Roy utilized a new Winky type style defense against Tito and it worked pretty well for him, but Tito is really a one dimensional fighter who is front feet heavy which keeps him off balance a lot of times. Calzaghe is really versatile and has enormous punch output. I'm not too sure how the Winky type defense is gonna work against Calzaghe, because Calzaghe would be throwing bombs to penetrate Jones' defense. Roy is my favorite fighter, and I wanna see him win, but he has a tough test ahead of him. I would have no doubt in my mind that a prime Roy would beat Calzaghe, but the older Roy I'm not sure. He still has fast hands, but his punch output is greatly diminished and he doesn't have the reflexes to avoid shots like he had in his prime. Roy can win if he can hit Calzaghe with notable harder shots during each round vs Calzaghe's pitty pat volume punches. I think it shold be a good fight if Roy brings it, cause we know Calzaghe will bring it. I think in the end, Roy will dig deep down inside and pull out a unanimous decision victory with a virtuoso performance for the ages that will cement his legacy forever.
And NEW........
It makes sense to hold a tight guard against a flurry fighter like Joe C. Roy ain't quick enough anymore to try to dodge punches from a fast handed fighter like him.
if he adopts the Trinidad D against Calzaghe it will be a mistake that is the type of thing that Calz loves taking advantage of he will rat a tat tat the gloves finish and finish on a left hook to the body and steal rounds or even force a stoppage
if u look at highlight reel of Calzaghe career that is a feature of it him overwhelming peopke with flurries of slaps on the gloves and getting the referee to step in Manfredo ,Sobot etc
The only thing we as boxing fans can worry about is another manfreddo situation. Where calzaghe was throwing out fast volumising punches which were doing no damage and missing at a rate of 90 %. Creating the effect that manfreddo was seriously hurting when infact he was completely fine .
I have my own opinion, and just becasue im from the uk doesnt mean im going to big every uk boxer up like the rets of you. I wont deny calzaghe is good, but hes not a p4p great and jones can definatley take him out. The only prospect right now from the uk is david haey who thanks to his ever growing head, is now doing stupid things like calling out heavyweight champions

As for the Manfedo comment, this is BOXING not lets-see-how-long-i-can-be-a-standing-punchbag-for! If your being hit you need to move or hit back, if they wern't hurting him why didnt he punch back, surely he'd take a few SLAPS to the face just put the hurt on an off balance Calzaghe as he wings away but he didnt he stood there....thus the fight was stopped.
There is no way the Roy Jones of today would knock out Calzaghe he barely put a dent in Tito. Calzaghe has been in with fresher hard hitters than the current RJJ. I thinks it's Roy that will really notice the step up in opposition not the other way around!
jones looks so happy in the second video where hes on the deck. Hes just like smilling and dreaming about fighting his cockrels.
but serious jones is back in shape . hes gonna knock out joe calslappers
I see it as Roy throwin the guard up. Simple as that. Forearms coverin his fronts. Whether it's on the ropes or center of the ring, I don't think it'll be a smart thing to do against Joe.
It could work for him against Calzaghe but it all depends on how fast he can let his hands go now.
Dude...
Jones use to live in the Matrix for defense, just like Acelino Freitas.
They'd TEASE their opponents to hit their chins, they'd put their glvoes down, stick their chins out and use their reflexes to get out of the way and counter. Simple bait and catch.
lol Jones can't do that anymore. Just look at the Johnson fight. It doesn't only have to do with fatigue, it has to do with the fact once Jones feels like he's bein touched too much, he'll go straight to that defense of throwin his guard up. His natural and comfortable way of dealing with punches is to tuck his arms in and throw up that forearm guard. Now against Joe...I don't like that.
I think right now the fight is dead even. I can't pick a solid winner cause I can see Joe takin this just as easily as I can see Roy takin it.
I know he can't do that anymore but he didn't adopt the Winky defense until the Hanshaw fight, he was still holding his hands low up until the Ajamu, he still does it now just nowhere near as much as he used to.
What you're describing is covering up along the ropes, not the turtle shell/Winky defense that he used against Trinidad and to a lesser extent Hanshaw.
I don't see this fight as being even at all, Calzaghe has to be the favorite, Jones hasn't don't anything lately to convince me otherwise.
It got him rocked in the Tarver fights. Sittin on the ropes with his forearms up, then came that hook around that forearm guard. Just like that it was over.
That's covering up along the ropes, look at reed's post, he was fatigued so he kept his arms up along the ropes, you didn't see him have hands high and elbows tucked in the middle of the ring like he did against Trinidad against Tarver, Johnson or Ajamu.
I remember his left hand being down with his right hand up to protect against the left hook from Tarver but the punch slipped in and caught him.

