The winner of Santa Cruz vs. Pitalúa fight will face WBC number one ranked lightweight contender Edwin Valero of Venezuela in the interim championship fight by the end of the year.
What has Valero done at 135 to earn a title shot? Much less be ranked number 1 contender.
Valero is a beast. But he needs to beat a top fighter. This will be very interesting. But I hear he already slapped around Santa Cruz brothers in sparring anyhow, it was on maxboxing
Than again, he has to face the winner of Santa Cruz vs Pitalua, and i doubt that Valero can hang with Santa Cruz. The only recognizable name in Valero's resume is Vicente Mosquera, Santa Cruz is going to stop the Valero hype train.
...There goes that theory, i should know better than to write off a Columbian bomber.

Has Pacquiao relinquished his WBC lightweight strap?
YES!!!
Do you think he'll be defending that belt against quality opponents after he wins that interim belt? He'll go back to Japan and defend that belt against Japanese Pornstars.
Are you aware that Valero has previously been unable to get a license to fight in the US? Now that he does, you can expect him to cash in ASAP. You can count on him being in at least one big fight in 2009. Saying he should give up his career shows that you are uninformed of the facts in this situation.
good for edwin.
it only took 3 guys over him to jump to 135 and 4th to get robbed for him to get the #1 ranking.
i wonder how high the other guys below him now would be ranked if they got to fight the same opponents valero has...... hmmm......
pac is a fraud! fight the undefeated valero pac. or else you're a fraud!
Look, it's like if Roy Jones in his prime moved up from MW to SMW. He never had 1 FIGHT at SMW but you already know he was the best SMW in that division or thought so so you gave him the number 1 ranking. The WBC thinks he is the best fighter other than their champion so he is ranked as such.
you say that like its a bad thing
The fight is definitely fan friendly and i wouldn't mind seeing it, I just agree with the thread starter that he shouldn't be ranked that high.

Agreed...I can't wait to see him fight against the top dogs.Wether he's the truth or not
Yep, this is the only way we find out the truth. Valero is the biggest X factor in the lightweight division.
i really dont care... Edwin Valero is an exciting come foward fighter always looking for a KO. I wanna see him agianst the top at 135 if he gets exposed or not.

BUT he has fought for wbc latino titles or whatever making him ranked. Valero has no ties to the wbc. I know i sound nit picky but this isnt fair for other fighters who have been working their way up and Valero comes in ranked 1
You do have a legitimate point. Very likely the WBC thinks Valero will bring them money or they have just simply been bought (again).

It is stupid it's Vitali coming back as the number 1 condender instead of the fighter working there way up to a title shot, Haye coming in at number 5 when he unified a division below theoretically he should be ranked number 1 because he unified the division below Valero picked up a piece of the title, Guzman as well etc. It's proberbly all about the money each fighter will rake in.
The WBC will be able to charge more on commision fees on Valero because he will bea bigger draw than the other contenders because he's exciting etc.
To be honest, he's just as legitimate as Pitalua. He's never beaten anyone resembling a lightweight contender.
