Here's why. Lacy wasn't quite proven. He was more hype, and he had good power. Pavlik was a proven champion and considered among the elite. He's had all kinds of publicity. He's been in ESPN the magazing and all kinds of other shit. He was being groomed as possibly the face of boxing, and then he gets humiliated. While Calzaghe-Lacy was surprising and certainly a great win for Calzaghe, looking back at it, it's understandable. This Hopkins-Pavlik fight was shocking on a whole other level, and it's devastating for Pavlik.
Very similar situations.
99% of people who are now saying Lacy was untested were arguing the opposite before the Calzaghe fight. He was the betting favourite (which I know as I made a killing on a Calzaghe UD victory - thanks to the ref not stopping it earlier!) and pundits were queueing up to crown THE great American hope. Or Dope as it turned out.
Pavlik was in a very similar situation - relatively unproven (which he is - two bouts vs Taylor don't a proven fighter make) champion fighting against a veteran and made the heavy favourite by the bookies. Not quite as bad a beatdown but it'll be interesting to see whether it stalls Pavlik's career like Lacy's has been.
All it proves is that Hopkins and Calzaghe are ATG's and better than anything else around at the moment. Nothing we didn't already know of course.
Cotto took a beating for 5-4 rounds and has his face messed up but he wons rounds and was in the fight, Lacy took over 1000 punches (from what i've been told) and didn't win a single round other than the point deduction.
ok....I see what you mean:fing02:....... from that perspective Lacy's whoopin had to be the worst in boxing history and I have to admit, I've watched thousands of fights (maybe, all I know I've seen alot of fights) and I've never seen a beatdown like Joe gave Lacy....Real Talk......I was referring to the way Cotto and Lacy lost. They both got a whoopin regardless of how you look at it, one guy fought back well and the other didn't.
Cotto got beat into submission, while Lacy was able to finish the fight and walk away from the war with a little more than Cotto could......thats what I meant my dude.
Off topic......no classes today?
I basically agree with what Silencers and BennyST said. Lacy had way more defences, was expected to steam role Calzaghe by a vast majority. The total opposite happened which stunned the boxing world. Can't be said for the Hopkins win, as impressive as it was.
I also think Joe Lacy Pavlik, so would be even more dominant than Hopkins was as he's able to dance around his man, use more angles and more punch out put.
Are you saying this site gave Joe more of a chance against Hops, then they did Lacy? Please clarify and explain.
Pavlik was not really almost gone in R12 come on. There was no onslaught over an extended period of time, he wasn't knocked down, and said he was only hurt a few times, and not badly.
Lacy was getting overwhelmed and pounded every round, was had more damage to his face, was knocked down, and seriously nearly out of there in at least 2 rounds. Pavlik was not close to being stopped or was there any calls for a stoppage. There were and still are loads of calls, that the Lacy fight should have been stopped.
why was calzaghe the betting favorite then? he was also the favorite against kessler and hopkins but you keep pretending he overcame impossible odds. stop trying to revise history. i know it sounds better to big up how big of an underdog joe was but lets stick to the facts.

so this site gave more of a chance for Calzaghe to win than Hopkins. dunno where those 4 to 1 betting favorite numbers came from for Pavlik, but I dont really think Lacy had that kind of advantage.

overall Lacy's beating was worse, but it was actually pretty close. Pavlik was almost gone in that 12th round.

:lol1::lol1: True.....Lacy's face was f****** mess!
Lacy got it far worst than Pavlik.......but I bet both will remember both of those whoopins as long as they live....2 unforgetable beat downs........I think Cotto got worst than Lacy though:lol1:

I gave Moby round six, but he never mounted any momentum. But then again even if you split each round into minute long segments you couldn't even find a single minute to give to Lacy. And Calzaghe was basically written off before the fight, Lacy was considered the shit.
Great post BennyST.
Yeah I think both fights are comparible as they were essentially the old pro's teaching the younger guys a boxing lesson. Even though Calzaghe-Lacy was more of a beatdown, Pavlik had no answer whatsoever to an awesome Hopkins, same way Lacy was with Joe. I've watched the fight twice now and only remember one decent punch from Pavlik during the whole fight and that didn't even phase Hopkins.
Lacy got murdered. Pavlik jus took a boxing lesson and a beating. Pavlik's face was bloodied but not deformed. Lacy looked like a truck ran his face over.

