I had Williams winning on the cards with his 12th rd performance sealing the deal, though it was obvious to me that he lost the "fight" unofficially. Margarito hurt him more than he hurt Margarito. If there were no round breaks, refs, and judges, I think we all know who would have finished who.
Also, if Margarito had another 3 rds, like back in the old days, I think he would have stopped Williams. Williams 2nd wind that valiantly gained him the last rd would not have lasted for the full 15. I also would predict Margarito to win in a rematch since he is starting faster and would come back even more prepared, but Arum is gonna let it simmer for the sake of business, no matter what excuses he makes about Haymon or anything else to get fools riled up with anticipation. This fight will happen, but they are gonna do some business first and make some money against mosley and another bigger name before capitalizing on the fans and media's call to fight Williams..
Journalists who had Margarito winning:
dougie fisher: seven rounds to five
Steve Kim: 7 rds to 5
L.A. Times’ Bill Dwyre: 7 rds to 5
Yahoo’s Kevin Iole: 8 rds to 4
Journalists who scored it a draw:
LA Times Steve Springer
New York Daily News’ Tim Smith
TheSweetScience.com’s David Avila
FightNews.com’s Francisco Salazar
So... enough with the talk about how Margarito was whooped, and all that. I like both guys, but neither one dominated this fight. It was close no matter who you scored it for!
PS> so what do you make out of the respected writers who prefered margarito;s performance to paul williams. granted, dougie and steve kim are a little biased for cali fighters, but obviously they know something about boxing.... what are your thoughts?!?
i like "close but clear" for williams. i'd like to see a rematch too, but arum is smart. they will capitalize on dlh (if possible), mosley, and/or judah before going anywhere near clottey and williams. that way, if they lose to clottey/williams (the biggest threats to margs), they will have made their money first. also, the anticipation will set up the later fights to earn a shitload more if Margarito has become a strong PPV commodity after DLH/Mosley. Judging by the delay in taking the pacquiao fight, i think DLH is considering Margarito more than people think he is...
i had it 116-112 williams thinking margarito would win in a rematch.
but he looked VERY impressive in his quintana 2. even though the fight was only one round he stopped backhanding the jab and really snapping it. he also sat on his punches and had much more power behind them. i wish the fight could have lasted longer to see if he really did improve but thatt paul williams would make the rematch very competitive
Williams dominated 8 rounds to 4 BUT Margarito was starting to connect more in the later rounds, Margarito obviously has more sting in his punches. And he was not "beaten up" he just clearly lost...
It wasn't a blow out but it was clear and obvious loss and 8 to 4 is borderline dominating..
All I know is, I got 50k on PWill in the rematch.
Call me a bandwagoner, nuthugger, what have you. I've seen what I have seen.
And PWill takes another one from Margarito.
Williams beat Tony CLEARLY.
and that was down to the performance that Williams put on.
NOT because tony started late.
that night Williams was the better man.
IF ANYONE THINK THAT TONY JUST LOST OR EVEN WON, WELL, THEY DONT KNOW A THING ABOUT BOXING.
I cant understand how people say Williams dominated ..lol
I had this 9-3 Williams. Sure, he appeared hurt in those 3 rounds I had him losing, but he DID dominate. Even if you don't agree with 9-3, "Williams dominated" is much closer to the truth than "Margarito won", and the only way this can be argued is if you are a serious Margarito nuthugger.
If Tony Can win 1 or 2 rounds of the first half, he'll take it..
or Possibly stop Williams late.
If Williams boxes well and moves well through the first half..he will win a D.
i cant c tone winning this fight, i got Paul all da way...tone should really really try 2 get da oscar fight....
Williams won 115-113 by my eyes. He controlled the first half, Tony controlled the 2nd half, Paul came back to take the 12th and earn the win. Co-sign those who call it close but clear for P-Will.
Sorry, it was close.. Marg started late..props to Williams he boxed well early and dug deep late..
Quintana Williams I wasnt close though ..
nah, i gave tone 4 rounds....so what do u think will happen in a rematch?
i used to think the same thing around the time he was relentlessly calling out mayweather. i think he has a little better d than people think (he is no mayweather by any means, but its not garbage either) and he is a trickier puncher with those uppercuts. they may not be lightning fast but they find their mark somehow.... he is quite a force actually...
plus to be a dominate fighter, work-rate and chin are pretty handy commodities to have!
they are handy, but i dont think his defense is good at all. everytime i see him fight he gets tagged up...now if Mayweather was 2 fight him he'll pop him all night & keep from gettin hit then everyone will say pbf is running but the game is 2 hit not get hit....
i gave it to williams.
first time i seen it i scored it 116-112 williams.
second time i watched it i scored it 115-113 Williams.
Margarito just didn't do anything early on to get the victory.
