IMO it is Robinson, not because his record was outstanding up into he retired and came back a mess but because his combinations, speed etc was more outstanding. Ali was a good talker, entertainer and was good in the ring. But who was better?
Liston, Williams, Frazier, Norton, Foreman is better than anything on Robinsons resume.
Lamotta would lose to the best middleweights (Hagler, RJJ, Hopkins, Monzon to name a few) i don't see why this is such an amazing win compared to Liston or Foreman.
SRL moving up and beating Hagler was a much better Feat.
Really? All those fighters were better P4P than Armstrong? I mean Hank was past it, but even old he was better than Liston or Williams, and beat Zivic, Angott, and Larkin on the road to Rob. Gavilan? Really?
And Lamotta was BAD...you have to be to have wins over Rob, Holman Williams and Cerdan. Any Middle in history has their hands full with LaMotta. Those fighters were all bigger than LaMotta but to say they were all just flat better is absurd. Robinson fought more top guys and was better for a much longer stretch of time to get to another of your points. At an age, past prime, where Ali was getting saved vs. Norton (III) and losing to Leon freaking Spinks, Robinson was splitting FOTY's with Basilio.
Ali was a great fighter, and one of the two greatest Heavyweights ever, maybe the greatest...but P4P, all time, he's a shade off Robinson. Oh, and one-punching Fullmer is every bit as impressive as beating Foreman.
Skillwise, it goes to Robinson. That man was beautfiul. But as far as greatness goes, I've gotta give it to Ali. The man fought the biggest opponents, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, and the U.S. Government. The George Foreman fight does it for me. He could never have danced around Foreman, he used his mind in htat fight and knocked Foreman out. Plus he lost over 3 years of his prime, we'll never know how it would've turned out if he was active during those years...
Unlike MOST ppl. I go by fights I've actually SEEN. Not word of mouth or hopping the bandwagon. If you guys have seen more then 40 of Ray Robinson's fights then I'll shut up.
Oh, there are guys close but Ali ain't one of them. Langford, Greb, Duran...they can all run with SRR but Ali himself gave the nod to Rob.

Prime Ali was the superior Athlete. blazing hand speed for size and very fast feet. He fought the better opposition, even when he was past prime he still managed to beat great fighters. Robinson had a lot of wins and such, but they weren't against amazing fighters - to me this means nothing. I can see a lot of other great welterweights giving Robinson trouble, I see few great heavyweights beating a Prime Ali, the comeback Ali that even fought Frazier and Foreman - he could lose i'm sure, but not the Ali that fought Liston.
So i'm going with Ali, he had a great resume.
How did Robinson not beat great fighters? Is this serious or are you just joshing? Gavilan? LaMotta? Basilio? He fought 16 former or current undisputed World champions (eight more than Ali across three weight classes) and faced/beat more Hall of Famers and, at 40, got jobbed to a draw in the third Fullmer fight way past prime. He NEVER lost to a Welterweight in over 90 some tries.
Robinson was almost the perfect fighter, incredible speed, power, agility, technique. Ali was a distinctive Heavyweight, with a lot of factors that made him the king of the jungle in the HW division for so long. You can debate on the opposition they both faced but it would just be speculation, I don't know, so many attributes to consider, but I'd say Ali=#1 ATG Heavyweight, Robinson=#1 ATG pound for pound.
good post. backed.
Ali would have been undisputed best no doubt if it weren't for Vietnam and prison. Still I think the record he amassed over the years is superior(albeit slightly) to SRR
robinson, he was the greatest and the greatest there will ever be
over two hundred fights with 19 losses, most of these coming when he was in the later stages of his career. everyone who saw him box at the time said he was the greatest and i think he is the greatest ever. :boxing:
