Larry Merchant gets on my nerves...

Larry is usually fun to listen to. it'd suck if the other guys weren't there to balance him out, but for the most part I like his commentary.

He's really badass but can be a grumpy old man at times. When Pavlik knocked down Miranda and Miranda spit out his mouthpiece to recover, that had Larry all pissy. Sure it wasn't right what Miranda did but the referee has to follow the rules and put the mouthpiece back. It's not like Smoger was taking his time to do it either as he shoved it back in Miranda's mouth with alil water on it to clean it. Larry went loco about that move yet it was completely correct thing to do. He gets caught up in the moment I think and doesn't realize what he's saying. He's still insightful at times and I do enjoy the bullshit he talks after the fight ends that usually has a historic context.

He just does random things during fights that piss me off to no end. I just watched Williams-Margarito I, and Lampley was breaking down the styles, and Merchant interrupts him to say something stupid like... "Forget the styles, let's just enjoy the mayhem!" Yeah Larry, who the **** would want to be able to see who has the advantage for the later rounds... Moron. He also got pissy during Pacquiao-Morales III because the referee was sending Pacquiao back to the neutral corner after a knockdown because Pacquiao left early... "What is the referee doing?" Well Larry, he's actually just enforcing the rules that everyone was aware of pre-fight... Idiot. In Mayweather-Castillo I, when they were brawling and things were getting dirty... the referee said something like "Calm it down guys.", trying to get some order so he didn't have to take any more points... Larry gets belligerant and says "WHAT DO YOU MEAN CALM IT DOWN, IT'S A FIGHT!" Well yeah dude, but these fights have rules, he is just trying to get the fighters to follow them... calm the **** down. Anyone else get annoyed to no end by him? He really seems like he is better suited for street fights, because he just doesn't seem to get the rules of boxing or something. Is it me.. Or does this guy sound like a complete drama queen

He can be a grumpy prick sometimes but he is also the most honest there and doesnt pander to the HBO marketing. For instance last night, Steward was on PW's dick all night as was Lampley. Merchant was the only one with a more neutral view.

Larry is like any other commentator. He's got the good and bad. The good generally outweigh the bad, but sometimes you just want him to drink and shut the **** up.

has anyone noticed how dramatically slow he talks now? i stepped into the boxing door two years ago, and had only known recent fights and as i watched older fights and heard him... i didn't even know it was him. it's kind of hilarious.
