I've been a boxing fan for quite awhile. Unlike a lot of people who SPEAK on fighters careers RETROACTIVELY(I.e. looking back at old tapes), I watched a lot of what's talked about while it actually happened. Which is why the "myth" of Oscar Dela Hoya taking on all comers is annoying to me. Oscar ONLY fought when he thought he had the advantage. Here's a run down:
Pernell-fought him when he was old
Chavez-fought him when he was old
Mosley-came up from 135 to fight Oscar.
Mayweather-fought him at 154, saying he couldn't make WW. But amazingly NOW he can make 147.
Ike Quartey-could of and should of fought him years earlier. Thought Ike was getting old
Tito-could of and should of fought him years earlier. And ONLY fought him after David Reid, the REAL person who laid the blueprint to beat Tito, fought him. Now Oscar gets all the credit for showing how to beat Tito. Find the David Reid fight and watch for yourself. He was DOMINATING Tito until Tito caught him. Needless to say, Reid was never the same fighter. Tito "ruined" him. Which leads to the next example
Vargas-could of andshould of fought him years earlier. Even vowed NEVER to fight him. Until Vargas fought Tito and Tito "ruined" him
Mayorga-fought him after Tito "ruined" him
Hopkins-fought him once he thought he was too old. Now we really see how WRONG he was. Bhop still going strong.
Pacman-moving up from 135(1 fight) to 147
Gatti-fought Oscar at 147 YEARS ago. As of late you saw 147 guys are were too big for him. And they STILL were when he fought Oscar. Oscar made him look small.
I'm NOT one of the people who think Margarito is "unbeatable"(just ask Paul Williams) but Oscar wasn't going to fight Margarito unless he had or THOUGHT he had all the advantages like he did in the examples I showed. He may fight him at 154 where Marg didn't look impressive. But NEVER at 147 unless Marg looks bad against Mosley. Oscar been doing this his ENTIRE career. You would have to be BLIND not to notice. And AGAIN......don't forget to peep the Tito vs David Reid fight. Peace
Why does Larry Merchant and boxing fans love the fact that Pacquiao comes into a ring smilling?
But everyone including Merchant felt disrespected that Delahoya could come into a ring smilling, which is why he stopped smilling while entering a ring cause he'd get hated on. .
Do you remember that son? Or do you need to google to confirm?
Well I would suggest you ask Larry Merchant that question. I don't speak for him.....Why woould I google that? I not concerned why another grown man stopped smiling. I could care leass whether its true or not.
This ISN'T a "smiling" forum its a boxing forum. <------Just a friendly reminder cause you seem to be losing focus. You're welcome in advance :) <---theres a smile for you.
Im not 26.
Taking the time to accuretly put in your date and age, "thats ****en gay."
The way you post i can tell you don't know shit about Delahoya and only what you read or watch on video. You're like the people who have to ask, "why is Delahoya so famous and loved" ****en kiddy shit.
The time you took to FIND and upload pics you could of put in your correct age(which I'm sure you did) in a fraction of the time. Just a thought *wink*
Ferocity, like I said.....you watched Oscar fight through "child eyes". And that's if you watched the fights at all. Which I'm sure you didn't. If so you certainly can retain a lot of information! Photographic memory or google? Hmmmmmm. Tsk tsk

Legends. Ok, i see Whitiker, Triniadad, Chavez just to name a few ain't legends?
Duh! did I mentioned that they're not? LOL!!! I commented on you bashing pacquiao then defending OScar for fighting whitaker and chavez.
You obviously is the hater.. Lokk at my sig... :D

oscar is not a pussy.he just wants to make money now.i just can't appreciate the way he goes about trying to sell everyone on these bullshit ass fights.it's corny and annoying.
Ferocity, I've been "exposed? Lol You're 25 years old so if you supposedly were following Oscar's career and NOT "going back and google-ing info", then you were watching with "child eyes". Just like I thought the Exocist was a scary movie when I was a CHILD. Now it just looks silly. Kinda like a 26 year old saying I've been "exposed", when its appears to be the other way around *wink*

Leija was tough and when Tszyu fought him he quit in the 6th because of a punctured eardrum. So, there's another fight where Leija had problems. You cannot talk about the lower weights and DLH without mentioning Tszyu. DLH very quickly left 140, without fighting Tszyu. This is a significant blip on Oscar's record. I know all the excuses, so don't bother.
But, let's put that aside. Oscar fought many big names. Many. Big names bring big money. That's uncontrovertable. You gotta like Oscar. No boxer is perfect. Oscar is a great fighter. Unquestionably HOF, and probably ATG. I say "probably" because I've yet to see proof of one thing: When did Oscar clean out a division and hold the belt (or belts) for a significant period of time? If we're talking about being among the best of all time, then this requirement has to be met. Period. Somebody show me something here.
If Tszyu was as good as you say he would have beaten Hatton thats a FACT.
Tszyu became a semi boring fighter after he lost to Phillips all he cared about was be defensive first after the Phillips fight.
To say Delahoy avoided him is ****en laughable. And im not even a fan of Mayweather but Mayweather is NOT to blame for not fighting Tszyu. Tszyu didn't want none of Mayweather either and he didn't even want none of Forest when there were talks of them fighting. Tszyu was a puss when talks of moving up.
To say you have to defend a division is funny, i guess fighting the best guy in the division isn't enough. I guess beating Whitker, TRinidad, Quartey at welterweight isn't enough. I guess beating the best at 130, isnt enough or 135, 140, 147, 154 at all these weight Delahoya beat the top guy. But he didn't clean out the weltweight divsion? or any division so you won't consider him an atg, who gives a ****, Delahoyas record speaks for itself few can touch his record.
Tszyu, lmao ddd!!!!!!!!!!!

