So is it possible that I was right about Pavlik not being that fit at 170 lbs? He looks like a monster against middleweights, but rather ordinary at a higher weight.
** He and Poppy had to be broken up at the final bell, so his fitness had nothing to do with his loss.
It was more Poppy completely altering his style and probably training much harder after his shameful Calzaghe performance. Steward and he both said this was his best performance ever, and I agree completely, one of the best technical fights I've seen.
He generally controlled the distance in the pocket and kept ring center to pick shots beautifully. Kelly was off, but still a big strong guy in his face and it takes a lot of conditioning Poppy didn't have against Calzaghe to stay in so close to throw and then to slip shots for 12 rds. Younger Cotto couldn't complete the mission against Marg either.
So Poppy switched the gameplan and for some reason team Pavlik never got any clues about it and wasn't properly prepared. I'd say the fight was similar to Maxim beating Patterson early in his career. Kelly a bit more advanced in his career, but being so tall and gangly he's just starting to enter his prime and got schooled that his power ain't always gonna cut it by itself, a tough lesson for an invincible slugger.

I predict Hopkins will Knock this kid out in the late rounds. He looks to be in great shape. If he had any problems I believe he fixed it in Training canmp. Its just the kinda guy he is...I predict a K.O Victory along with an announcement to retire.Feels like a Hopkins night, NIce build up too.
** Shouldn't put money where you're uncomfortable, but your logic escapes me.
Pavlik has always looked like a stick whilst beating the jimjam out the top guys. Poppy used Lee Haney to train him making the jump, so now he looks like Tarzan and fights like Jane. His work rate just above a cadaver and judging by his last 5 fights, he's ripe for the taking.
JCChavez didn't have a muscle showing in his body and did ok. Big George in his comeback. Joe Frazier, he looked like a butcher at Safeway. Duran never muscled up either.
Maybe Poppy can surprise, but I doubt it. I understand Kelly didn't want the fight, but if he wants any chance at Calzaghe he had to make this fight, and he's definitely a pro in how he takes care of his business.
Would've been a great fight if Poppy was 5 yrs younger, but the executioner gonna slip and fall under his bag-o-outdated tricks.
My point was basically that Pavlik looks less fit at 170 than he did at 160. That would contrast with Arthur Abraham who looked better at 166 than he did at 160. Just an observation. I expect Pavlik to win handily.
Pavlik hits like a truck, but he lacks the efficiency ,of a say Gerald McClellan,in his punching technique. Gerald had a similar build but was extremely well developed in his latissimus dorsi .The strength and elasticity of his back muscles allowed him to punch with far greater explosiveness IMHO.
If boxing was won and lost on who was more chiseled, then:
Zab Judah would have beaten Carlos Baldomir
Jermain Taylor would have beaten Kelly Pavlik
Evander Holyfield defeated James Toney
Or was it just me? Hopkins looked considerably more chisled. I'm still picking Kelly, but I'm not tempted to put any major bets on him.

boxings who are too chiselled lack fluidity, look at lewis, Calazaghe, even Duran they are/were never chiselled then if you look at fighters like Bruno and lacey ...
Not true, some aren't fluid but it's not because they are chiseled they are carrying too much muscle mass.
Roy Jones, Sugar Shane etc. are some of the most toned fighters and there are VERY fluid boxers.

I don't think margarito, Shane or Floyd have stamina problems....and they don't have that crappy body that Pavlik does.
lololol, Pavlik does have one of the worst body's on a boxer. He's up there with the likes of Juan Diaz etc.

Totally true. I was also about to mention Calzaghe. Compared to lacy, for example, he looked pathetic! But we saw what happened.