Lacy took more of a beating. Hopkins was pretty much written off too though, and Pavlik was much more highly regarded in the boxing world than Lacy. I just think that this win was much more surprising. I was surprised with the Calzaghe-Lacy fight, but not as much was known about them compared to Hopkins and Pavlik. I found Hopkins' victory much more surprising.
TBH i wasn't surpised Hopkins won at all, Pavlik had to much going against him and Hopkins has proved in the past that age is just a number to him. I was surprised that Hopkins fought coming forward but I wasn't surprised with the outcome and the domination, I kinda expected a Tarver-Hopkins like performance.
Calzaghe-Lacy was much worse, virtually no one picked Calzaghe and Lacy wasn't coming up in weight (not taking away from B-hops win) Lacy was heralded as a monster and Calzaghe as a spent force most people had written him off because his last few performances were not good.
It really wasn't, Lacy was hyped up so much and Calzaghe was pretty much written off by everybody, Hopkins, while being written off by some people was not considered that big of an underdog by that many people.
And the beating Lacy took was way, way worse.
I agree. calzaghe vs. lacy was the most one sided fight i ever seen. it was even worse than mayweather vs gatti cause the fight went the whole 12 rounds
I dont care what you say and how you say it but there is NO Hopkins-pavlik was worse the Joe c/lacy, Even Lacy's own promoter begged his corner to stop the fight.
That was a 100% beatdown, That was like punching a punchbag for 12 rounds.
I think most people are forgetting the hype that surrounded Lacy before the Calzaghe fight. It was huge, even bigger than what Pavlik was beforehand! He had already defended his titles numerous times compared to Pavlik's once against Lockett. Lacy was even more revered because all the boxing gurus honestly thought he was the next Tyson. People forget that, and deliberately as well, because of the embarrassment after such a hideous beating. No one wants to own up to the hype they themselves had for Lacy. It will be much the same for Pavlik now. Everyone will start to say "Yeah, I knew it, he was too green and couldn't handle Hop's experience and ring savvy".
The simple fact is though that nearly everyone picked Lacy to murder Calzaghe. Not to get through by a volume punching decision win or anything even remotely like that. They expected him to steam-roll Calzaghe within two or three rounds by complete and utter brutalisation.
With Pavlik, people were wondering if he could be the first to KO Hopkins, not he would definitely do it and within a couple of rounds. Not many thought he could and many had their doubts as to whether he could win at all. If you look at most of the predictions everyone gave it was things like this: "I think Pavlik's youth and hunger will get him through and he may even be able to stop Hopkins but it's also very possible that Hopkins could take him to school and win through his experience. He's done it before when he was written off" etc etc.
People are doing their best to forget Lacy ever existed, but, the fact is that the hype surrounding him was a lot greater than it has been with Pavlik. A lot. Most folks were saying similar things about them. Stuff like "They are what's right with boxing", or "These young men are the future face of the sport" but Lacy was still more dominant a champ in the brief time he was and was expected to kill his comparative Hopkins in Calzaghe. Pavlik was just meant to win and it would have been really impressive if he could KO Calzaghe who had only been down the same number of times as Hopkins. Calzaghe was thought of as over the hill, too old and shot. Even most of the British were saying that Calzaghe didn't have a chance.
I just hope that this fight doesn't do to Pavlik what the other fight did to Lacy. He's f*cked. That was a beating that he'll never get over. Pavlik got embarrassed, but he wasn't meant to literally kill Hopkins, just beat him by youth. Lacy very nearly ended up the way Calzaghe was supposed to, it just happened to be a twelve round sustained beat-down instead of three round, killer-beat-down KO.
Either way, they are both magical performances by guys that were considered done and big underdogs. I'm still stunned at what Hopkins had and what he was able to do. I even thought after the first six "Well, that was expected. Now he'll run out of gas and Pavlik might still win the decision", but he didn't! It was great! B-Hop is some fighter.
Aaaaand... CUT!
End thread.

They were both quite enjoyable clinics. Ok, Im lying...throughout the whole fight I was saying 'please, please knock him out Pavlik...cmon!!...! go to the body..! ahhh...'
but at the same time, it was fun to see all that skill in action. thats boxing for ya.

Hopkins was a 4 to 1 underdog, only about 3 of the journalists off this website picked him to win, out of around 20.
not sure how that compares to Calzaghe-Lacy.
