Last week, in a written column in a British newspaper, promoter Frank Warren made a quite brutal attack on the fighter he used to promote in Joe Calzaghe. Warren claims the things he wrote in his column were nothing but a retaliatory response to some of the nasty things Calzaghe has said about him recently. It is common knowledge the two men ended a hugely successful partnership earlier this year, and a lawsuit is now pending on the part of Mr. Warren..
Some of the things Warren wrote last week included: Claims that Joe often pulled out of fights at short notice, leaving him to "pick up the financial mess." That he wanted Joe to face Kelly Pavlik instead of a "washed up" Roy Jones - who Calzaghe himself claimed was such in his recent autobiography. That Calzaghe was unwilling to put in sufficient effort so as to get publicity, and that Joe falsely claims he was held back and his career was "put in shackles" by Warren.
Hard hitting stuff to be sure, but Warren says he regrets having had to write it, but that he did so only as a response to Calzaghe's blasts at him in the press and was really left with no choice. Without a doubt the relationship that proved hugely successful for over ten years has soured enormously.
In yesterday's edition of Wales On Sunday, Joe's father and trainer Enzo responded to Warren's article and the claims made in it.
"I was very disappointed when I read it," Enzo said. "It seemed like one-way traffic, like Frank was trying to hypnotise the public into only seeing things his way. It seems only about what Frank did for Joe, never mind what Joe did for Frank. If he hadn't had world champions fighting for him, where would Frank be? Joe deserves more than being undermined like that. This is being done only because he wants to promote his own fight. But we are in a world where people are free to make their own choices."
The fight Joe wants to promote himself is, of course, the upcoming Roy Jones Junior bout - a match-up Warren says adds nothing to Joe's legacy.
"I preferred the Kelly Pavlik fight as Jones is way past his best," Warren wrote last week. "In the 2008 edition of his autobiography, Calzaghe states Jones is 'washed up.' Yet he is trying to make out Jones will provide a legitimate challenge. I believe I could have got Calzaghe far more money than he secured himself. He agreed a 50-50 purse split with Jones. Roy must have thought he had won the lottery. A fight against Pavlik would have done far more for Calzaghe's legacy."
There is little doubt Warren is correct on this last point, but the fact is the Calzaghe-Jones fight has already done good business and will likely be an entertaining affair. Still, it's very interesting how Joe's former promoter says he wanted a Calzaghe-Pavlik showdown, whereas Joe opted for the 39-year-old Jones. Maybe, just maybe, Joe never wanted anything to do with Pavlik after all. Who knows for sure?
My whole point is that Pavlik is a worthy opponent and he would give calzaghe a tough fight. And some of you lick calz nutts so hard you say that calz would expose pavlik as a lacy clone. Thats a horrible comparison since pavliks defense is so much better then lacys and so is his boxing skills.
Lacy clone is too harsh, Pavlik is better than Lacy, but I truly don't believe Calzaghe would have that tough a time. Something like the Kessler fight probably.

It's not bad. BPP folded like a deck of cards. If he'd given us all 2-3 day bans in the first place, I doubt as many people would've cared.
Perhaps now he will learn to use fair and equitable punishments.
Sense? How are you enjoying your freedom? I am underwhelmed by it. I actually think that post you made might have helped, anyone would feel bad if they were the victim of such a humiliation.
Dirk Digger= award for the worst poster on boxingscene. Congrats!!! :439:
I've seen every single one of calzaghes fights you nutthugging fan, and stylesitcally pavlik could cause calzaghe problems and pavlik could also have problems too. Both fighters are stylistically bad for each other. But you're a nutthugger on an entirely different league, you won't admit pavlik would cause joe problems. No, you're one of those morons who compare pavlik to lacy.
I was actually talking about you attempting to say their two records are pretty much the same you dumb cunt. Get a grip. Every guy that wins a title and defends it once is now equal to a guy whos defended it 21 times over a decade and won the linear title in a new weight class.
Piss off.
As for stylistically, Pavlik is absolutely tailor made for Calzaghe. Unless Calzaghe is shot, they might as well gift wrap Pavlik and put a nice big bow on his bald head.
I said Hopkins would cause Joe problems and make him look bad. I think Jones will cause Joe problems but Pavlik?
Please.
Utter stupidity

Taylor, Taylor, Miranda, Zertuche, Zuniga, and Mckart
Hopkins, Kessler, Lacy, Eubank, prime-Reid, prime-Sheika
About even if you ask me.
the only good person on pavlik's resume is taylor and he had life and death in those fights.. i am in no way a fan of calzaghe but his sorry resume is more impressive than pav..
if Pav beats Hop better than how Calz beat him then i call it even.
No, it still wouldn't be close. I'm not going to debate it with you because anyone who thinks Pavlik is anywhere near equalling calzaghe's achievements in boxing clearly as a bad case of letting what they want to be the case lead them into thinking that it is the case.

Whilst I can see what you are saying I think you are wrong. A win over a Pavlik at this stage would give a massive boost to Joe's legacy, it would not simply be another W, as you put it.
Maybe I overstated a little, it wouldn't only be a win, it would be a good win too, one of Joe's best. The problem I have is with the notion that it is vital in order for Calzaghe to 'prove' himself. You can't legitimately claim that Kelly Pavlik is 'proven' himself, with such limited experience, in his case a record that relies entirely on one opponent, you can always come unstuck in your next fight. The lesson is there in the career of Jermain Taylor. he was 'proven' and then quickly became unproven again. If Pavlik gets past Hopkins then he has a much stronger case. I guess what I'm trying to say is that there is a diference between believing a fight would add to a fighters legacy and believing it would define it.
If you really think this you are insane.
You really need to get your mouth off calzaghes dick for once. I'm a fan of Calzaghe and Pavlik, and it was a real bitch move for calzaghe to chase after someone he called a shadow of there former-self. If he does beat roy, it doesn't prove shit.

Kelly pavlik is not some super powered arbiter of boxing ability, he is a young middleweight with a title win, one nice name on his record and one defence against a sub-par journeyman.

The reality of Kelly Pavlik fight is that it would be more meaningful than a fight with Roy Jones, but the only thing it would prove is tha Joe hasn't quite got old yet. Beyond that it would prove nothing we don't already know. Kelly pavlik is not some super powered arbiter of boxing ability, he is a young middleweight with a title win, one nice name on his record and one defence against a sub-par journeyman. Joe Calzaghe has beaten young, prime titlists in the past and beaten the reigning LHW linear champion. Pavlik would be another W on his record, nothing more.
