Miguel Cotto mentioned that he believes Oscar v. Manny doesnt help boxing it actually hurts boxing.
In my personal opinion I think this is a fight that actually helps boxing...
I know many are still thinking about floyd v. oscar and what a bust that turned out to be with how uneventful the fight was and seemed to have big moments of lull in the fight...
I think this is a similar idea to oscar v. floyd...two major names in the sport (oscar and manny) fighting on a huge PPV event...
the reason i think it helps boxing is due to how big these two superstars are in the sport...they will bring in the casual fan...
the major difference between floyd v. oscar and oscar v. manny is that i believe we are instore for a much more competitively exciting fight. much higher tempo...more action.
i think in the end its going to do great things for the casual fans and bring in some more hardcore fans by the time the fight is over.
what are your thoughts and opinions?
i dont like this fight...but i gonna watch anyway...im gonno watch how dlh gonna act in this one...coz on b-hop bout it was so fake..so i hope he can do the right acting this time..
Mis-match???
manny jumping 3 weight classes???
oscar taking an "easy" fight???
what???
i know everyone is entitled to their opinions but come on...
this fight isnt nearly as much of a mismatch as the critics here at boxingscene, the media, or any armchair "expert" will tell you...prime for prime it would be a huge mismatch and oscar puts him down on his ass at least 2 times then forcing a TKO win late in the fight...but we arent talking about a prime de la hoya...we're talking about an oscar who is slowing down...his speed is showing less and less and he seems to tire out sooner and sooner the longer his career lasts...
manny is still in his prime...fast...strong...etc.
DLH's downfall is greatly exaggerated IMO, of course he's not what he once was but he's not that far gone, even a DLH who is 70% of what he once was is enough to beat Pacquiao soundly. His stamina was better against Forbes, he threw about 700 punches that fight, which is pretty high. Pacquiao carry his quickness up is not guaranteed and he didn't look all that strong against David Diaz when they were on the inside, that's why Pacquiao didn't stay on the inside much, in and out was his game that night.
as far as the weight arguements go pacquaio has weighed in at 146/147 unofficially on fight night in his last couple of fights...
so if he comes in at 147 in prior fights i dont see the issue if he's fighting a WELTERWEIGHT BOUT against de la hoya who will ALSO come in at 147...yes im well aware oscar will baloon 10lbs or so by fight night...
look back at floyd v. oscar...floyd was noticably smaller and lighter on fight night being easily outweighed by de la hoya but he didnt run into problems with size...
only legit arguement anyone has about size is height...de la hoya is much taller than pacquaio but its not different than when margarito fights cotto...or when williams fights quintana...and those fighters held their own.
As you said, DLH will probably be close to being a middleweight in there at fight night, Mayweather and Pacquiao have very different styles, Mayweather's style is much better at dealing with bigger guys and Mayweather had fought at 147 for 3 fights and spent a year and a half at 147 prior to the DLH fight so he was used to the weight.
And what cannot be discounted is that Pacquiao has just recently moved up to lightweight, whereas DLH has been at junior middleweight or above for the past 6 years. Just because a guy weighs in at a certain weight at fight night doesn't mean they'll be effective fighting guys at that weightclass.
the size arguement is useless to me...it would be different if pacman never came in higher than 135 on fight night and now is trying to jump to 147...but he already comes in at fight night at 147. besides the extra weight could only help him in terms of power...his speed will suffer slightly but remember that de la hoya's speed and punching reflexes arent what they were 5-7 years ago...
No, there's no guarantee that the weight will help his punching power, especially against a guy with DLH's chin, in fact moving up in weight could have the totally opposite effect, his punches may not have the same effect on opponents as it has in the lower weight classes, as I said, DLH's downfall is exaggerated, he still has those things but I can agree he definitely isn't what he once was.
only KO or stoppage i can see is late possibly...this isnt going to be over in 4 rounds leaving the fans feeling cheated...there will more than likely be more action in the course of the first round than there was when oscar fought floyd.
I disagree about the stoppage, 1 shot from DLH can end it, 1 shot from Pacquiao, I doubt would hurt DLH, if Marquez can hurt Pacquiao then DLH definitely can. I will agree that Pacquiao-DLH will have more action that Mayweather-DLH had or Mayweather-DLH 2 would have produced.
and i dont know why people trash talk this match (like they did when floyd fought oscar) because on december 6th you will either be there live, shelling out $50 to watch it live, be at a friends/bar/etc. watching it live, or you will be streaming online...
point is not many will simply refuse to watch it...why? because they are two legit superstars fighting and the potential for a good fight is so great a title on the line doesnt change anything...not for me...for you...or the casual fan.
the casual fans LOVE oscar and pacquaio...floyd/oscar set the PPV record and while oscar v. pac wont come close or beat that record it will still be a mega fight none-the-less and the boxing world will be watching and if it provides competitive action as well as a dramatic/exciting ending you will all praise how you'd love to see it again.
im not going to guarantee its "fight of the year" status but its going to be 3 times the fight floyd v. oscar was and its going to keep you watching intently for all 12 rounds.
Again, I'll agree that it will be a better fight than Mayweather-DLH and that a lot of people will watch this fight but I think it'll hurt boxing because I really can't see a way for Pacquiao to win this, while the fight might be entertaining, I think it'll be one sided in favor of the bigger man and I doubt the general public and most definitely boxing fans want to see a one sided 'megafight'.

My friend, this is going to be B-Hop-Pavlik, only Pavlik is going to be a little Filipino dude. Bank on it.
I hate it!
Pacquiao's a great fighter, but there's no way he can put on that much weight to take on a guy who was fighting until recently at 154 and 160. Look at Gatti when he went up to fight DLH, and Pavlik when he went up to fight Hopkins. These fighters don't carry the power and speed with them to the higher weights, especially if they jump weight classes and don't take things gradually.

If I'm betting on this fight I want to make sure I take the pinoys points, not just 5K.
I love it, I can't wait to see Oscar destroy Manny.

Casual fans who only know of DLH will by this fight and feel stupid when it ends in a quick KO after they shelled out $50 for it. Pac is damagin himself by goin up to a ridiculous weight for himself in a fight he can't win. He's also gonna have to come down for his future fights which could harm him more. There's more meaningful fights for him at LW and DLH needs to fight a real fight or just stick to promotin. This fight is bullshit, I've lost a ton of respect for DLH, and I hope Margarito catches him in a dark alley somewhere.
it wont end quick...de la hoya will carry the fight until the 9-10 round and finish him

so you believe mismatches are good for the sport?
i guess for the wwe sports fans mismatches are entertaining.
This will be an intriguing fight due to the hoopla and drama associated with it. You already know who I think will win but it's not all about my nationalistic pride. The Pacman will give ODLH the test of his boxing career simply because he has yet to go up against a rare dynamo like Pacman. JAT

People will hate to admit it but mega-fights like this, whether they are legitimate or not, cannot hurt boxing. The more interest the better. I see where Miguel is coming from in relation to how true boxing fans would view this matchup but in actual fact that isn't the issue of key importance.

I think its bad for boxing. Sure, it will get the casual fan to buy it. But there is no title at stake. Oscar is moving down a division, and for all intent purposes Manny is moving up 3 divisions (one fight at lightweight does not get you acclimated there, no matter how good you look). If Manny wins by ko there will be cries of fix. If he wins a decision people will say Oscar wasn't at his best and was just in it for the money. No matter how Oscar wins people will say he was picking on a little guy just trying to cash in. I hope Im wrong, but I think there are more "con's" than "pro's" to this fight.
