I just watched this bitch last night, and was actually quite entertained... at least it entertained me more than Hamed-Kelley. I like these kind of high-paced chessmatches.
Anyway, this fight really was hell to score, which is okay for me, because I don't score.
BUT, I do want to know what the general mood on this fight was. Volume vs. power. You decide!
Oscar goes up 7 lbs and takes on Sweet P, who is universally recognized as one of the best in the world. No tuneup for Oscar, no sharmba mitchell tune ups, just went in and fought the man in his first fight at that weight. Give the man his props for taking on all the toughest fights , without fear of losing or having a L on his record. No rematches with some fighters, but then again , what other fighter was taking these guys on, who stepped up to fight the guys Oscar did???
I feel alot of people feel sorry for Sweet P, make excuses like he was old and he was a coke head.........to make up for the Chavez fiasco.
Whitaker was still the man at Ww, had not really lost a fight in his whole career and was widely respected. It should come as no surprise that Oscar had problems with the defensive wiz Whitaker.
that knockdown was one of those iffy ones that could have gone either way and I wouldnt have cared.
I had it 113-113. you really had to keep an eye on what punches were landing and which ones werent. it couldve gone either way scoring wise.
It's about 5 minutes in. De La Hoya jumps in at Whitaker. Whitaker hits De La Hoya's shoulder when DLH is off balance, but he wasn't down yet. Then Whitaker lands a hook on the inside that makes DLH go down, even if DLH was off balance (which he was), Whitaker hit DLH with a punch that caused him to go down. That counts as a knockdown.
look at their feet.....thats like when winky got credited with knocking down quartey....
Well he knocked Oscar down and popped him with the right jab constantly.
Thats all Whitaker managed to do, he Kd Oscar while poping him him constantly missing while Oscar was attacking and hitting Pea while Pea was runnining

Why was it bullshit? Oscar got caught switching over to southpaw and Whitaker cleanly caught him.
The point deduction for the accidental headbutt was fucking stupid though.
dude it was not a knockdown though come on
the knockdown was bullshit and that was levelled up by a point deduction which was also bullshit

De La Hoya won that fight without a doubt. Whitaker did nothing the whole fight but get punches thrown at him.

I had it 114-112 for Oscar. I felt the point reduction for Whitaker was fucking stupid though.
I also might be in minority here, but I think he beat Quartey too....I had it 114-113 for Oscar, with him taking rounds 9-12. It was pretty much all Quartey until then. 6-2 quartey after round 8, then Oscar won the other rounds.
The Ring had it like this at the end of 1996:
1996
Roy Jones Jr.
Oscar De La Hoya
Pernell Whitaker
Felix Trinidad
Ricardo Lopez
Junior Jones
Kostya Tszyu
Terry Norris
Evander Holyfield
Mark Johnson
I don't know what it was exactly before Whitaker-DLH. Jones had been DQ'd against Griffin and Whitaker struggled pretty bad against Hurtado.
There might've been some slight changes but I doubt they dropped Whitaker that much despite the tough bout.
He also struggled with Rivera in two fights, and had been abusing drugs and alcohol well before the De La Hoya fight. He was a faded fighter, but a tough test all the same.
Ring Generalship won this fight for Sweetpea. He made Oscar look lost and amatuerish. The Hopkins/Calzaghe fight was kind of similiar. Sweetpea got the early knockdown, Hopkins got the early knockdown against Calzaghe as well, but lost on the scorecards.
but he did'nt did he when u use ring generalship u have to make it clear to the judges what u are doing Whitaker fought like he did'nt wanna lose but not like he wanted to win
a good example of ring generalship is how Griffin beat Toney
SweetPea Won that fight

yep.....and he was ranked 1 or 2 in most p4p rankings before fighting Oscar....
