Honestly I think they are... People acting like Jake La Mota was something special when he lost almost every big fight he had, or came lucky against others. People acting like Rocky Marciano was great just because of his resume, beating some of the people he beat were just back for paydays... and you guys moan about joe calzaghe? Ricardo Lopez had a much better resume at 51-0-1 but because he was a strawweight he goes unnoticed.
Some fighters I agree with, sugar ray robinson, muhamed ali etc, were both terrific fighters.
Thoughts? Don't forget these guys got on ATG lists... !?

I think the Heavy Weights of the past are WAY WAY WAY WAY WAY FUCKING overrated... But it's not just boxing.. Nostalgia seems to erase the flaws of history and paint everything a golden light.. Which is retarded since human existence tends to be progressive..
Jake hardly ever got knocked down as he just leant against the ropes whenever he was hurt... Besides he always got TKOed hardly ever lost on points.
He was TKO'd 4 times, once when he threw the fight against Billy Fox, once when he ran out of stamina against Ray Robinson in their sixth fight and twice retiring in his corner at the end of his career against Bob Murphy and Danny Nardico.
Yes they are overated just as they are in other sports as well. IMO there only a few people in all sports no matter the generation that could actually compete on a elite level.
It's not exactly outrageous to have Aaron Pryor beating Ricky Hatton by KO and it's not like Pryor fought in the early 1900's.
LaMotta had a great resume and certainly didn't lose every big fight he was in (wins over Cerdan, Robinson, Zivic, H. Williams, all hall of famers). He hardly fought any soft opposition in all of his 100 fights.

Pryor would beat Hatton, he's not that old ether.

when judging boxers you have to keep their career in context of their era...
I mean anyone in general from outside our era. Its wierd cause a recent poll had an olden fighter beat Ricky Hatton by KO by like 90% votes...

LaMotta had an Iron jaw and was never knocked down. Even in the fight he threw he was stopped against the ropes and never touched the canvas. His will and determination were unmatched in a boxing ring. he fought Sugar Ray Robinson 7 times and granted he only won one of those bouts he was the 2nd best in his weight class during his time to Sugar Ray not too bad of company. The fact he fought close to 100 fights and never hit the canvas is impressive in itself....Lefty
olden fighters? you mean from days of yore?

I know what your saying, but boxing is different than other sports. With sports like Football older players get overrated slightly because evolution has taken it's course, and the caliber of athletes now as compared to back than are worlds apart.
Boxing to me is different, I think it's one of the only sports where you can actually compare fighters across generations.
