MMA is growing in popularity day by day. Boxing is still more popular, but most of that fanbase is an older demographic. The 15-30 male would choose MMA over Boxing to watch most of the time.
These reasons are varied and many but I will list the ones i can think of:
*MMA is more violent. The kids love violence nowadays.
*MMA is much, much, much more cleverly marketed.
*People like to be associated with new "In" sports.
*People would rather watch a streetfight because its something they can relate to.
*There are more succesful white fighters.
*Fights are shorter
*Fight cards are packed
*It seems the mostly ADD riddled youth of america dont appreciate the beauty of a master boxer. It just isnt EXTREME! enough for them.
People have been prediciting the death of Boxing ever since Kickboxing came onto the scene in the 80s. That sport was succesful for many of the reasons above but died out in the 90s when it went out of fashion.
It do not beleive MMA will die out as rapidly. This is because of the interent. MMA fans can talk, slag off boxing, watch fights and just generally spread the word. I was watching a fight on youtube when i scrolled down to see a ton of poorly written, energy drink fuelled slag from MMA fans.
This signifies the average MMA fans attitude towards boxing. It is a threat and goes against everything their sport stands for.
Comparing PPV numbers isnt really far considereing Boxing is usually more expensive, As is what you read on the internet, as MMA fans are generally much more vocal and young enough to grow up with the internet.
Anyway. Boxing needs to do something to get back on top. Here are some suggestions that ive come up with. I have tried to make sure the suggestions dont change boxing too much eg: Shorter fights would mean we dont get any epic Leonard/Hears, Gatti/ward type back/forwards type fights.
*Make the gloves smaller. Maybe a 6oz for the lower weights and work your way up.
*Scale up the scoring for effective agression
*Unify the organisations
*Televise fights for free
*Hopefully a unified org would make the top fighters actually fight eachother
*Increase penalties for clinching
*Stratergies to induct young talent such as schoolastic activities
*More television ads
*AND PLEASE PACK THE CARDS FULL OF GOOD FIGHTS! THIS ALONE WOULD SAVE BOXING!
What do you guys think?
There is no chance that boxing is in danger of MMA. Ward v Gatti I, II and III; Toney v Jirov; Corrales v Castillo have done the sport of Boxing the world of good. These fights are seen as the turning point for Boxing after the showboating, greed, corruption etc that's plagued boxing during the 90s.
Boxing is steeped in such a tradition that it will never be surpassed by this MMA. Only the first ever series in late 90s was just awesome to watch for the brutality. Boxing is a real man's sport where all you have is your fists to protect you and attack with. There's no rolling around on the floor trying to choke the hell out of eachother, were talking about hand-to-hand combat here.
Look at PPV numbers that Boxing generates which is astronomical plus other endorsements.
Boxing = Number 1 Combat sport. Period!
No MMA fight will ever come close to these fights mentioned.
Nice post!
You guys are laughing now, but slowly MMA is making ground very slowly.
Flawless, they're two different sports. Some will like both, some only MMA, and some only boxing. They can exist together though. The biggest thing boxing has going is over a hundred years of tradition. It will take a long, long time for MMA to equal that, if ever. I like MMA. I train in it. But it will never be number one in my eyes.

Boxing would kill MMA if they just showed ring card girls in between rounds acting as sexy as possible and gyrating.
I mean who gives a shit what the trainer or the commentators say.
Just showing a bunch of booty shaking for the full minute between rounds.
MMA would be toast.
Please don't use EXC ring girls as examples. $ka£a hires actual hos.
WTF was that!!!???
Dude that is in no way shape or form a correct way to throw an over hand right. He ought to be ashamed of himself teaching those kids to throw a punch like that.
It a Kempo version and it has been effective. It's more of a stun move then an actual KO blow. It has mutiple purposes as well. Many wrestling based fighters use it for deception. They can either stun their opponent and go for the shot or make him lift up his arms and make the shot easier.
The top dogs in boxing make so much more money than the mma cats because it is still generating so much money and it continues to be profitable. When an MMA guy is able to claim that he made more money in one year then a promoters whole stable (mayweather or dlh vs. ufc) then I'll consider mma a true threat. Until then, boxing will continue steadily as long as it keeps generating revenue and great fights.
Hopefully it will force boxing to give us better fights. I wish the two sports could exist side by side but the truth is; the MMA fanbase has already had a hatred for boxing instilled in them. Im not talking about every MMA fan, just the majority.
They see the UFC execs talking mess about boxing and they want to join in. They also see boxing as a threat.
Well....this MMA fan says your full of shit and you need to stop clogging the communal toilet with it.
I dont think theres anything boxing as a whole can really do to help its self. sure one organization and one belt would be amazing but lets be real, that will never happen. The biggest problem with boxing is it has no star. oscar still sells but hes not a guy to actually get excited about. Mannys amazing and is easily the leading canidate but i dont know how many americans would really jump on his bandwagon since hes from the philipines. and just for the record mayweather was a terrible poster boy for boxing. you have to actually box to enjoy him. the average fan cant get into his style. so to sum it up we need a boxer who is exciting and puts it all on the line, but also has great chrisma and can speak good english. also like everyone says boxing needs better marketing.

