Boxingtalk has been hearing serious rumblings from various sources claiming that the Manny Pacquaio-David Diaz PPV telecast generated an abyssmal amount of buys believed to be less than 200,000. No official announcement has been made by HBO regarding the numbers and this could be the reason why.
Where's the link it did 250,000k again?
op Rank promoter Bob Arum told me the other day the Manny Pacquiao-David Diaz lightweight title bout did between 225,000 and 250,000 buys on HBO PPV. To put it nicely, Arum is ever the optimist. I asked industry folks who are far less prone to exaggeration than Arum and was told that the fight will be lucky to crack 200,000. Lucky. It just goes to show you that no matter how great Pacquiao is, without a known foil he can't do serious business on his own.
Pacquiao's pay-per-view fights with more established stars Erik Morales (a trilogy), Juan Manuel Marquez and Marco Antonio Barrera all did excellent business. But Diaz, as likeable as he is, was a huge underdog and had never been on HBO before being put into a major pay-per-view main event. Despite tireless efforts promoting the fight, doing interviews and making public appearances, Diaz was essentially an unknown, even though he held a title.
Now, Arum is talking up a November pay-per-view fight between Pacquiao and junior lightweight Edwin Valero, who is just as unknown as Diaz. Valero, who is from Venezuela and based in Japan, has appeared once on U.S. television (in a small pay-per-view in December). He does not speak English, so he won't come close to being able to approach Diaz's media relations effort and he has no particular fan base in America. If Arum goes through with his plans for Pacquiao-Valero, especially with such a glut of pay-per-view events on the fall schedule, the fight will be lucky to crack 150,000 buys. Lucky.
Per Dan Rafeal
The American media doesn't pay enough attention to non-American fighters, that's the reason for the low PPV revenue.
If the media paid attention to Pacman the way they rode Floyd's nuts, they would have sold the fight to the public.
I do tend to agree with this statement, no such much in Flloyd's case, but I tend to agree.
The 3k fight was held in Philippines so its not HBO PPV. Even though he alrady fought JMM and MAB, its the Morales fight that he really got popular. Even though he is known already before Morales fight, thats when the Pac explosion started(just my opinion).
Larios fight, i believed he was a free agent at that time, contrac eneded with Gary Shaw. I believed he promoted it along with a major Philippine network.
Solis fight, remember there was still the issue on Pac signing both with Golden Boy and Top Rank.
I do agree with you that the Diaz fight should have been on regular HBO. But if JCC jr. can get a PPV event, then Pac and his promoter can do it too.
Chavez is making only a fraction of what Pacquiao is, maybe 10-20% as much. That's why Top Rank (the promoter for both fighters) still does ok with only 70,000 buys.
Barrera-fana = 50k
Marquez - Barrera 225k
Marquez fighting David Diaz willl never reach 200k.. Marquez has little to do with it.. It's the history of the fight the makes it interesting not Marquez himself.. His fight with Juarez drew 1000+ crowd instead of 10000 capacity stadium.. His PPV bout with Juarez got cancelled at MGM Grand because only 500 people bought the tickets and HBO reject it and showtime got the knots.
Exactly. I could not have said it better myself.
The reason JMM, MAB, and EM are draws is because there are almost 30 million Mexican, Mexican-Americans in the US.
For Pac, there are ony 2 mill Pinoys in the US.
Pacmans numbers without Morales/Barrera/Marquez are generally dismal. infact, solis, 3kbattery, Larios werent even promo'd by HBO ppv. This Diaz fight is why, the fact is, i dont blame pacman for this being on PPV, i blame fucking HBO, this shit should have been on TV for free.

When bars have a ppv, they pay a fee based on how many seats are in the joint. I have no idea how that is extrapolated into the ppv numbers. They sure aren't paying $50 per chair though......
I know that they are charging enough so that very few bars in Los Angeles ever show PPV's anymore. As far as I have to drive now to see them it makes more sense for me to order them at home. I spoke to the manager of a large local bar in Hollywood and he told me it wasn't cost effective to order them anymore.
Well it's only fair to post this after saying that Marquez-Barrera did less then Pacquiao-Diaz and well...it didn't
Pac-Solis did better than MAB-JMM, according to a past issue of the Ring mag.
Blame the bars and 500 people gathering to watch the fight on one screen.

no offense but i dont see why people are think 200K is too low of a number for PPV buys for the fight.
No offense to Diaz but every dedicated/educated boxing fan knows this was basically a fight made for pacquiao to:
A) Move up in weightclass against not THEE best opponent in the division but certainly not the worse.
B) To earn another ABC title.
Thats basically what this fight was...
i didnt order the PPV or even watch a live stream because i knew the result before the opening bell...
this wasnt a highly anticipated fight in general...
no offense...props to both fighters...world class talent...but it just wasnt the fight people really wanted to see.
People wanted to see hatton v. pacquiao...or even Pacquiao v. Marquez again...
Or even pacquiao v. a top fighter in that division...like THEE lineal champion...not a simple title holder.
this does go to show (in my opinion) that one fighter cant always sell the tickets on his own.
who is the girl in your avatar? LOL.
I was thinking it would be really creepy if it was someone else's kid not from your family or anything, just some random baby picture.
HA HA HA.
ha ha ha
isn't she cute?
her name is jintaya. she's sooooo chubby......
We cannot deny that Pacquiao is the cashcow! He is obviously paid more than $10M in his last 6-7 fights. Whether Pacquiao is a draw or not, it doesn't matter to him, it's already a bonus for him to earn from all those PPVs, not to the fans.
The truth is: anybody pitted against Pacquiao can receive more than what he previously earned in his last fight!
As more and more credible fighters gun for the top dog whos vunerable (pacman) you will see more buisness talk among the fans, as it becomes almost impossible to explain why someone isnt fighting someone without playing a numbers game.
very true.
manny is the cashcow in the division.
if he fights this guy over this guy this fan will say something. reverse it and the other guy's fan will say something.
i just hate getting involved in the who draws more and who's more popular debate.
plus someone will say something derogatory so someone else will reply the same.
i'm guilty of it too sometimes but i don't like being involved in it.
sometimes a guy will just piss you off that you start mouthing off things that you don't believe yourself just to go against them.
so much talk about ppv numbers. manny fans/haters are starting to sound like floyd fans/haters.

if it didn't hit 200k that's not good.
250k is OK.

it was a good win for a belt for manny. let's see if manny can be a REAL champ at 135.
i'd rather talk about possible guzman , marquez , campbell , diaz , katsidis , casamayor , pacquiao matchups than ppv numbers. let arum and pacquiao's accountants worry about that.
i love manny and i hate marquez. it's a fan thing NOT a ppv thing. if you don't love/hate manny and love/hate marquez you're not a boxing fan.
we are about to see 6-7 fights this year involving the top 9-10 guys at 130 to 135. fuck the ppv numbers! i just can't wait to see how the fights turn out and who's fighting who next year......
