I don't think he was all that great. Good to very good? Yes.
But a future ATG if not for the head injuries? I don't see it. Most of the ATGs, or at least second-tier greats, who are big punchers have a lot more to their game.
I didn't see that with G-Man. He had decent skills, but nothing special. He had a solid chin and sick power, but there's more than that to being an ATG, especially when it comes to fighters in more talented divisions with more skilled fighters (not heavyweight).
Roy Jones would've schooled him as a pro. McClellan was tailor-made for James Toney. Toney would have beat the shit out of McClellan at 168.
McClellan used to be involved in illegal dog fighting.
Benn showed he was a dog lover as he sent the G Man to a lifetime of darkness.QUOTE]
You make me sick.
lol
Riz u should know son Gerald and Dog Jokes go hand in hand bro..
That english ref sucked balls. It was known that europe favors there fighters, and stop fights early in favore of eruopean fighters when american boxers go to fight in europe. That ref shoudl have stopped that figh in the first round. And benn was hitting mccallen illegally behind the head. It was clear there was something wrong with him, if he was well without inccident he'd beat benn as he was before aftermath.
I think he could of been great, but i recall a lot of hype for him cause he was koing everybody. I would say he had good skills, defence, balence, distance/range was all there for him and he had a good reach that i recall. Roy v. Mccallen was talked about but now remembering i dont' recall Hopkins name even mentioned during mccallens era. Can't recall or even if toney v. mccallen name were mentioned since toney was around at 168 i think where roy soon went.
Its never clear if Roy would of fought Gearald.
How should he have stopped the first in the first? Benn showed after the first that he was perfectly capable of fighting past the first round scare, Benn wasn't fouling him bad at all they were clubbing shots not rabbit punches, McCllelan wasn't complaining either. People like Hatton, Hopkins foul much more than Benn did in that fight. It was an unfortunate ending to a great fight and the Bobby George no man deserves what happened to G-man that night.

He actually beat Jones in the amateurs. That said, I don't think he could have done it in the pro's and would have always played second fiddle. I think Toney would have beat him too. But if you stood in front of him, more times than not he would take your head off. He had a warriors mentallity though. Would have been nice to see a full career instead of the way it was tragicly cut off.
Yeah, I would have picked both of them over him in the pros but it would have been interesting to see.
If a fighter falls through the ropes the have 20 seconds
Yeah, I was aware of that, what I'm really getting at is Benn might not have got up at all if he hadn't left the ring
It's bad to say but I think his condition was somewhat inevitable, he was complaining of headaches and nausea after the first Jackson fight, he took a lot of big shots from one of the biggest puncher in history.
But hypothetically, he could have given Jones one of his toughest fights and maybe ruled 168 for a while and maybe even move up to 175 and won a title or two there but his defense was always leaky, his chin made up for his defensive lapses, it would have been interesting to see how he would have got on against a guy like James Toney, who was a very, very good counterpuncher.
The referee, I believe is French.

He did have him down for longer than 10 in the 1st though, amazing to think it could have been all over by then
Benn was unreal that night too

All right. Could hit like Julian Jackson, had a beard, was aggressive, and would have given RJJ his sternest test in his prime. So, yeah, the dude was pretty freaking good.
He was a very good fighter. Crazy power. Was expected to destroy Benn and move onto a super fight with Jones which many gave him a good chance of winning. Benn just wouldnt be denied that night though. On that night, Benn really couldve beaten anybody through sheer heart and will.
