this is one guy i pray comes back as good as ever, but we all know that is almost never the case when it comes to guys who get, i hate to say it, beaten the way he did...especially when it happens to a guy that has the reputation as a destroyer like cotto does.
anyway, assess cotto's loss tonight. do you think he'll ever be the same? i know it's a bit (well very) early to make a prediction like that. it's just that it was so damn shocking hearing the words cotto and knocked out spoken in the same breath.
how sad it would be if the next miguel cotto we witness carries himself and fights like a totally different man.
I do not believe he will recover from this. This was the kind of beatdown that fucks you up forever. He took unnecessary punches, and POWERFUL ones at that.
I wanted to see Cotto lose after he was such a dick to me, I said "good luck against Margarito" and he didn't even look at me, so I immediately wanted to see him lose, but even I was not happy with what I saw. I wouldn't wish a beating like that on ANYONE.
Cotto was undefeated and pretty much DESTROYED and badly beat up all of his previous opponents, so to have received a brutal dose of his own medicine in his first loss will more likely than not cause irreparable damage.
Im thinking if cotto takes time off, probably around a year or so, he will be fine. But i have a feeling he will feel the need to prove to everyone that hes still a destroyer and get in there too son and completely doubt himself everytime someone doesnt go down in the first 5 rounds. Worst case scenario, we are now looking at a future "Mike Tyson". But hopefully he takes time off and heals mental and physical wounds. Every Cotto fan will say that im a bandwagon Marg fan for saying this but, an out of his prime Mosley took it to him and he pulled a Delahoya , Margs would put him on his ass. And i was right.
i don't mean to be a dick, but i'm about to sound like one...i apologize before hand but i'm just venting a bit as of right now.
i could care less if malignaggi was ever the same again after cotto and ngoudjo. i could care less if lacy was the same after calzaghe. but cotto?? we NEED this man in our sport for god's sake. i dunno what it is, maybe it was the way he carried himself, the way he fought, the way he acted like a silent badass which is what i've always idolized in movies since i was a kid, or the fact that he was one of the guys i was able to actually follow the career of (as opposed to seeing a fighters big recent fights and youtube the rest of them), but i felt awful seeing cotto being pummeled like that in the end. i'm filipino and i don't even think i'd feel as bad if i saw manny crumble like that and i'm being real.
again, i'm sorry for making myself sound selfish and inhumane towards the lives and well being of other brave men, but fuck i'm just pissed right now, and these are just words.
Imagine how WE felt as puertorricans. God, seeing Cotto's unemotional face so many times before, and after the first knockdown and the camera showing his facial expression and the crimson mask was absolutely heart-wrenching. A cloud of depression falls upon Puerto Rico tonight and with that, a silent and sad ending to a nevertheless boxing classic.
He should be fine as long as he does not fight against physically superior fighters. IMO Margarito was too big and strong for Cotto.
personally, he probably smokes the rest of the 147lb division with the possible exception of money may...now that's IF he's still the same person after tonight.

It's hard to say how he will react to this loss physically and mentally, I think he'll recover but it'll take some time to do so, we won't really know until he gets back into the ring.
I agree that it is a danger. He did take one hell of a beating and those are the kind of beatings that can have a permanent type effect.
I also think a lot of people need to come to the realisation that Cotto is not as good as everyone thought he was.
