Honestly, despite many hating on Miguel Angel Cotto, I still think he is one of the best welterweights. He's never ducked any opponent that came his way. He beat Mallinaggi, Quintana, Judah, Mosley (although I had Mosley winning but it was very close), it's just he couldn't get the job done with Margarito despite landing some very hard blows. He has fought some of the top guys and it would be astounding for anyone to question his resume. He called Mayweather out but Mayweather obviously didn't want much to do with him at the time. He is a great pressure fighter, a great power puncher and a great boxer overall. I think lately, much more respect should be shown to him than what he has been given. He lost to a great and in-shape fighter in Margarito. It wasn't Cotto who was inneffective but rather Margarito who was effective and he had an iron chin. Without the chin, many question whether he or anyone else could've taken those punches. The only one close to it was Mosley who had such great heart. Show some respect to Cotto. He's still a top welterweight folks...
"Great" is a term we use way to easily. Great is the best of the best all time. You can't just throw that word around because it loses it's real meaning.
Cotto could be agreat at the end of his career but he would have to do a lot of things. He would have to beat Margarito and possibly beat Mayweather if Mayweather comes back which I think he will.
Great though is a subjective matter and is based on ones perspective. I might have exaggerated a bit but it was meant to stress my point. Mayweather didn't want to fight him the first time so I wouldn't see why not fighting him would deter him of being "great". I would understand if he ducked Mayweather but it's a different story since he was being avoided. It's just I can't believe how fans and critics abandon a fighter after a loss. Especially when Cotto was so explosive in his matches and he lost to a really good fighter. The thread was meant to point out just how ridiculous fans can be and how quickly they forget a top welterweight after one match...
he's a top welterweight, but not THE top welterwight. He will never clean out a division. He will never be top dog. end of thread
Floyd knows a thing or two about being the top Welterweight, right?

HE never called out Floyd Mayweather.. He never made an effort to fight that man.. His team rejected the notion of fighting Mayweather on a few occasions.. Cotto is a good fighter, but he is not great.. he has alot to prove in order to do that.
Oh C'mon. Are you serious? You don't remember when Mayweather said that Cotto would not draw many fans and is not a money making fight and that was his "reason" for not fighting him? Cotto was hungry why would he not want to fight Mayweather?

Skills wise,Cotto is probably the best 147-pounder,but right now at 147 you got 2 freaks of nature looming in Paul Williams and Margarito, whos physicality trumps any other top welterweights. Not to mention Clottey, who is the most underated fighter since Winky Wright!
one thing I don't like about boxing is that fighters are written off after losing for the first time. Cotto is still young and still have great fights left in him.

So who said he has to? There have been many great fighters who never cleaned out their division but were coined "great". If your definition of great is everyone who cleaned out their division than your list is very few my friend. If you're a Mayweather fan, I understand...
