According to the New Haven website Chad Dawson has no intention of defending his WBC title against Adrian Diaconu in Romania. As you all know if Chad Dawson doesn't defend his belt against Diaconu he will be stripped of his WBC belt and Diaconu BECOMES THE NEW WBC LHW CHAMPION. Instead Dawson is trying to sign a deal with Antonio Tarver and Tarver's camp has said that he's ready to fight Dawson in October. Dawson has stated that he will only fight Diaconu in the U.S, not in Romania. I don't know too much about the politics of boxing, but can someone tell me about Gary Shaw? And why he only bidded 1.3mil compared to Gankor promotions 1.8mil? What do you guys think about this move by Dawson? Handing the WBC belt to Diaconu just to fight Tarver? I think Dawson is clearly ducking Diaconu and Dawson should be a man and go to Romania and defend his belt like a true champion should do. Of course this isn't official, just a rumor, and they may end up fighting after all. But their is a reason why this fight hasn't been finalized yet despite Diaconu's promoter winning the purse bid.
I actually hope Dawson gets stripped of the belt now, Gary shaw is taking a piss how can you not communicate with Diacanu's promoter? I bet Dawson is pissed Shaw didnt win the purse bid but that has nothing to do with Diaconu whose promoter has done everything by the book.
If team-Dawson promised Diaconu a shot after the Johnson fight they should be ashamed of themselves.
I agree why lobby the WBC then turn around and try to deny someone else a shot(A deserved one at that)? I say bin the belt if Tarver is 100% sure he wants to fight you but i think he (Dawson) just didnt want to go to Romania now.
I gurantee you Dawson is not ducking Diaconu at all. He is making smart decisions that would not only be better for him money wise, but it would also be a move that will get him more recognition in the boxing world. Think about it, Diaconu will get the WBC strap in Dawson vacates and defends it, which would make his name bigger. Dawson is going for Tarver's IBF strap and if he wins it, then he could unify against a CHAMPION instead of a contender so he will make more money and get more credit for that win.
Dawson was ready to fight Diaconu the first time. If he was ducking him or afraid for some reason, then he would have pulled out of the fight becuase there was only a few weeks left to go. He is chassing the big money fights becuase he has stated in many interviews that he wants recognition more than anything. I agree that he should fight Diaconu first, but i wouldn't mind him seeing him in with Taver beforehand. :fing02:

Actually Dawson has been pushing for a Tarver matchup for only a year. He wasn't noticed in the LHW division until he beat Adamek. But lets look at all the chances Dawson was given to fight his mandatory.
1.Last November the WBC gave Dawson an option to face his mandatory or a voluntary opponent before January 25. Diaconu was ready to face Dawson in January or February.
2.Dawson told the WBC that he wanted to fight Glen Johnson first. The WBC denied his request. He then had to go to Mexico and chat with the WBC President himself (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0ktn-jGkHo) to reverse his decision.
3.After extreme begging from Dawson, the WBC allowed him to fight Glen Johnson, but only if he agreed to fight Diaconu after his matchup with Johnson, which he did agree on.
Dawson was given an opportunity to fight Diaconu in January or February. Had he fought Diaconu during that time and won, he would of been free to fight Tarver or anyone else. So lets not talk about Tarver ducking anyone, when Dawson is CLEARLY ducking Diaconu.

It may be Gary Shaw, not Dawson, making this decision.
Just like Don King and Ahmed Ohner, Shaw doesn't have his fighters' best interests in mind.
I should have said TEAM-Dawson of course. The decision is likely not made by the fighter.

Hmmm... If Dawson made that commitment it's understandable that Diaconu is dissapointed. That Dawson now opts not to honor his promise is a disgrace. I'm afraid that we've seen such dishonest behaviour from many parties in the past and it sucks everytime. Maybe money is the name of the game, but boxing surely could need a few more honest and respectful ppl.
Dawson has been pushing for Tarver for almost 2 years now. Tarver's excuse for not fighting him last year was that Dawson is on the path of disaster and that he doesn't deserve a fight with him, which is complete and utter BS. If you want to unify light heavyweight, then why not fight the baddest young champion and prove yourself against him? He was cleary ducking Dawson. I would like Tarver if he did more fighting and less talking.

It's not official, it's just a rumor being spread around. Dawson isn't stripped of his title yet, but Dawson needs to make up his mind on whether he wants to fight Tarver or Diaconu. Since Diaconu seems to be a major roadblock on Dawson fighting other opponents, it would be wise for Dawson to get him out the way. Dawson has stated that he would only fight Diaconu in Canada or the U.S, not in Romania, which is why Dawson is stalling.
It depends on what type of money is on the table for a Tarver fight, But Dawson putting all his hope on tarver is kind of stupid. Tarver seem to hoping for a fight with RJJ.
Dawson should just fight Diaconu just to get the fight out of the way if tarver isnt signing rather than lose his belt
I find it pretty disapointing he's willing to fight him, but not in Romania, only in the US. What kinda of professional sportsmen are you when you want everything your way like that, I agree man, if your willing to fight him, and they won the bid to have it in Romania, go over there and fight him, jeez. Tarver's really talked up a fight with Dawson and it's clearly worked on the younger guy. Shame really.

So people are saying here and on other boxing forums that Dawson had until the end of Monday to sign for the fight, or be stripped.
But I can't find a news article saying he's been stripped of the WBC title.
Anybody know any more about this?

I dont think it's ducking. I think Dawson wants the big bucks and who can blame him? There's a lot more dough in fighting Tarver than Diaconu, and should Dawson get stripped so be it. He'll get the IBF version if he gets by Tarver and a fight with Diaconu in about a year would make a lot more financial sense from Dawsons viewpoint.
All that talk about ducking is somewhat tiresome. In the end the name of the game is money and career management. I cannot recall any blatant ducks having taken place in quite some time TBH.
I agree, Dawson should fight Tarver first and unify the titles against Diaconu sometime next year. That would make a lot more sense and he would make for money by doing that. If Diaconu were to get some good wins while Dawson is taking care of things with Tarver, then the fight could be a pretty big draw and the winner is undoubably the best light heavyweight IMO.
Well according to the Canadian posters Dawson has till midnight to decide if he's going to fight Diaconu or not. If he doesn't, his WBC belt will be stripped. I don't know if this is true or not, but that's what they said. But this is a good move by the WBC, Dawson just cannot stall for 90 days. And since his fight with Tarver is still in the works, Dawson will lose some drawing power if he's not carrying the WBC strap. Looks like I'm going to have to change my avatar if Dawson is no longer the WBC champion by tomorrow.
This is not good.
Dawson is not a household name by any means. He's simply known as being the WBC light heavyweight champion. If he vacates the title, WHO CARES about Chad Dawson? He's not even the real champ anyway because of his clear cut loss to Glen Johnson in April. The significance of a Dawson-Tarver fight is that is a step in the right direction towards unifying the light heavy division.
Calzaghe is going to retire soon, so the linear belt will most likely be vacated. The division is so close to having a universally recognized champion, so Dawson needs to fight his mandatory otherwise, he'll be stripped of the title and Dawson-Tarver solves nothing.
