Calzaghe says Pavlik is overrated while I've read post here saying Calzaghe's overrated...who do you think is hyped up more than their true worth as fighters?
vote and discuss...:boxing:
I'd have to say Calzaghe is much more overrated that pavlik is.
Calzaghe has fought guys like Bika, peter manfredo jr, and an old/WAY WAY WAY out of his prime hopkins and gets talked about as if he's the greatest of all time according to some posters.
Pavlik is still on the way to the top and making a real legit defense of his titles.
He beat the best current (at the time) middleweight to EARN those titles; Jermain Taylor.
he has good boxing skill...and iron chin...and packs on hell of a punch.
Pavlik hasnt even had the chance to defend his crown properly but has shown a lot of promise...however he's not argued as the p4p best as many calzaghe worshipers do with him.
This will probably be one of the only objective posts in this thread
I think the only knock against Calzaghe is his resume. You would think that in 10 years of dominance, the best fighters on his list of wins wouldn't just be Kessler, Lacy, and a 4-punch-a-round senior citizen in Hopkins. Having said that though, his RESUME is the only knock against him. Speaking on skills alone, I think Calzaghe has got an insane skillset as a boxer, and is one of the most versatile and adaptable fighters in the game even at his age. He didn't sit down on his punches against Hopkins, but he has his whole career against anywhere below the light heavyweight division.
Personally I think Pavlik is one of those old school throwback type fighters. He grinds it out and is very exciting cos you know everything he throws is gonna have weight behind it. However, I think his game is quite a bit more limited than Calzaghe's. He can't counterpunch. He has very little upper body/ head movement. He's very slow footed. He's got a very accurate, effective, and powerful 1-2. That's about it. This isn't a knock against him whatsoever. Shit, look at Margarito. He's as one dimensional as they come, but he still destroyed Cotto. That 1-2 is good enough so far for him to have destroyed and cleaned out everything in his division. We haven't seen him HAVE to adjust his game against a crafty defensive boxer. Which is why I'm so looking forward to him fighting Bhop.
I think Calz is more overrated based on resume and who he's fought. But I think Pavlik is overrated in terms of his skillset as a boxer. I like Calz for his unique style and ringsmarts. I like Pavlik for his gut and willingness to make it an exciting fight, cos you know anytime Pav is throwing a punch its not just to score but to punish.
Who's more overrated Cal or Pav? Neither both are the best at their divisions and have cleaned out most if not all the top guys. Both guys are the goods.
which division is more talented right now MW or SMW? theres your answer on who should be considered better and who is overhyped

There's no question both are elite fighters, but who of the two are projected (by media, by fans for example) as being more than what they really are as fighters? I mean Pavlik is now a P4P lister and some consider Calzaghe an ATG...
Personally, this is a hard choice. Pavlik has KOed almost all of his opponents including Miranda and former P4P lister Jermain Taylor and Pavlik hasn't lost. Calzaghe on the otherhand hasn't tasted defeat either. In fact, being undefeated for 15 years is not an easy feat. He has also defeated Kessler and Hopkins I believe he also has every right to brag.
Neither really, but the reality is Pavlik beat Taylor who beat Hopkins so you gotta think he is the real deal. We will soon find out how he deals with Hopkins himself though then we can see who is better...sort of.
Joe and Kelly need to face off, bottom line.
lets put it this way kelly pavlik is one of the most underrated, he would destroy joe cal i dont understand what calzage is trying to do running his mouth the ghost is gonna snatch dat dude
Pav is still young and making a name for himself, so of course they will say it's him. He is also only 26 and been in the game far less than JC. I think it's an unfair comparison given the fact above. Give Pav 10 more years, then let's compare resumes. I voted Pav because he will undoubtably not take the direction in boxing that JC has. Pav gets my vote on heart alone.
