Calzaghe says that he wanted the mega fights against the likes of Hopkins and Jones much earlier in his career but was held back.
"I never thought I got the respect I deserved. I wasn't getting the opportunity for the big fights, that wasn't my problem, that was managers and promoters who control boxing," said Calzaghe.
"Since '97 (after beating Chris Eubank for the WBO title) I was looking for a unification fight. I fought six former world champions because it cost less to pay them. I always had this frustration in me, I was wanting to prove myself so when the Lacy fight came along I was 34-35 and it rejuvenated me.
"What I gained from that I thought I lost with the Peter Manfredo fight. That was a joke fight. After that I decided I would be taking control and the only fight I wanted was Kessler, I didn't want no manager or politics getting in the way.
"I wanted to fight against the best ? after 11 years now I've achieved all I wanted to achieve and I have to decide do I want to keep doing it, I'll be 37. My contract came to and end (with Warren) and I went my own way."
Warren refutes any suggestion that he wasn't keen on placing Calzaghe in with the best of his contemporaries at the end of the 1990s and particularly the early part of this century.
"At the time the other champions were in Germany, Markus Beyer and Sven Otkke and they weren't coming out of there as their records show and Jones was a light-heavyweight. I made big offers to both the Germans and they wouldn't do a deal," said Warren.
"And Joe knows all about Hopkins. We had a deal agreed and then he came back asked for the double the money.
"Joe grossed £17m with me so I don't think that's too bad. Now he says the game is dying and yet he's taken out a promoter's licence, what's the point in that?"
In regard to multi-weight champion Jones, Calzaghe admits that he would "have loved to have fought him five years ago" as the win would have meant so much more even though his performance could not be faulted.
"Jones always had handspeed but he would never throw the amount of punches that I threw. It would have been a harder fight but I would have fancied my chances," he added.
Now he must make the biggest decision of his life and after so many fine triumphs he has nothing more to prove.
so if the promoters and mangers were holding him back...why did he had the mind to leave them at the time??
with his record someone in america would take him and get him some publiticy.
It's quite funny actually, when Calzaghe fired Warren, Warren naturally exposed Calzaghe.
Saying he always got worried before bouts, and wanted to pull out etc. etc.
Says it all for me.
Not to mention how suddenly Calzaghe had overcome his "Fear of flying" when Hopkins and RJJ were going to retire.
Pathetic

You got to be ****in kiddin me to say stupid shit like that.
Hopkins or Toney ring a bell?
I should make that verbal idiocracy my new signature quote.
just stop communicating with him, it's the right thing to do for him
IMO Prime Roy Would give Joe an ass whoppin... for yall saying the fight would be close......yall mustve forgot what a Prime Roy was
a shot Roy held his own for half the fight against Joe...
Calzaghe hid til everybody got old, so screw him. He knew he had no shot against prime Roy or Hopkins.
I guess by your logic, Lennox Lewis hid until Tyson and Holyfield got old, right?
A younger Calzaghe would have knocked out the Roy you saw recently. Roy went 12 because Calzaghe's hands are smashed up. That is the only reason he went the distance. Besides, in my opinion it should have been a stoppage somewhere around round 9. The Lacy fight should have also been stopped, it's pretty disgraceful that Lacy's corner didn't pull him out.
You are seeing it as how Calzaghe is NOW and how Roy was THEN. You gotta realize how much Calzaghe has lost in terms of power since he became plagued by injuries. The punch that cut Jones also broke his hand. They are brittle as **** dude.
its not possible to know how good calz was back then.
we know that RJJ was a beast back then.
rewind the clock 5+ years and RJJ whups calz's ass.
I'd say a 1997 Calzaghe gives him a hell of a fight, the one who fought Eubank.

c'mon now, a shot rjj went 12 rounds w/ calz and put calz on his ass.... A SHOT RJJ did that, imagine what a prime RJJ would do.