Calzaghe is not capable of knocking out roy jones. I hate all this :
" roy jones does not have a great chin " " jones has a glass chin "
Ok the Jones got knocked out by tarver. To clear afew things up. Tarver is a very hard hitter. any one who disagrees doesnt know fuck all about boxing or is looking for a pointless argument. Second of all, if you have actauly seen the clip, its a very un lucky punch. It didnt happen in a flurry , it happen when tarver pushes jones right into the corner and jones is caught of balance.
He then makes big mistake of taking on glen johnson, an even harder hitter straight after the fight where his chine was cracked. Respect his attitude and heart, but should of given it a rest before taking on another hard opponent after and injury like that. Boom he got clipped in the bottom of the jaw again.
Since then he defends with his new turtle style defence, as he knows fine well hes not got the legs he had in the 90's. His new style works well for him and hes stil got supreme hand speed and hand power. Very capable of knockign out calzaghe if he is in range.

Thank god the match is being held in america, becuase if it was in wales that would most likly happen when hes in his turtle defence. Calzaghe throwing alot of punches , not hurting and the fight getting stopped.
Im hoping for a battle in september. Im scotish , not a biast " yank " as you call them. Jones wasn't off balance when he got caught, he didn't see the shot coming and Tarver did have his head down so it did have an element of luck but he wasn't off balance, he missed a shot and was loading up on another when Tarver caught him.
Johnson isn't a harder hitter than Tarver, he isn't a very hard puncher really, he wears an opponent down more so than knocking out his opponents with one shot and the shot he landed on Jones was high on the head not on the chin and the Johnson fight was supposed to be a comeback/tune up fight for a third fight with Tarver, people didn't consider Johnson to be a very tough fight at all, which turned out to be wrong.
He didn't adopt the turtle shell defense right away, he was still keeping his hands low against Tarver in their third fight which led to him getting hurt badly again by a right hook, luckily for him Tarver punched himself out, even against Ajamu, he still had his hands low, he started adopting the turtle shell in the Hanshaw fight but made it a part of his style in the Trinidad fight.

He used that sucky defense cos he no longer has the speed and legs to avoid punches that made him great.
He's been usin since the Tarver fights...lol thats how he got knocked out.
He does it cause he's old, he can't move in the Matrix like he use to. But I don't think Calzaghe's punch would shake that defense up. But I also thought Hopkins would lay out Joe. I thought Bernard would have laid him out with that right hand later in the fight as oppose to soo early in the fight.
So for all I know, lol Joe KO's Roy. Roy doesn't exactly have a great chin, and he looks even worse when he fatigues. Joe usually gets stronger with those flurrys the later the fight gets.
Maybe Roy gets stopped on the ropes? I don't know.
He didnt employ the new "Winky" style defense until The Anthony Hanshaw fight.
In the Tarver fights, he went back on the ropes because of fatigue, and when you are fatigued your not using head and lateral movement for defense, your putting your hands up like he did.
Against Hanshaw and Trinidad, he actually used his hands up, as a style and tecnique instead of just trying to cover up... Trinidad was much better than hanshaw, and Roys new style showed a lot of improvement even with a better opponent.
The question is, whether he can once again look better against a better opponent in Calzaghe. I for one, feel much more comfortable that a 39 year old Roy uses his still in tact hand eye coordination to block punches, rather than use his dulled reflexes with lateral and head movement for defense.
Change, what has slipped in your game, and keep what you still have. He still has his handspeed power and accuracy, and he still uses it. His reflexes have slowed, and hes gotten caught lately... Hes learned this, and he has seemed to fix the problem as much as he can.
Contrary to popular belief I think this fight benefits Roy on the ropes. Main reason being is if Joe has one major advantage over Roy it's his fresher legs. I believe in the center of the ring, Joe will do better with in and out movement, that Im not sure Roy can keep up with. On the ropes, Roy takes legs out of the equation, and now its whose got more skill with their hands ,and thats when I feel more confident in Roy.
Roy's countering abilities and handspeed WILL dampen Joe's workrate. When you have a guy that can hit you in the face, faster than anyone youve ever faced... and he can do it, when you try to hit him.... You think out your moves a little more, and don't just start flurrying.
In my view, Roy hopes Joe comes in flurrying away... I definitely agree.

He didn't use the Winky type defense until Trinidad although I saw glimpses of it against Hanshaw, against Tarver, Johnson and Ajamu he was still keeping his hands low.
It will be a lot different than the Trinidad fight becuase he is in with a better(at that stage), fresher, buiser, bigger and more skilled fighter in Calzaghe and would be out worked. He can't not try to match Calzaghe work rate, but to try do something to offset it. Probably by using the ring and play the part of the counter puncher and throwing straight punches.
