This guy will be known for the guy that quit, and not the guy that went out on his shield...he,s damaged goods... once Margarito steals your SOUL you are never the same fighter... any thoughts???
Fight fan since the late 50's when each division usually only had one champ and there weren't mid-divisions, only 126, 135, 147, 160, 175 & heavyweight. I think that was the heyday of Boxing!
Was it Richard Steele? I think the fight was in the middle 90's, we bought it. We were all for Chavez and had given up hoping! Strange end! Those who bet on Taylor really must have been furious!
The villain in that Taylor-Chavez fight was the ref Richard Green I think it was who stopped in with about 5 seconds to go and Taylor helpless on his feet. If he had given Taylor a standing 8 count the fight would have been over & Taylor the victor. Chavez didn't start tearing into Taylor till the last 2 rounds. True though Taylor was never the same again!
Tony started wearing down Cotto around the 6th round. I think Cotto will recover!
Hatton has only had one fight which he won convincingly so it is premature to place him in that category.
Whilst I agree with your general argument I think it is a bit of a stretch to say he won that fight convincingly. He looked pretty ordinary to me against a reasonable but by no means elite fighter.
Had it been a one sided beating then yes since that will mentally fuck your confidence up but it was a close fight that I felt Cotto was winning before the 11th round TKO.
Lacy, Hatton, and the other guys that you mentiones took a beating and got outclassed that made them lose their confidence and were/are no longer the same fighters because of it but I'm sure Cotto feels like he was dominating the fight until that final round, he just was so gased out he couldn't continue.
I thought it was either even going into the 11th or maybe Cotto by a point but to say he was dominating the fight is ridiculous. He clearly lost several of the middle rounds of the fight and was staggered in a couple of them.
This guy will be known for the guy that quit, and not the guy that went out on his shield...he,s damaged goods... once Margarito steals your SOUL you are never the same fighter... any thoughts???
nah... cotto heart wasn't taken. cotto wasn't even beaten into submission... he just gassed.

I have my doubts. Once I saw Cotto retreat into the corner for the second knee, and the look on his face afterwards, I started to think about it more.
Let's break it down for a bit.......
Beatings like this don't come around that often in our sport (thankfully). Cotto did a damn good job boxing and moving, and avoiding confrontation as long as he possible could. But he was taking serious damage in there from Antonio.
It reminded me of Chavez/Taylor a little bit, although Cotto is nowhere near Meldrick and Tony is nowhere near Chavez. But it had that same feel, a vastly superior boxer sticking and moving constantly while being bullied on the insider by the bigger, stronger guy.
Cotto was spitting up copious amounts of blood, his mouth was mangled, his nose seemed ot be broken, he was taking it to the body extremely hard, and he was being stalked the entire fight. He had no breathing room whatsoever, Margarito executed a perfect throwback performance. The kind of shit that would make Jake LaMotta blush.
I honestly don't know if Cotto will be the same. Physically, his face iwll heal, he'll look the part of Miguel Cotto again in no time. But underneathe that is what counts, if he still has what it takes to go 12 hard rounds physically and mentally. Going into this fight his entire Country had his back, he's had enormous pressure put on him since day 1 to surpass Trinidad.
It's going to be hard to come back from that kind of beating. Jeff Lacy, Meldrick Taylor, and Ricky Hatton all come to mind recently. All of whom were ruined against the guys who beat them the most (Chavez, Calzaghe, and Mayweather).
Hatton has only had one fight which he won convincingly so it is premature to place him in that category.
Give the man his props and Cotto is the man-that dude can really fight for a human, but Margarito isn't human. Great fighters both. Even though Tony got long arms, it is a mystery how beautiful Margarito gets to work on the inside.
Cotto showed determination and is very intelligent in there, but the brutality advantage Margarito possesses was key. The key punch for him tonight was the left uppercut inside!
I give kudos to Cotto for giving Magarito the fight. Certainly DeLaHoya & Mayweather wouldn't have. If Oscar wants a dangerous opponent, after tonight i don't think you can get anymore dangerous than Margarito.
You cant judge it until cotto's career is over........
i mean when margarito lost to williams did he pack his bags ....
no he kept doing his thing....
when marg lost to santos twice did he pack his bags....
no he kept doing his thing..........
so we have to wait and see how cotto reacts to this loss......
Did Marg take a beating? He did more damage to the figters he lostto dumb ccksucker
I hope Cotto comes back and improves. He probably could have won had he had more conditioning/stamina to backpedal, counter and block/dodge hits.I mean come on first 6 rounds, Cotto was doing the matrix againest the guy, but Marg did beat him, I will give him his props.
he won,t be the same...
this is the same guy that blows his opponents out in every fight but now he,s the pumpkinhead after the fight and, makes it so bad is he didn,t get knocked out he gave up ... so the next time he gets in that postion again and it gets to hot in there will he continue on or will he revert back to what he did last night...we will see...
You guys are too quick to make judgement. I remember after Miranda administered Arthur Abraham a vicious beating, alot of folks here stated he'd never be the same and was "damaged goods." Well we all now how Abraham rebounded..
As for Cotto, we don't know how he'll react and might be a better fighter for this loss. Time will tell...

Thoughts? Yeah, you ever taken a beating a like that and fought 9 rounds with an open nose against Margarito? I thought so. Lets not make stupid future assumptions.

Shoot yourself, you sound like an 8 year old.
