I know theres a lot of cotto v. margarito threads going on right now but i felt to start my own thread and i'd like you all to come and give your thoughts and comments...
i dont know about you guys but my scorecard was absolutely even after 10 rounds. (95-95)
I say great job to margarito for that fight...he really kept pounding and pounding until he finally broke cotto...when it got to the 11th round i really didnt think it was going to stop early...i thought it would go the distance at that point.
cotto's chin held up better than i thought...way better than i thought...considering he went down on his own free will rather than getting dropped.
did anyone feel bad when they saw cotto's (wife/girlfriend; whoever she is) and his son crying? i felt real good about the fight until i saw that...its a sad sight to be honest...it ruined the rest of my night...i hate it when they bring wives and kids to fights of their fathers...it was really a sad moment.
where does margarito go from here? williams rematch? oscar de la hoya? cotto rematch? mosley? quintana? does he lure mayweather back for a fight?
where does cotto go from here? mosley rematch? (since it was close), does he rematch margarito? fight williams? go up to 154 for the right fight? possibly against mayorga if mayorga can make 154???
both fighters have tons of options.
im glad margarito finally got the recognition he deserves and i personally hope he gets a cotto rematch or mayweather.
im glad to see cotto really tried his best and if not a margarito rematch i would hope he gets williams...i cant see floyd or oscar giving cotto the fight since he lost.
discuss.
As far as the fight went, it was incredible! Lets be honest, Cotto was winning the fight up until the stoppage, he landed cleaner, harder shots throughout and boxed a smart tactical fight. The problem was that he simply could not hurt Margarito and in the end couldn't take Tony's shots, so everything good that he did counted for nothing. Margarito is a real force of nature and it is plain to see why he was so avoided for so long. To win a fight against a guy who is outboxing and outlanding you, simply because of your incredible chin and relentlessness is a massive achievement. Talk about skill vs will!
No-one should for a second write Cotto off. He remains an excellent combination of brutality and technique himself and would have beaten virtually any 'normal' opponent with the way he fought. He was just unlucky to run into a physical freak like Margarito, who outmatched him thoroughly in the brutality department, whilst Cotto himself was not quite, (but almost was) slick enough to nullify Tony's relentless attack.
We now have a GREAT situation at WW, with three guys in Cotto, Margarito and Williams who are far from perfect and who each may have the style to beat at least one of the others. I now want to see Williams Cotto as a matter of urgency, and I would feel very sad for Cotto were he to lose and go from being the anointed champ to being third best. I don't know who would actually win though because both guys are capable of mixing up their styles quite a bit and I think it would be a good fight.
The most compelling aspect of this of course is the potential for a three way rivalry, which is great for boxing and should go some way to removing this obsession with having a single P4P 'man' in each division that seems to have crept up on us. Rivalries and competitiveness makes for great fights and gets fighters remembered, so as fans we should be happy. We also have the possibility that Mayweather may return and instead of ONE big fight for him we now have a compelling reason for him to try and do what everyone always wanted, which was to take on all the main guys at WW and clean out the division.
So all in all, a surprise result that was awful for Miguel Cotto but should be great for boxing fans and for boxing in general.
I think cotto realy beat margarito in the boxing match but margarito won the fight, I think cotto is still an Elite fighter and is noone to be messed with, But you guys gotta remember, look back at ray robinson, willie pep ect, they all lost to guys, but thats because the fought all the fighters who deserved the shot, NO fighter can beat everyone, Everyone has a style they cant deal with, Miguel coto fought his best fight agaionst margarito, but margarito proved too stong, Props to marg on the win
Yeh i agree with Kostya...
Dont take to long off cuz thats how a few of them suffer
Get back straight in there and start of with a confidence bulider...
He took a knee to get a break. Cotto was gassed out in my opinion. And stayed up late in the fight off of pure heart. He took Margarito's punches as well as he could and held up a majority of the night.
It's just that the body shots tired him out. Plus add to the fact that he retreated for almost 3 minutes every single round. It was amazing. Watching it I kept changing my mind thinking he could actually pull this off. But I had an idea that he would gas out. Almost everyone else would have.
i agree with you guys cotto probably should take time off...
i also agree i think taylor coming back so soon to fight pavlik was a mistake...and it cost him...he did well...but not well enough...taylor nor cotto should get too upset about their losses...
taylor for one fought the first fight near perfect...all he did wrong was get over excited when he put pavlik down and he wore himself out and pavlik capitalized...
cotto out boxed margarito for most of the fight but he laid on the ropes and traded with margarito more than he should have and it cost him in the 11th.
im still not 100% sure why cotto took the knee im sure he was hurting a little bit but im not 100% sure why...same with judah...he took a knee against cotto but im not sure if it was the blood in his eye or what.
if cotto and margarito do rematch i think they should both fight someone else fight...probably a rematch of williams for margarito and cotto should probably take a fight against someone good but just not sure who...maybe against a welterweight he hasnt fought yet.
i think it would be amazing if it were a ppv and they both fought on the card as co-features...that would be a great ppv...
I honestly think Cotto needs to take off the rest of the year. He needs to be mentally fresh. I know he'll heal physically he's a tough guy. But he needs to recover mentally because it's his first loss and it was a KO loss. Don't jump back in there so soon like Taylor did with Pavlik just to prove you aren't scared.
GREAT post
Great fight.
Cotto gets props for takin the fight and doin all he could do.
Tony gets props for givin up his IBF strap to get the fight and winnin decisvely.
Cotto should take some time off to heal and think, then come back against one of the top contenders (just not a puncher) to rebuild himself.
Tony's gotta face Williams again.
yeah it was heartbreaking to see cotto's son crying, and I thought it was even aswell going into the 11th. you gotta five credit to both fighters for being the warriors that they are, props to margarito for winning, and it was better to see cotto take a knee and the trainer stop the fight instead of a ko.
