Hey. Don't take this thread the wrong way. I respect Bruce Lee, I just don't understand how people think he was such a badass, if the dude never had any televised fights...Feel free to prove me wrong.

Haha the guy is blown way out of proportion.
It's kinda like me saying their was a kid in Argentina who was a more skilled footballer than Maradona but he only ever played in the streets, never turning pro but was definetly superior. But in reality, he would never of been up against opposition anything like what Maradona was facing at the world cup and such and could probably not perform at that level.

Precisely that reason, because his fights are not on video it's allowed for rampant speculation. If they were on video i'm pretty sure it'd show some of his weaknesses.
Youtube didn't exsist in the 60's.
Just sayin.
Exactly. It was a lot harder to film something back then. He died years before even video cameras were around.
Name them.
Also Bruce would not do well in MMA at all since he was not a fighter.
That said he was very open minded. He could have been a great coach for MMA adapting his conditioning techniques and mma techniques he picked up for his fighters. Guy was a sponge.
Stfu about who he fought.. You never knew the guy and never saw him fight either so quit your talk about all these other guys being able to beat Bruce Lee.... He is dead give the guy some damn respect and love him for what he was. He was a physical freak of nature and i highly doubt there are many guys in the UFC today that would be able to keep up with his work ethic albeit perhaps very few. He was not some pansy movie star only. He was a master of his art. Would be so great to have a timemachine so i could take your dumbass back to Bruce in his prime and see you talk the same shit. Bet you would last about 2 seconds... Eh not even that 1. If Bruce Lee had been in his prime today i think he would be insanely killer in the UFC if he had time to practice with more grappling and ground skills perhaps in the lightweight or welterweight division. He is a LEGEND
Dude, wtf are you talking about. The one inch punch revolutionized fighting...
Yes, but, if I may play Devil's advocate for a moment, nothing Bruce learned was his own invention. There have been martial artists; masters, no less, tucked away in the asian countrysides and in monastaries who do NOTHING in life but perfect their arts. For someone to think that this kid in the 70s was teh first one to think of these things is ludicrous. Of course he was charismatic, and of course we all loved him. He was a great man. But he was not original. You can't be born five millenia after the birth of martial arts and think of something no one else has.
Now, if the guy never had a single fight, imagine how hurt he would be if he got hit by a guy like Edwin Valero...
Valero is so slow and uncoordinated, I wonder if he would even land a punch.
I heard the guy was in cameo roles from age three, that hardly sounds like 'growing up tough on the streets'
Yes that's true but when he moved back to were his parents are from, he got into a lot of fights. He was growing up there I believe for some time.
Here's my consensus.
Lee might have had a great physique. I think Edison Miranda has a better physique. Physique means nothing, unless you're a fatass.
I don't care how good of shape he was in, if he never had a single fight on PHOTOGRAPH, much less VIDEO, how could anyone consider him the grandfather of MMA, much less some kind of badass. The guy is an Asian version of Jean Claude Van Damme that deserves respect only for bringing his teachings to the united states. The one inch punch is bullshit. If a guy tried to do that in any kind of regular fight he would eat a jab.
Now, if the guy never had a single fight, imagine how hurt he would be if he got hit by a guy like Edwin Valero...
People talk of him being some kind of 'full contact champion' but where are the photographs. Where is the proof. I want to see him in the ring with someone...
Hey, Bringer...Remember this part when Nolte's daughter was like, "Dad, what are you scared of? You boxed..." ;P
I seem to think you know less about martial arts and fighting in general with each post you make. Jean Claude Van Damme was never a martial artist at any point in his life. He was a Russian Ballerina turned actor when he was unable to land a broadway gig upon immigrating to the US.
You also misunderstand the entire concept of the 1inch punch. The entire purpose of the 1 inch punch was to demonstrate Bruce Lee's unique ability to throw a punch in close range from the clinch and have the punch contain the same amount of force as a right cross in which all your weight is in the punch.
An ability that was seen as highly unlikely to impossible until Bruce Lee demonstrated it. Obviously the 1inch punch would never be thrown from jab range.
The man's speed is superhuman. Obviously toying with the poor guy using nothing but jabs and front kicks. More impressive than the schooling however is the fact that none of those strikes are even slightest bit telegraphed. It's like his arm was being shot out of a cannon. Even the best fighters in the world telegraph their shots some of the time.
You can't tell they are being telegraphed because the video is terrible.
He didn't land a single punch. That was not a fight, but a mere demonstration.

Its not all about the fights you have.. Do you honestly believe someone like bruce lee is uneffective in the ring.. have you seen how inhuman his body looks like in enter the dragon?
He was far ahead of his time with philosophy of fighting, plus all kinds of exercises he implemented into his extensive routine which is documented in several books..
Actually his whole life was about expressing the human body in the martial arts.. and he dedicated himself to that..
now this doesnt mean anything as far ass effectivenss.. and its hard to judge how effective he could be,
but he should definetly get respect.
Oh Lee has my respect, trust me. I just get a little annoyed at some of his fans sometimes, because they don't bring intelligence into the debate like Fizzle did. But I start shit with them sometimes just for laughs, admittedly.
Counselor, I wanna **** your daughter and wife on your houseboat!
Are you offering me something hot? Best quote in that movie.
No I am saying just because Bruce Lee never took part in any organized "match" does not disprove his ability. His accreditations speak for themselves.
Just as even though Washington in fact played a very minor role in the revolutionary war...It still remained that very few people at the time were any more qualified to be the 1st president of the country than George Washington.
Honestly, you make some good points. And you back it up with some good insight too. As to how Lee would do against a pro boxer, we'll never know, but it's always fun to debate. You're easily the smartest Lee fan I've conversed with on here, at least in making an intelligent case to debate upon. Most of them have insulted me pretty quickly in the past. Maybe I deserved it.
Kudos. :fing02:
How many professional fights did he have? Not counting those 5 back alley scraps.
The training thing sounds good, and he is the godfather of MMA. But what was his actual professional record? Not the guys he trained.

Because he was a revolutionary. It would be like saying why do americans think George Washington is such a hero when he only took part in 2 real battles during the revolutionary war. 1 of which they caught the enemy sleeping so no actual battle took place and the other he watched from the sidelines as French Navy ships battered Cornwallace's fort to end the war.
WTF
gimme some of that shit yer smoking kid :439:
How the **** is he the godfather of MMA, if the guy never had a fight. MMA is a fighting sport. That's like saying Jean Claude Van Damme is the godfather of Boxing.
Washington was, admittedly, elected for his bullshit reputation as a war hero. People over glorified him, when he literally did next to nothing. So by your standard ar eyou saying that's true of Bruce as well? Being glorified by those around him for literally having done nothing at all?