Exactly what Ive been saying, all of his big fights he lost!
lmao!!!!!
Whats even funnier is everybody in boxing wanted Delahoya to fight these fighters who people are now saying are old. And ddd most of all boxing fans new this but these old greats were still Champions and the main guy at welterweight.
Haters always going to hate. They back Pacquiao whos made his name off old legends and they want to talk shit about Delahoya.
Reid laid the blue print for Delahoya to beat Triniad, LMAO!
LMAO @ defending Dela Hoya then bashing Pacquiao for fighting legends...
Delahoya was still young or could be considered green when he fought Paez, who was still a good fighter though out of his prime. How good, after he lost to Delahoya he got a World Title shot to G.Hernandez, then came back and later got close to another shot before Angel Manfredy got to him and Manfredy made his name by beating Paez many Years after Delahoya ko'd him.
And Jesse James Leija gave ever top fighter a tough challenger and Delahoya ko'd him in 1 round - do i have to tell you about Leija?
Vargas being shot when he fought Delahoya lmao, only ****en haters say this.
Delahoya stomped threw everybody from the get go thats one main reason people love to see him fight even today years later.

Ferocity, sorry to disaapoint you buddy but I'm NOT a "pacman nuthugger". I FULLY expect Oscar to beat him. And I actually think 135 Oscar would of beat Pacman. Like I said, I think Oscar is good. But a lot of the fights he had were "tainted" cause the scales were ALWAYS tipped in his favor.
You can say that shit about a lot of fighters. People talk shit about Sugar Ray Leonard and not these young fans on this board but the fans that were around to see Leonard fight on tv not on video.
And stop with your bullshit that you've seen boxing for so many years, you've been exposed.
I understand your position. It's valid to say you don't have to win all your fights to be ATG. I agree. All the greats have lost fights. The true test is how they come back after a setback.
Oscar is HOF without doubt. He's probably an ATG, too. But, it's a real stretch to say or even imply that he's an upper tier ATG or the best of all time! PLEASE SHOW US A WEIGHT DIVISION THAT OSCAR CLEANED OUT AND HELD TITLES TO FOR A SIGNIFICANT PERIOD OF TIME. If you're talking about being among the best of all time, then you have to be able to fulfill this standard. Now make your case.
So i guess beating the top guys at every division you enter isn't enough? lol, another hater.
Can't even belive you asked "why Delahoya never fought Tszyu" lmao, go ask Vince Phillips why.
Listen Hater!
Who took a less difficult path to get himself there when compared to other fighters?
Less difficult, lol, he fought the top fighters of every weight class he fought.
Name the other fighters that had a tough road?
When i hear haters talk like this, i know for a fact you guys are little kids who weren't boxing fans when Delahoya stepped in the scene.
Did you even read the last line of my post that made you flip out?? Go back and take another look, then tell me what's wrong with the post I'm quoting now. Go ahead, I'll wait.

That's quite a selective post.
Anyway, I've said my piece. People can go and verify for themselves if they feel so inclined.
Kenny Weldon, you seem like a nice enough chap but methinks thou protest too much.
Yeah, just like every other fighter in the sport. Boxing is not about what you weigh outside the ring but what you weigh in it. And the last time we saw Pacquiao, he was making his debut at lightweight.
How could Oscar De La Hoya been considered too green for both? He fought Paez well before he fought Ruelas. And Paez was much more experienced and older than Ruelas. Actually, he was just OLD period since Ruelas had stopped him a few years earlier. Paez was washed up when Oscar fought him, the perfect name to put on his resume with absolutely no risk - a size and age mismatch. The Ruelas win, at least the manner in which he hammered Ruelas, was very impressive. But that wasn't the first time Ruelas had been stopped early, know what I mean?
Good, umm, loss for Oscar.
I'll ignore the fact that Quartey hadn't fought in a year and a half and many thought won the fight. This was a solid performance by Oscar against a solid opponent.
What makes you think Vargas was in his prime? Age? Because if that's the case he got washed up pretty young too. Vargas was damaged goods, in fact possibly the worst case of damaged goods from a young, talented fighter in recent years.
Are you referring to the rematch? You kinda glossed over this.
Bob Arum forced Oscar to "fight" Bernard. Where did you get this from? Did he force them to become partners a couple weeks later?
I'm not here to scream nuthugger or make homoerotic references. I'm just not sure what the point of your post was. Seriously.
