he was. but losing to calzaghe and having 95% of the media predict he would lose to Pavlik was extra motivation. i suspect he was getting a little complacement (by bhop standards) with his once a year fight schedule and his against the odds victories against the winkster and tarver, both of whom were favorites. i think he took zaghe a touch lightly, too! I don't think Hops took Calzaghe lightly and he sure didn't say as much. There was loads of vids of him doing hard training, being checked out by fitness people seeing just how fit he was (very, a body of someone in there 20's). Trainers were interviewed, full team working him hard. He also had the motivation of Calzaghe already being high in the p4p rankings, it being a US vs UK thing, which mentioned and turned it into, along with race. There was way more mental motivation between the fighters too as we know, that wasn't the case with Kelly either.

What makes you think he wasnt motivated for that fight. I would say he was extremely motivated. It's just Calzaghe and Hopkins have such horribly clashing styles, they would never look good fighting each other. Hopkins still spent most of the fight moving backwards and running. What does that make him, stupid as they weren't hard punches, or pussy not holding firm and actually fighting, back? I'm playing devils advocate here, but Hops style and best chance was being extremely defensive, trying to ruin Joe, run and counter. He did that and it was his best chance at nearly stealing it it was, but it meant he spent way more energy then he did with Pavlik, and Joe made him spend loads more energy by throwing and chasing him down unlike Kelly. Two totally different fights. you're right. i feel that if bhop was as motivated as he was for pavs, he would have performed better. the 10 lbs made a difference. they year layoff made a HUGE difference (and probably directly affected those 10 pounds as well as b-hops body was better conditioned for pavlik). that being said, calzaghe got the job done. props to him. i think he's a great fighter...

calzaghe averaged under 59 "punches" a round against hopkins (far beneath his average).... the 223 he "landed" were not effective for the most part (well, i guess in terms of scoring with the judges they were, so i take that back). still, they never came close to hurting hopkins and a lot of those didn't even land at all.... Fight night calzaghe was 182, hopkins was 190 Yer so 8 lbs lighter than Nard, quite a bit. Slightly more disparity in weight than compared with the Hopkins Pavlik fight I think, though most wouldn't have heard as such with all the weight excuses for Kelly. Pavlik was 174, Hopkins 180 I'm pretty sure.

Calzaghe's used to being 168 so was unlikely to push right to the 175 limit losing speed and maybe not making it.
