Excerpt from an article I was reading. I disagree only on the point that Cotto has one punch KO power. Yes he has made people take knees and standing eight counts but he's never closed the show on a one shot deal. Discuss.
On one side we have Antonio Margarito, arguably the most feared Welterweight in the last five years and a beloved Mexican fighter. There has been a rumor for the last couple of years that Floyd Mayweather and Shane Mosley turned down multi-million dollar fights with him.
His fighting style is very much like the famed Mexican fighter Julio Cesar Chavez in that he is relentless and is willing to take your punches in order to give you his. Although a loss to Paul Williams last year slowed his chances at Cotto's title, he has since ripped through two other fighters to get here.
The Tijuana Tornado will stop at nothing to become the undisputed Welterweight champion and Saturday will be his chance to do not only that, but also to become a Mexican fight fan God.
On the other side of the ring we have the soft spoken Miguel Cotto. Although he is a man of few words, his hands do all the talking in the ring. He is the perfect fighter, in that he has one punch KO power, and the skill and speed of the top boxers in the world.
With this fight Cotto has the chance to become the only top fighter to take on the most feared fighter in the world, surpassing future hall of famer Felix Trinidad as the best boxer to come out of Puerto Rico. He also creates the possibility of fighting some of today's money making legends, like Ricky Hatton, Oscar De La Hoya, and the semi-retired Floyd Mayweather.
This fight is the kind we'll all talk about for months—not because of how disappointed we were, but because it was so great. I for one am hoping that Cotto vs. Margarito can save boxing. But if it can't, at least it'll be fun to watch.
Most great body punchers, like Chavez and Duran, weren't big one punch guys. They broke them down through accumulations and attrition.
I agree.
I loved what Jim Lampley said about Cotto during the Gomez fight.
He not only beats you, he beats you up.
Fighters like Chavez and Duran didn't go head hunting in order to end the fight quickly. They wanted to punish you for the entire 12/15 rounds and with that mentality, fighters would physically break down from the pressure that was placed on them.
He has never had one punch knockout power. It is the amount of clean punches that he can produce that reflects his impressive KO percentage.

Yeah, you guys are all defending Cotto by saying his slow beatings still get the job done, but the truth of the matter is, if he had that one punch power and knocked his opponents out in brutal fashion (like WLAD OWNES would put it) he would already be well known to the general public and a fight with Mayweather would already have been made. Plain and simple, Cotto is boring.:boxing:
kill yourself .. that or don't post your garbage opinion again.
just appreciate his pinpoint liver left hook body shot, which is currently the best in the business right now. it's the thing of beauty. i try to mimic it. his technique, concentration and power distribution result in a tremendous body punch...
I've tried to land that left when sparring with my brother in law. Never get the result I want though. I want him to instantly take a knee one day. I know it hurts him. He usually readjusts his hands right afterwards which is a dead give away. Anytime he's hurt he resets his shit like clock work.
yeah cotto doesnt have that one punch KO power. which sucks for his opponents.
Good point, some of these poor fuckers probably wish they would have been Koed before having to go 8-12 rounds with him.....Paulie and that other Italian guy forgot his name got beaten up good.

Exactly. They get beat up to the point a man who had never been knocked down... goes down with a jab.
I agree, Cotto has never shown 1 punch KO power....at least not against top level fighters. Although a solid left to the body if landed in the right spot can drop any fighter.....He does have that tool but I'm sure Margy will be prepared for it and likely be able to aviod being stopped by it. Cottos speed and improved boxing skill is gonna win this fight for him.
