I have to ask, because from reading posts on here I now have the distinct impression that there is nothing this guy can't do, that he can win fights any way he wants to, going forward, going back, on the ropes, centre ring. You name it. He's been "the ultimate counterpuncher", "an awesome body puncher", "a defensive master", "an attacking tornado", "the smartest boxer in history" etc etc.
Far be it from me to question any of this, but I always thought that in his prime he was mostly an unorthodox and supremely gifted offensive boxer, who nontheless was not at his best when placed definitively on the backfoot. He always seemed to me to rely mostly on his athleticism and natural skill, to the detriment of boxing fundamentals, particularly defensively. Not that it ever mattered!
Nowadays I see him as a fairly static orthodox boxer who boxes behind a high guard, has a very fast, crisp and snappy jab and can still unleash some excellent combinations when he wants to. I don't think he's some sort of tactical wizard/ counter puncher though....
Am I wrong?
I agree with most of what you say. I'm just not sure that Roy's type of counterpunching really involved 'going backwards'. Surely most of the time it was more a case of allowing his opponent to make the first move and countering before the guys punch even got close to landing? He was so good at it that his opponents rarely laid any leather on him and forced him to box truly defensively, in the face of a sustained assault. I would say Roy simply waited for openings to attack.
I've already answered the question - he spent most of his time going backwards, whether he was counterpunching or not. Why not check his old fights?
He said so himself, for starters.
Two, he was a natural counterpuncher who was at his best when you were the aggressor. In fact, Jones spent about 75% of his time (in his prime) going backwards, walking his opponents into big shots.
Jones in his prime struggled against BOXERS, particularly patient counterpunchers - Eric Harding, Montell Griffin, etc. Guys who were aggressive usually got KO'ed quick (Sosa, Brannon, etc). In his prime, he woulda ate up a guy like Glen Johnson for breakfast. But someone like Antonio Tarver would've always given him problems.

Who's Roy Jones Jr and where is he from? Where can I watch some of his fights? Can mayweather or margarito beat him? How about a prime Vargas?
haha that was a good one

Ummm...he was at his BEST going backward.
his power is alwayss undermined because of his amazing handspeed. he started carrying his light heavy opponents after his KO of Hill.
Then thats probably around the time i started to say wtf Roy what happened? And lost some respect for him as he just carried fighters. Even Foreman said its worse that Roy does this cause he giving them permenite damage for 12 round instead of a ko which isn't the same permenite damage.
I was a huge Roy fan, that guy was amazing, hated that he beat Toney but Roys skills and POWER won me over. But then once he started letting fighters off the hook is when i started to tune out.

roy carried a LOT of opponents. that was disappointing sometimes but also hilarious at others, like when he was embarassing telesco with looping windmill punches and sticking his tongue out at him. foreman got so pissed, but i loved every second of it.
Its funny cause he tried to carry Richard Hall, but couldn't pul back enough from dropping him over and over again. i think he knew that fight could make a highlight video in itself and wanted more footie....
Andre Dirrel will have an easy time at SMW, one of the weakest divisons in boxing. if Pav and Taylor move up though, then maybe not
I think that is a wildly presumptuous statement. Dirrell has shown nothing yet to suggest he can even compete at world championship level, let alone have an easy time. Lets wait and see what happens as he steps it up.
Thats bullshit to the tenth degree. Look at Andre Ward cheap imitaion of Jones Jr but without power.
Its simple to see Roy was a puncher, he allowed 80 percent of his opponet to go the distance with him. He was so cautious that instead of going for the ko, he would lay back and punch the guy repetidly instead. But when he had a huge advantage over the middleweight who could hardly take his power he ko'd most all his middleweight opponet. Gets to Light heavyweight now he is not willing to take a risk in going for the ko cause he may get hurt. I seen enough of Roy coming up to know that he had real fucken power anybody who disaggree is ignorant. Roys power got him a shit load of respect, just so happens that he had other attributes that stood out too.

Yes. In the fights I've seen his jab has been his major weapon, though others tell me that in the fight he stopped Hanshaw (which Jones couldn't do!) he showed even more attacking skill and really mixed it up. There is some suggestion that he may be a bit of a light puncher, but his power looks OK to me, I think its because people compare him to his brother, who was/is a legitimate heavy hitter.

his athleticism is a far greater attribute than his power. he was never a 1 punch ko artist but rather an accumulation puncher.

And a wicked Jab. A hard jab which reminds me of Mayweather's jab at 130-135.

Yo I checked out Andre Dirrell after seeing it in your sig and dam is he good.
He is quite good, but really the sig is my little joke. Its my prediction for a couple of years from now that when calzaghe has retired and maybe beat Jones and Pavlik, many people will start saying he ducked Andre Dirrell.
As I said, i do think Dirrell has talent though, which was why I noticed him, good speed in particular. He's someone to look out for in the SMW division.
Which Ali and Leonard fights have you seen to base that comparison on?
Loads of ones. The one that sticks in my mind for Ali is Cleveland Williams when Ali boxed superbly, with Leonard I would take probably his first victory over Hearns. When I say technically better, I mean in terms of all around boxing ability, tactics, movement, defence, going forward, going back. I think both Leonard and Ali were both more technically complete fighters than Jones and showed it in a range of fights across their careers. Look at the variation between young Ali and old Ali, or between the way Leonard fought Duran the first and second times. Also, just as Jones could throw all kinds of onorthodox punches, Ali had a similar talent defensively. I'm sure you've sen the gif of him just moving his head out of the way of punches with his arms by his waist and not moving his feet. Crazy!