Boxing has been around forever and will always have a fanbase. I like MMA, but its not taking over boxing. If anything it is forcing boxing promoters into giving us better fights.
Boxing will always be around and will always be popular, the history of this sport is very rich. Go to any gym and you'll see the gym full. Boxing is all about skill - technique, good stance, footwork, hand-eye co-ordination, head movement, throwing fluid combo's. MMA on the other hand is just some wild brawl shit, throwing wild looping "strikes" and hope they land, 2 full grown men wrestling on the mat, which looks very disturbing. throw an MMA "striker" in the ring with 16 oz gloves and see how he goes standing up with no wrestling against a boxer-puncher. on the other hand, throw a boxer-puncher (say, a kessler, who throws quick hard accurate punches) in the cage with those tiny gloves and see how the "striker" goes.. He could try take the boxer-puncher down but would get KTFO trying to step in a close and "shoot"
David Haye did an interview in a UK MMA magazine recently and gave his thoughts on the differences in striking styles between MMA and boxing, and defending takedowns as a boxer:
"A traditional boxer can't get off with the same punches he'd be able to throw in a boxing match. You have to consider getting hit with fists, legs and takedowns. Balence-wise, and in terms of leverage, the two styles of punching are completely different. In MMA, you're always moving and changing angles to avoid shots, clinches and takedowns. That automatically takes away the balence and the moment to set you'd need as a boxer"
"Unless you adapt to the kind of stand-up needed in MMA, you'll get taken down as soon as you set your feet up to throw a big shot. A boxer wouldn't be as effective punching wise in an MMA contest as he would be in a boxing ring. A lot of boxers don't realise that and think they can just turn up and bomb the MMA guy out. While there's always a chance of that happening, it's only a slim chance."
"I'd sometimes play games with MMA guys down the gym where I'd attempt to get off a clean shot before they could take me down. They would usually take me down eight times out of ten. I'd land my shot only twice in ten attempts. As I've practiced over the years I've now reversed that ratio and am able to get my punches off around eight times out of ten. It's taken me over six years to eventually be able to achieve that."
(On a potential MMA fighting stance) "(it would be) completely different to the way I box as a pro boxer. It would resemble more of a kick-boxer's stance and there'd be less emphasis on getting heavy on the front leg".
So, bottom line, you can't be as effective in MMA with an orthodox boxing stance.
And, imo you tend to see more wild brawls in MMA because MMA hasn't attracted as many great pure athletes as it one day will. Great pure athletes in MMA are guys like GSP who have been training a variety of arts since they were very young. We haven't really seen an athlete in MMA like GSP go up against another athlete of similar abilities. MMA as an art form is still being refined. As more and more kids train from a young age specifically for MMA, the skill level displayed in fights will go up.
Im on the NSW mid north coast. Ive been to about 7 am tourneys and 1 pro one. They are usually half empty. I even saw Sakio Bika fight and most of the audience did not know who he was.
Ive seen a Martial arts fight night too, that place was packed.
Ya can you beleive that shit about the hogs breath though? omg....
i should have pointed that out, yes alot of those guys do have skill, they have muay thai, kickboxing, jui jitsu backgrounds, but when ive watched ufc they point out before the brawl that fighter A is trained in kickboxing, fighter B is trained jui jitsu, then the brawl starts and hardly any of their skills come into play, they start throwing wild strikes, or end up wrestling on the mat trying "mount" their opponent, which looks very distressing. it doesnt matter what they're trained in, the shit still turns into a wild brawl.
and boxing doesn't turn into wild brawls?
it happens.
just like in boxing , in mma there'll be technical fights and brawl fights.
if you're not into the ground game then it'll just look like rolling around on the floor.
i never got serious into wrestling or jiu-jitsu but i had a friend who was all-city wrestler in high school and i would roll on the mat with his other wrestler friends and a few purple and blue belt jiu-jitsu guys he knows , there is a lot of skills involved in grappling.
i watch boxing for striking for mma i like to watch the grappling. striking in mma is boring to me. i'm the guy that wants to see the fighters go to the ground.
yeah because there's no skill involved in mma..... :nonono:
boxers are better skilled boxing.
that doesn't mean mma guys have no skill.
they're mostly wrestlers and brazilian jiu-jitsu guys that's why they're not that good at boxing.
mma is not bar room brawl like as it used to be 15 years ago.

yeah what skilled fighters the UFC has.....
looks like hes fuckin trying to bowl in cricket haha i would get told to go home if i threw one of them at the gym
what do you expect he's a kenpo karate guy?
like i said the skills are different.
if you don't like it then don't watch it.
don't make fun of guys because they can't box if they're NOT boxers.
a guy has been wrestling since high school. wrestles in college and tries out for a national team. he has skills it's just wrestling skills.
same thing for a guy training in jiu-jitsu for a decade trying to get a black belt. he has skills it's just brazilian jiu-jitsu skills.
you take a well skilled boxer and tell him to do judo and he looks funny you're gonna say he has no skill? he has skills it's just not in judo.

where are you from?
are you an aussie?
in canberra at the am tourneys the hall is usually packed
Go to any amateur card on a sunday in Melbourne, and you'll see the joint is packed, no doubt about it

mma is just a fad. the nazi, affliction wearing, tattooed skinheads wont be fans in a few years, watching the ultimate fighter series it looks like a kkk meeting
