I just looked up jim lampley, larry merchant, max kellerman and harold lederman, and none of them have fought..
Quite disapointing really, as you prefer commentators to have fought, so they can give you more precise accurate professional commentating, and know whats it like to be inside the ring.
anybody else feel the same sentiments?
Being articulate counts a lot more. Lennox may know more than all three combined, but you wouldnt know listening to him.
Lennox for example probably wouldnt have been able to point out the fact that Manny was switching up his lead punches against Oscar like Lampley did. Even though he probably would have thought of it.
Max Kellerman was an amateur boxer im pretty sure... i read an article of him and his brother sam growing up in the bronx or queens or soemthing and they trained for about all their teen years
most people would howl with laughter if they saw Frog man getting into the ring to face them

The Best 1-2 team was Tim Ryan and Gil Clancy
Back in the 80's, CBS Sports, they had some amazing cards and great commentating with them two. They bounced off each other and knew what they were talking about.

One has nothing to do with the other.
I don't know. Big George was beyond horrible if you go back and watch old fights. He says the dumbest things. Roy doesn't have the voice for commentating and they could never really make that work even though he was usually dead on when he said how a fight was going to go. Lennox is okay, but I'd rather have Manny. Teddy Atlas repeats himself waaaay too much too.
I guess I'd just rather have the fighters fight and the commentators commentate. Neither can do what the other can half as well.
Which is why they have the third man for broadcasts, the one with live experience. Since when is broadcasters not having experience as fighters a rare occurrence - not even all trainers have experience as fighters (Angelo Dundee for example).
Ritchie gives great insightfull comments but that new dude they put him alongside him for the Jones v Calzaghe fight did not have a clue what he was watching
Yeah Richie talks alot of sense. He has moving into training, hes got some good young up and comers under his belt :)
this is a pretty stupid thread.. would you like to have all the boxers you watch have commentating experience? They don't need to KNOW how to box to commentate, they need to know ABOUT it though and you can do that as a spectator.. especially when you been in the boxing business for years. They always have Steward for the inside scoop anyways. And I do believe Kellerman came from a boxing background.. He may not have been a pro but he did train.

sometimes guys that have fought aren't the most articulate persons and are unable to see the historicity of a boxing match...
for instance merchant was needed for pac/dlh to compare pac to armstrong, since merchant was probably alive back then.... seriously, that bastard is old.
Any of you Americans ever seen the Setanta coverage we have here in the UK?
Its really decent for a young TV channel, they have Richie Woodhall as commentator and a number of ex / current fighters as pundits..
Oh and I ve got loads of fights on my computer with HBO coverage and i ve always enjoyed it :)

I always find english commentators way to biased,
ok i know your going to support your own country but
don't be so blatant about it.
James Allen with Lewis Hamilton and the sky sports
coverage of Hatton/Mayweather arre two good examples.
But, I think the sky sports coverage is better than setanta.

Genaro Hernandez is not a great commentator neither is George Forman
niether of those guys give much more insight than Lampley and Merchant
Al Bernstein is a very knowledgable commentator
Fighters are fighters and announcers are announcers. So what if they ain't fought before? I do enjoy hearin commentary from fighters who've been in there, but those guys are still good at what they do. They ain't really talkin outta their place til they start callin fighters cowards or sumthin, kinda like haters do on here all the time.
I have to say though, larry merchant and max kellerman sound as though they have fought, because they speak like ex fighters and come up with real good analysis.
merchant and kellerman are brillant.
kellerman post-fight with judah after the clottey fight was class.
judah claims the cut was by headbutt, they show judah the replay
which was clear it was a punch and cut back to the camera on
judah with his jaw open.
About merchant, From wikipedia:
Merchant is well known for his post fight interviews which feature his hard hitting, blunt questions and confrontational interview style. These have drawn both praise and ire in the past. Fans have claimed them to be candid and honest while detractors consider them to be purposely agitational and insensitive at times. An example of this occurred when Vernon Forrest won a controversial decision in 2006 over Ike Quartey. When Forrest thanked those close to him, Merchant quipped, "Would you also like to thank the judges?".
