Is it true that in Gleason's you can easily pick out other members to fight full contact with you in the rings they got there? What is the heaviest bag they have there?
I am 233 pounds 22 years old and 5"9 from Jersey City and am looking for SERIOUS sparring partners who's a tough son of a bitch who will stop at nothing. I don't care if it's the world heavyweight champion himself, some 350 pound Valuev clone or whatever....I'll fight him.
I havent started competing in amateurs since since I've only started boxing a month ago...but definitely need sparring partners to beat the shit out of...
So who goes to Gleason's?
I havent gone to this gym yet since im all the way from Jersey City...but plan to join very soon.....
yeah man, i wish you the best of luck, but at 5'9 you should try and get down to atleast cruiserweight..unless you have the head movement of a prime mike tyson..im 5'10 with an arm length of 29 inches from the armpit to the end of the fist..and i can make 122 still..but who knows im only 17 and about to leave for USMC bootcamp so i may put on some weight..but yeahh if you want to stay at heavy, work on that head movement and getting on the inside
Now I see. Thanks for clearing that up. I eat 100% clean and do religious cardio everyday to make things clear. I am around 11% bodyfat (Last time I checked was with in my old gym a few months ago).
I used to religiously lift weights and bodybuild for 5 years, in which I would do tons of squats and deadlifts as well as benchpresses, which is probably what built my super heavyweight foundation. I now just lift weights once a week since conditioning for boxing is a greater priority I have and must expend all necessary energy towards stamina and endurance which is pretty damn important!
bodybuilding is not boxing... bodybuilding will leave u stiff not able to punch .. and when u punch the opponent will be out of range or slipping and weaving and countering before u can even bring your hand back... ive sparred some hard punchers that fight at 141 that have wicked right hands .. it has to do with technique mre than muscle.. im very muscular for my wieght also.. and guys with lots of movement and speed give me trouble
Many here assume that you are built like someone who eat 3 meals a day @ Burger King's. Its a different story if you are all muscle though, like Mike Tyson, short but well built in his prime that is.

Why are you guys saying that I will get my ass whooped at 233 pounds at 5"9?

I don't think that it means you'll get your ass whooped but you are always more effective against smaller competition. I think Margarito is a prime example of this.
well to that i salute you brotha.... hopefully theres some people on here you can contact but i can almost guarantee Gleasons has some heavyweights up there that wouldnt mind working with you
Thanks man. I'm looking forward to making the transition to Gleason's, since I've heard that it's one of the last few old school boxing gyms left in the country and is full of very competitive bangers.

I work near exchange place in Jersey City and travel all the way back to queens to get home. It's not such a rough commute. But at 5'9 wouldn't you be better dropping down to atleast cruiser weight?

I am not trying to brag or to be a keyboard warrior, which is what it may sound like. I am trying to locate sparring partners who is similar to my 233 pound weight class on this board to meet up with me in Gleason's, or the gym I go to now, the World Boxing and Fitness Center in Jersey City. I know that if I want to box I must fight other pros to gain fighting experience before I can even THINK about fighting in comps. Don't get me wrong...I am prepared mentally and physically to take a severe beating from other pros who are MUCH more experienced than me. Shit...I got nothing to lose.
But, being born deaf, I have been beaten down constantly all of my life mentally, and can handle pain, physical and mental since I am adapted to it.
I am probably going to join Gleason's as soon as my membership runs out and make the hour and a half trip to Gleason's every other day to hit the heavy bag and spar with the best pros I can try to locate.
So if anybody with my weight class and aggression can spar me...let's do this...
no doubt... when u start sparring they'll put u in with guys from all different weight categories.. first you'll defintly need to lose some weight and at least get down to 178 or 165 maybe even lower.. i know a guy who came in the gym 185 and now fights at 125 .. 5'9 and 233 is very overwieght.. the attitude u have is like alot of guys that start out.. and we all get humbled quick lol believe me... boxing is an experience good luck

lol.. more than likely you'll be the one getting your ass kicked for the first few months.. especially at 5'9 and a super heavy /... im 5'7 and fight at 152 and im still pretty short for my wieght
Tor Hamer and that other Polish kid would give u an ass whoopin
kid sounds like hes got heart tho.... seriously you'll probably get beat up for the 1st few months but if you stick with it you'll start getting the hang of it....... also you may want to consider moving down in weight unless your like a Tyson or Tua type

I agree , at that weight and height you will get your ass beat, especially at a gym like gleasons. at 5'9 you should be a welterweight at least, not super heavy.
