Roy Jones and Floyd Mayweather both Stand Out as this era Greatest Fighters...
But The One thing I never understood is How people hold these two fighters to different standards.
Nobody ever held it against Roy that he didnt fight the best Heavyweights although he call himself the best Heavyweight in the world when he was the "Pound for Pound" best in the world. In addition he said would even beat Lenox Lewis,Wlad Klitschko, and Mike Tyson.??????
And yet people still think he is an all time great even though he didnt clean out the heavyweight division and fight the best heavyweights although he called himself the "best heavyweight in the world" and had the belt????
But when it comes to Mayweather, all you hear is if he doesnt fight the best welterweights in the world he is not a all time great...because he called himself the best "Welterweight" in the world when he was P4P best in the world.
Not looking at the fact Roy did the same thing..
The welterweight division was Mayweathers 4th division
The Heavyweight Division was Roy's 3rd/4th Division
(3rd division he held a belt in)
So my question is why do some of you guys hold Mayweather to a different standard that you are not holding to Roy...
Roy went back down to the Light Heavyweight division to fight tarver, johnson, and calzaghe and never returned to the heavyweight Division to prove he was the best although he said he was the best and had a belt.
QUESTION:
How would you guys feel and would you be mad if Floyd came back and went back down to the Jr. Welter weight divsion OR Lightweight and fought JMM, Hatton, and Pacquaio?
And not proved he is the best welterweight in the world,
although he had the lineal title. which technically proved he was the best in the division.
Even before his fights with Ruiz, annalist said that Jones would be crushed against the bigger heavyweights such as Lewis, Klitschko ect, so no one really expected him to stay at heavyweight which would have been a horrible move. Floyd is actually the same size as Margarito and Cotto, yet he doesn't take chances against them. Jones beat great fighters such as Hopkins, Toney ect and every other elite champion that the public were screaming for him to fight (other than European title holders that were not ready to leave their homeland) and heavyweight. Other than that, Roy fought and beat everyone.

And welter/light welter would be Pacquiao's what? 5th division? and you see this as a lot fairer than fighting Cotto or Margarito? Nice. I guess that would also be your equivalent of Roy Jones Jr. coming back and fighting #2 P4P Calzaghe, right? :D
Roy was disrespected in his day just like Floyd is now. The threadstarter is playing right into the haters' hands by trying to set Roy and Floyd off against each other. In reality they should stand shoulder to shoulder because they're both in exactly the same boat: ATGs who get resented because of how great they are.
Yeah, because the jump from MW to HW (40+ lbs) is the exact same as the jump from SFW to WW (17 lbs.) :poke: And expecting Roy to fight a 6'5", 250lb top 10 ATG HW while weighing less than 200 was the exact same as expecting Mayweather to fight the shorter Miguel Cotto. :?!: Forgetting for a minute that Roy was already 34 when he fought Ruiz, not the 30 that Floyd was when he decided to call it quits rather than face his toughest challengers.
In the end, that is what separates Floyd from guys like Leonard or Duran, who never shied away from fighting the best, especially when in their primes.

bump
Understood and I would have rather have Floyd NOT to...considering there wasn't anyone else good enough to face.
forbes and spadafora would have been good wins.
casa and freitas would have been excellent wins.
if he had gotten the kostya fight instead of hatton that would've been a great win.
imagine......
corrales. castillo. kostya. hatton. gatti. spadafora. genaro. casamayor. freitas. judah. delahoya.
no one would dare question his resume.
He already did what he had to do at 130 and at 135 he faught JLC the best LW...I'll agree that he should have faught Casamayor
i'm not saying he wasn't the best at 130 and 135.
i'm a floydhater but i give him his props for what he did at 130 and 135.
he beat the best opponent at 130 at the time in corrales and did the same thing at 135 with castillo.
to me those are his biggest wins.
but horus said he cleaned the division out. he did not.
to clean out a division is to beat a majority of the top 10 and unify the belts.
he did not do that. cleaning out the division is what calzaghe did at 168 with kessler and lacy. cleaning out the division is what hopkins did with tito and holmes.
to say floyd cleaned out 130 and 135 is technically incorrect. yes he beat the top fighters in that division but he did not clean it out.
sasakul was the best flyweight at the time pacquiao beat him. ledwaba was considered the best super bantam champ at the time pacquiao beat him.
you don't see me saying pacquiao cleaned out 112 and 122. he didn't. all he did was beat the best guy in the division and win a belt. was pacquiao the best at those weight classes at the time. yes you can say that but he did not clean out the division.
