I always thought that Leonard managed to keep some of the rounds pretty even until it entered the final thirty seconds where he would flurry and steal the rounds. Those first 3 rounds where Hagler came out orthodox cost him the fight IMO.
I seen the fight like 5 times and had SRL winning. I'm gonna go download to decide. Gonna send you my scorecard.
Watch it without the sound on. Don't let the croud influence your score. 30 seconds to go in each round, SRL throws a 8 punch combo, maybe 1 or 2 land and the crowd and judges go wild. It's bullshit!
Hagler landed the far better shots, Worked harder, Kept coming forward. He won that fight without a doubt. Hagler was the champion and there's no way Leonard did enough in that fight to take the belt from him.
I think with Sugar Ray's style the Judges saw it his way, but the score card is ridiculous. Leonard got banged up a bit on the ropes even though he managed to fight off of it. It was almost like the Leonard Hearns 2, Leonard knew what the judges liked to see.
I thought Hagler clearly won and that was a highway robbery
This is probably the most emotional fight in the history of the sport for me, and I refuse to believe that my eyes deceive me. I had Hagler by 2 rounds.
It was a close fight. Judging by most peoples opinions there was no clear winner. So to have it 118-110 is stupid. Just goes to show that dumb ass judges have always been there and will always be there.
the judge who voted 118-110, jo jo guerra, was from monterrey, mexico. as a young man he went to chicago for work, and in his spare time, he went to a boxing gym. one day his idol, sugar ray robinson, came into the gym. robinson was preparing for a fight and needed a sparring partner - specifically he needed someone smaller and faster. guerra was chosen to spar with the legendary champion. he could hardly breathe he was so excited. guerra sparred two rounds with the Sugar Man, and never forgot it. He told the story every chance he got, as he grew older and became a boxing judge. Thus, when he was asked to judge the Leonard-Hagler fight, he was honored, because the new Sugar Ray reminded him of his idol.
When Guerra scored it 118-110 for Leonard, he was honoring his idol.
That's a really interesting story, never heard that one before.
Wish they fought in '85...
Would have been a different result.
Hagler was just a bit past his best in '87. I am a big Hagler fan and admit if their was a rematch in '88 it would have been a similar result.

Really? That's crazy. I thought Hagler definitely took over the fight in the middle rounds. Ray was really tired and didn't get his 2nd wind until the around the 10th.
Yup, Jo Jo Guerra was the judge the Hagler camp picked. Backfired on them obviously. I had Leonard winning but it wasn't that wide, I thought Hagler gave the fight away by coming out orthodox in the first 3 rounds.
That score was crazy, way too wide. Ironically, that was the judge that the Hagler camp picked.

Yeah that scorecard is ridiculous. I had Ray winning but there is no way it was 18-10, that is a complete joke. How you could only score 2 rounds of that fight to Marvin is a total mystery to me.
What's up with that? That was a pretty close fight anyone see it as one sided as that judge did?
No, it was very close, big error on that score card, I have always felt so aswell. There was however a clear winner...
...And that was Marvin Hagler.
