Jones by easy decision after 12 rounds of making Hopkins look like a rookie. Hopkins is smart, cagey, blah, blah, but Jones, for all his downfalls, is still vastly superior athletically to Hopkins...faster, more accurate, more active, better at finding or making holes, and I think he's in better shape than Hopkins, too. Not by a great deal, but a little, and that matters.
we should even refrain from TALKING about these matches of HAS BEENS because next thing you know the crazy promoters see these and ACTUALLY GOD FORBID PUT THIS FIGHT TOGETHER...
wow... that would be saddd... more so than Pavlik/Hopkins... more so than Calzaghe/Jones
dudes on the crutches need to step down already... we have an amazing new school ready to take the spotlight but these guys milk the tv's and fan's money. sucks.
It'll be very interesting to see what Hopkins has left against Pavlik. It's gonna look a lot like Calzaghe-Hopkins unless Kelly's power comes into play. He'll have to be wary his chin doesn't come into play too but, overall, he's sturdy.
Similarly, we really don't know what Roy Jones has left either. He's at that age where you lose it all in one night. Some believe it's already happened--if they're right, this fight could prove embarrassing for Roy AND Calzaghe.
Roy and Hopkins together? Only if they both lose.
I think Pavlik's power will be key. Its not so much his work rate or foot work its going to come down to his power. I think the consistent power shots will have HOP wore down. I don't really see PAV ko'ing him but I see Pav out working him and over all winning a UD. I like HOP too. I don't really like the fact he's fighting Pav...
About Roy. Yeah no one REALLY knows but Roy himself. But clips of Tarver 3, Handshaw and the Tito fights will prove he can fight off the ropes while taking hard shots (harder than Joe can ever throw at this point in his career) and countering solid shots and scoring and showed us good movement and solid punching when he wants too, to over all win the fights.
Anyway You know my opinion on Jones and over all it will be a great fight (Jones Calzaghe) and either way I still see Hop and Jones fighting each other in the end. Its just one of those fights that are guaranteed to happen if they want it too. They will save it for there very last fight, if it will happen.... IMO
Hey I agree with ya for the most part.
I think many people (Calzaghe fans) are saying Hopkins can beat almost anyone now (trying to hype Joe's SD win over Hop).
The same people that claimed HOP to be OLD and would get his ass handed to him by Joe Calzaghe are the same people saying HOP will beat Kelly Pavlik and Roy Jones.
One minute he's old and should retire, the next he can beat this guy or that guy. Its funny.....
I agree with most of your points....
But over all I don't see HOP presenting enough to win against Jones. I see HOP holding a lot and Jones landing more. Sound familiar? I see your points, but I don't think Jones would let HOP spoil his game. He can adapt just as Joe did. I see it being a boring SD/UD win for Jones. as you say it by "default". Jones would have just thrown more punches......
But hey I can still see these guys fighting each other for there LAST big money fight... There is so much drama and hate that I can see these guys fighting each other one more time, maybe next year who knows......
Hop would have to agree to the 60% to the winner and 40% to the loser.

I have to say after so many view points being expressed about Roy being way past it and finished I'm slightly surprised to see so many people to favour him beating Hopkins now.
Firstly I don't think Roy is anywhere near as past it as is commonly made out. He still has immense speed (more than Calzaghe) a supreme boxing brain, is fit and somewhat adaptable.
However, being past prime suites Hopkins style way more than Roy, even given how Roys adapted to suite. Hopkins unique minimum work rate, defensive, tactical counter punching style suites an older fighter immensely. Let alone the fact he's not long coming off wins over Tarver and and close loss to the p4p #3. I also think Roys recent wins are underated, but their not as impressive as what Hopkins has shown.
Hopkins style is a nitemare for someone of Calzaghes style. And lets be realistic, Roys style isn't a million miles away from Joes. Roy would rely on his speed, and tactical ability, and whilst their both probably slightly better than Joes, not enough to win him the fight imo. This is bearing in mind Joe had a poor performance. Hopkins would spoil Roy, with Roy not able to keep the work rate to win on default, like to some extent Calzaghe did, certainly on some rounds. A Hopkins UD has to be favourite.