I'm Not reading thru 12 pages of BS..
Everyday Horus makes a thread.. What is the thread about??
Mayweather
The guy is either paid, or is letting floyd ram him in the ass..
My .02
like i said......floyd was the best at 130 and 135 but he DID NOT CLEAN IT OUT.
to clean out a division means beating all the top fighters and unifying the division.
floyd never cleaned out any division. the closest he came to getting another belt was when he beat diego who was the former ibf champ.
floyd did not clean out 130 or 135.
he was the best at 130 and 135 but he did not clean it out.
Mayweather is Considered the Greatest Ever at 130 by almost everybody.
Boxrec.com Has also RATED Mayweather the TOP 130 Pounder Ever Too:
http://www.boxrec.com/ratings.php?country=&sex=m&division=Super+Featherweight&status=E&SUBMIT=Go
HERE IS WHY ALMOST EVERYBODY CONSIDERS MAYWEATHER THE GREATEST FIGHTER EVER AT 130:
Mayweather clean out 130.
130: Super Featherweight
The Top Four Recognized Fighters Were:
Genaro Hernandez
Angel Manfredy
Roberto Garcia
Diego Corrales
At Mayweather First Division at 130,He Dominated the Division.
He was Knocking out all top Contenders.
To the Point that after only 2 years turning PRO He was ranked 8th On the P4P List and Number 1 in his Division
http://www.boxrec.com/media/index.php/The_Ring_Magazine%27s_Annual_Ratings:_1998
He Fought Genaro Hernandez who was 38-1-1 2 time World Champion. And The Reigning WBC world Champion. And The Ring Magazine Recognize World Champion of The Division.Who only Lost came from Oscar De La Hoya in which Oscar broke his in several places. .Which Happen 3 years Earlier
In that Fight Floyd Dominated the Recognize Champion at 130. and Officially Became
The WBC world Champion at 21 years old and 17 fights.
...
not no international or state or any other bullshit title, but The Official Recognize WBC world Champion at 21 years old. And Now Recognize as The Ring Magazine number # 1 fighter in the division at 21 years old
and #8 on P4P list out of all the fighters in the world.
His Next Fight right After that Fight,Mayweather beat the guy who was RANKED number #4 ( Angel Manfredy) , And In that fight Mayweather Knocks Him Out in the 2nd.Round.
Now Mayweather had now beaten 2 out of the top 4 fighters in the 130 division. all before the age Of 22.And the 3rd of those 4 fighters was
(Roberto Garcia who was 31-0 with 23 Knock Outs.)
And Floyd was about to fight Roberto Garcia, but Roberto Garcia decided to fight Knock Out Artist and Another P4P Phenomenal fighter in Diego Corrales.. Who out of 33 fights to that Point. only 5 fighters didnt get Knock Out.
Roberto Garcia was knock out in the 7th Round by Corrales. Now Instead of Floyd Fighting Roberto Garica, he nows finds himself in the position
of fighting the #5 Pound 4 Pound fighter in the sport, and then #1 fighter at 130...Diego Corrales.
and In that Fight Floyd was a 2 to 1 Underdog, to not only lose to Corrales. But to get Knock out.
Floyd fights Corrales, The #5 P4P fighter in the sport and #1 fighter in the division, and in the fight compellingly outclassed
and Knocks out Diego Corrales in a 10 round 1 sided fight.
After that Floyd Completely Clean out the 130 Division with 8 title defenses, with 6 of those fights ending in Knock out.
Floyd at 130 now can not get a big name fighter to fight him from Featherweight to Lightweight.
NOBODY..and when big name fighters did get approach about fighting Mayweather, they either demand a 55-45 split, or didnt return the call. So Floyd started calling out all the big names Shane Mosely, Oscar De La Hoya, everybody.
But Nobody wanted to fight. So instead of staying at 130 where no other big names will fight him at. He moves Up.