I'm pretty much 50/50 on the outcome of such a fantasy matchup. Anyone who thinks it's an easy fight for either fighter isn't thinking right.

I don't mind at all. It proves that Jones didn't duck Joe, like allot of the huggers elude to. I was simply saying that Joe knew the deal back when Jones was at his peak and knew the fight was almost not winnable, therefore he didn't take it. The people who somehow think Jones ducked Calzaghe are way off base and I just had nothing to prove otherwise. Now I do.
We both know Calzaghe doesn't beat Jones in his prime.
I wouldn't say Jones ducked Calzaghe, but I wouldn't say he was jumping at the chance to fight him either. Neither fighter ducked the other. What Calzaghe said was he'd want a huge check for fighting Jones. Who can blame him? It is a risky fight because Roy was excellent, but it works both ways. After all, Roy has said the same thing, according to Warren; that they had fights with Roy fall through because he always priced himself out. Roy did the same thing with Michalczewski. Some would say he ducked Michalczewski. Hopkins priced himself out of the Calzaghe fight.
I don't like all the talk of X-fighter ducking Y-fighter. It's never black & white, there are multiple factors to consider; Jones could fight easier fights in America for good money. Jones was in a different weight class, having moved up to light heavyweight in 1996 -- a whole year before Calzaghe became super middleweight champion by beating Eubank in 1997. Hopkins was a middleweight. He skipped super middleweight completely in 2006 and moved up two divisions.
So anyway... that's where you and I differ. Any talk of Jones beating Calzaghe prime for prime is merely speculation. I don't believe Roy would do as well against younger Calzaghe as some people believe. Joe would have always been a hard fight for Roy; he hit hard, fought hard for 3 minutes of every round, threw just as many punches as he does now, and was almost impossible to knock down. When he did get knocked down -- first time was in 2003 -- he got off the floor and won the fight in the same round by TKO. Calzaghe's heart and determination is unreal, and this is often what wins him fights: he will not acknowledge the possibility of losing.

What does it prove, if you don't mind me asking? This article is old news, I thought everyone had seen it.
It kind of proves Joe didn't fancy a fight with prime Roy, i for one can't blame him.
I think Joe lack of desire to promote himself to the fans held him back too but he would not be undefeated if he fought Jones and Hopkins in their prime.
Joe never wanted to fight Jones in his prime and Calzaghe's own words prove it!

Maybe he was joking when he said this?
"I could probably give Jones a tough fight, probably the best fight he's ever had," said Calzaghe. "But I know my capabilities and unless I got paid the crown jewels I wouldn't want to risk it."
In other words Calz priced himself out of big fights.
Calz had to have realized that Hopkins and Jones didn't need Calz... he needed Hopkins and Jones to legitimize career.
Barely getting past a 43 year old senior citizen and failing to KO a shot RJJ does not legitmize Calz's career.
Man, you have no idea how long i've been waiting to find that article again. I've been round and round with allot of brittish fellows on here explaining that but they never would consider believing their hero said those things. I could never convince them, but with this link, I now have the proof i've been refering to but could not find again. Thanks a million.

I think people just want to see good fights. I mean Hopkins/Calzaghe is competitive... but really ugly. Roy looked HORRIBLE in that fight... much like he did against trinidad. I think Calzaghe is an exceptional fighter... and he has nothing to prove... I just want to see a good fight. Is there anything wrong with that?
Nothing wrong with that!

Dying. Not dead. Killing itself with too many sanctioning bodies, and some other stuff.

All Jones and Hopkins fans are bitter toward Joe.
Just as Pavlik and Dawsons, remember the Pavlik love pre Hopkins? WELL shows how fickle they are as 95% of posters who picked Pavlik are now Dawson fans!
When Dawson loses they will move to Allen Green and swear Joe is ducking him and that Dawson is really 36yo but got away with 26yo because of his childish lisp.
Yes it will happen.