Hehe, indeed I did my man, because I agree with a lot of what you say. Which is why I'm discussing it with you, I give a damn. I just feel on a couple of notes you may be over optimistic which I've explained. Roy is not shot he's just different and people find it hard to recognise that for what it is. Far easier to say huh, he must be finished.
Roys a terrific athlete, has better speed and tactical ability than Joe. But with Hopkins I just don't see him doing enough to trouble Hopkins. It's not easy for me to admit a Calzaghe with slightly less stamina, work rate and pressure may not have won that fight against Hopkins, but it's true. He relied on them, and Roy could not and that's the determining factor for me.
This isn't as unlikely a fight as we might think either though, they have unfinished business I think even Hops himself said once.
lmao. i definitely am that type of dude sometimes. if roy said he was going to fight him blindfolded, i'd probably say...wellll maybe if roy can't see joe thats a good thing because! lol
but in all seriousness, i don't like roy on the ropes either. But we'll see if he really lays on the ropes alot.
you might be right about hopkins over jones now, i can see what you saying. Honestly, i'm not sure about that one the more i think about it.
Its a toss up. They're NOTHING compared to what they used to be. STILL!! Style wise RJJ stands better chance against Calzaghe.
Style wise as in Roy has a better chance against Calzaghe then Bhop or style wise as Roy has a better chance against Calzaghe then Bhop had against Calzaghe? Because if it's the second one that's dead wrong.
you actually gave me karma recently for a post.
you might be right, i'm starting to see more and more what your saying. yeah i'm always going to be kind of optimistic when comes to roy jones.lol but I think i'm pretty reasonable overall. its not like i'm claiming the roy of 97 is coming back to ko calzaghe.lol

Perhaps I caught a couple of key posts of yours, but you started a thread recently I thought was too optimistic on Roy fighting off the ropes. He couldn't do this well, for long enough with Joe or Nard imo, Joe as he can be straight footed and quite good close in and Nard cos of his power and clever movement, clinching.
I don't think Hopkins quite deserves p4p #4, 1 behind Calzaghe, but certainly 5/6. Considering that, his recent performances and comparing those things with Roy, Hops has to be favourite. With Nards style really suiting his age, I just cannot see Roy winning. Imagine Calzaghe not chasing or throwing as much in the Hops fight, and occasionally getting fairly tired and slower footing. That right there is Roy, and a Hopkins not getting so tired, taking advantage and winning more rounds. Result, a Hopkins UD.
As much as I am fans of both, and still rate both as damn good these days even past prime, Hopkins is just not easily beaten. Especially not with the commonly used tools of Joe or Roy like hand speed.

If you've read my past posts, i have said on numerous occasions that Roy should be the underdog against Calzaghe. Calzaghe logically is the pick to make. I've also said that Roy Jones Jr. is past his prime, and will never be what he once was. I just personally believe he'd beat Hopkins now. Should be be the underdog against Hopkins now? thats a tough call, because Hopkins is 43 years old. But you might be right there considering Nard has been fighting the better fighters...

I would like to offer my unbiased opinion to a biased discussion. In their prime no question about it Roy Jones could outdo Bhop in just about every category. But, believe it or not Roy Jones has been out of the picutre for a loooong time. His last meanigful fights were his three losses to Glen and Tarver in 2005-2004. Bhop since Jones' disaapearacne has taken over a divison (from the man who put Jones away), defended it aginst Winky Wright, and came damw close to defending it against Cal. The fact that Bhop has stayed active against top notch competition and Jones has been fighting nobodys once a year will be the difference.
the point about hopkins fighting better comp is a good point and i respect it. but i also think jones was right in fighting lesser comp because he need to regain his confidence after those 3 bad loses.
I meant as in, a high enough work rate to win most rounds. Joe could run round throwing punches all night, Roy could not. Roy would move and throw less suiting Hopkins.
Dude, your in slight denial about Roy. I wasn't harsh on Roy in that post, and you can only agree with the sentence which was solely positive?
I'll stick my neck out the window and say Roy is not as shot as commonly made out all day I agree. But you have to accept, facing any top 5 p4p guy (Calzaghe or Hopkins) he would be the underdog by a reasonably significant margin, and for good reasons. Add to the fact Hopkins style really doesn't suite someone like Joe or Roy, you have to make Hopkins even more of an over dog still.

i disagree about roy not being able to deal with bernard's workrate. however, i agree with what I quoted. Hes not as done as people say, people act like hes Ali when fought Berbick. No disrespect to Ali...

But Hanshaw got destroyed by a real prospect once he stepped up...
I'm just saying Hopkins has more left than Jones does, even though neither are particularly fun to watch anymore...
If you can hit Roy, you can KO him, and if Calzaghe lands clean, then a side-by-side comparison with the decision win over Hopkins might make it more apparent...
i give credit to roy for fighting on, but it all depends how you look at it.
you might be right. we'll have to wait until November 8th, should be fun.
ands he suppose to fight great fighters after three straight loses, two by knock out at 36 years old. He needed some easier fights to get him ready for the culmination of his attempt at a comeback. Say what you will about Hanshaw but he was a decent fighter and he was 9 years younger.