And his first fight was against the number # 1 guy at 135 JLC.
u see what im sayin tho dom... i know 147 wasnt floyds BEST weight, but he undoubtedly proved eh could fight there and still beat just about everybody...
just like roy with 168 and 175
so its realistic to say floyd avoided threats at 147... his weight class... even though it may not have been his BEST in his entire career... 147 was undoubtedly his weight class at the time he retired
Floyd Mayweather was one of the best fighters in the world, but he doesn't technically belong to a weight class because he moves up and down in weight to fight. He could fight at Lightweight (135 lb), Junior WelterWeight (140 lb), Welterweight (147 lb) or Junior Middleweight (154).
Thats why he was Pound 4 Pound.
To ask him to clean out his 4th division when he been in 5 division Is ok, but it should not be Mandate in order to be consider great.
People forget.
The man clean out 130 which he fought from 1996-2002
The Man beat the recognize champ at 135.
The Man beat the former and current recognize champ at 147 when he got there like it or not if it was judah or bladomir. That doesnt take away from what he did at the time.
Look at it like this After only 2 years turning Pro
Floyd Mayweather was ranked 8th On the P4P List and Number 1 in his Divison.... Only 2 years after turning Pro
(http://www.boxrec.com/media/index.ph..._Ratings:_1998)
Floyd Mayweather was ranked 2th on P4P List in Only 3 years of After turning Pro Number 1 in his Division
(http://www.boxrec.com/media/index.ph..._Ratings:_1999)
And We all know that he was recognized number #1 for almost 4 years ....
In a shorter period of time From a Ranking Stand Point Floyd Mayweather Has risen higher than anybody.
And that is because dude resume is Stacked...
Dude was a WBC world Champion at 21 years old and 17 fights.... not no international or state or any other bullshit title, but WBC world Champion at 21 years old

So i do not think it is required for Floyd to clean out the Welter Weight division in order to be consider great. Just Like Roy didnt have to clean out the Hw Division.
roy WANTED to fight holyfield, and the fight didnt get made... and i dont know why it didnt, but im willing to bet it had to do with a money split... and yes i think roy beats both of them at HW...
the fights didnt get made... and he fought the best LHW at LHW...
I think were really getting off subject here, we seem to be comparing Roy fighting tarver versus Flody fighting hatton...
I think another big situation your missing as to why Floyd doesnt get his respect.. and im a Floyd fan... but his recent Fight picks lately have been less than impressive...
I think the real difference was... roy came down and fought the #1 guy that HE SHOULD of fought... there was nobody else.. it was Tarver, there wasnt even any other real options in 2003... unless of course he decided to fight Lennox... which, could of very well been suicide... who could blame him?
But Floyd decided to not fight Cotto, or Margarito, two of the biggest threats at his weight class... bigger threats than hatton... and didnt move down to hattons weight class to fight him, but hatton moved up, which hes proved hes to small for ww... he just cant handle those guys up there like floyd can.
and when Floyd retired there were even more threats at welterweight... Paul Williams was on a sharp rise, Andre Berto is coming around the corner... Mosley is still there... and Floyd decided to fight a guy naturally smaller than him... and retire.. and not face all the serious threats in his division.
ruiz was 226... roy was 193... and i believe 198 the day of
I think Cotto was the only real guy at the time that could equal Floyd's Tarver. NOW Margarito's name holds a bit more weight with more people due to the win over Cotto. Although he ran through Cintron he didn't look great against Clottey. When Floyd beat Oscar the only fight that would have pleased everyone would have been Cotto. Still there were a lot of people that picked Hatton to win down played Hattons chances afterward.
he didnt weigh 226.... he weighed 193 at the weigh in.. and 198 the day of
Thats what I thought I just rewatched the fight like 3 days ago. I was pretty sure I wasnt that high. That proves Roys weight isnt HW he only made it to CW limits.
It is the same as if Roy would have fought Tarver at HW...
Why Not Corrie Sanders, Chris Byrd, Lenox Lewis, and Holyfield.
Why didnt Fight the best Heavyweights when he had the belt at Hw. and could have??? He came in vs John ruiz at 226 pounds all muscle...!!
I have no doubt he could have been a force in the HW division.
look at what Chris byrd and Holyfield did.
why didnt Roy do it...?
Roy weighed 226? I thought he was like 198
