aspect of his character until he redeems himself and shows me that he is a true warrior.

i'm not calling him a quitter at all. he took more in the first round than i would take. to get up like he did says alot about him but he clearly knew he was a beaten fighter at that point.
If anyone of you claiming Cotto quit and is a coward or something of that nature thinks you could take half the ass whipping he took you're a lunatic with hateristic tendencies. So what if he didn't "go out on his shield". Fighters fight to see the light of another day, the point of the sport isn't to die with honor in the ring. Stop watching movies kids. They give you an unrealistic view of how shit is supposed to be.
cotto clearly shook his head no to his corner like he didnt want no more but i dont blame him he was tired and hurt and could have been seriously hurt.he fought the wrong fight against marg.
fortunatly for him he wont have to fight him again because mosley will beat marg and setup a rematch with cotto.
mosley wont beat marga, and even if he would marga/cotto 2 will happen.
U want to make a bet? 4k??
