I'm wondering exactly how many professional fighters turned pro with no (little would also be acceptable) amateur pedigree. So name some.
I'mm start off.
Dwight Muhammad Qawi.
Iron Alex....people SEVERELY underestimate Tyson's amateur career...Mike was a national champion, won some big tournaments, fought internationally, and beat some of the top amateurs in the USA in his amateur career.
yes i agree scully but the fact remains he didnt have a lot of am fights, but yeah his level of competiton was good so ur right. but the other people on my list achire moore, marciano, chavez sr, duran, mundine all had very very lil mundine and chavez sr having none.
black ink he had 16 apparntly 13-3.
and squabbles i tottally disagree with your comment. look at all the fighters i previously mentioned, chavez and duran are 2 of the most succesful latino fighters of all time, chavez didnt need no amateur system, and duran had a limited backround. obviosuly its easier if u are a succesful amateur because u will get matched and get a better contract when u turn pro, but does not mean u are a better fighter nor that people will "associate with u more" who do people assosiate more to roberto duran or dominick guinn who had 400 am fights. lol. the am system is piss poor to say the least atm. btw anthony mundine-best australian fighter bar tzyu. billy conn ledgend, archie moore 1 of the best who ever lived, marciano 1 of the great heavys, duran 1 of the best who ever lived, and chavez(0 am fights) one of the best too...

o btw not forgetting archie moore who had 9 and marciano who had like 11-12 (7-4)(8-4)? a lot of south american fighters skip the amateur system specifically mexicans...
julio casar chavez sr had none.
anthony mundine had none.
quawi muhammed had none.
billy conn had none
julio casar chavez jr had none
omar chavez apprntly had none
ricardo lopez had very few
tyson had like 27
margarito had 21
leija had 28
peter quillin had 8 i think
ricardo lopez son had very few..
tye feilds had 1 or none
roberto duran had very few...
anymore?
Point is, people with the more succesful amatuer careers are going to get noticed at the earliest point of there career by like the promoters. People without so great amateur careers have to work hard in the pros to get noticed.
Amateur experience helps a great deal with ironing the kinks and developing solid boxing fundamentals. Look at the records of some of these guys and see how it translated in the pros.
Oscar dela Hoya 223-5
Shane Mosley 220-12
Kostya Tszyu 259-11
Floyd Mayweather Jr. 86-4
Zab Judah 110-5
Miguel Cotto 125-23
Joan Guzman 310-10
Wlad Klitschko 134-6
Then you have people like:
Margarito 18-3
Librado Andrade 2-16
Anyone see a trend here?
A boxer can excel as a pro without a big amateur career and many have examples of guys who did. However, with that said, from my experience, if you have a choice...get some SERIOUS amateur background before you go pro. Look at it this way: Many can think of a guy who didnt have a deep amateur career but made it as a pro, true....but EVERYONE can think of ten successful guys who did both.
He fought in the 2000 Sydney Olympics and lost to Paulo Vidoz in the quarter-finals. He also fought and lost to Audley Harrison in the amateurs.
Well I guess my info on Peter's amateur background is wrong...Must got him confused with someone else..Thanks for clearing that up!
Sam Peter didnt have an amateur background if I remember correctly.
