'The biggest downer is that the sport is losing its most skilled practitioner. Mayweather was the best prizefighter around. Period. He wasn’t nearly as great as he thinks he was—in the pantheon of classical boxers you don’t have to go back any farther than Pernell Whitaker to find someone better—but he was the best of his era.'
-William Dettloff.
First of all, what do you think of the comment, in general and his overall opinion of Mayweathers career? And what do you think of him saying that Whitaker is better than Mayweather?
This argument may have come up, but I don't care.
Vote. Discuss.
iM NOT TALKING ACCOMPLISHMENTS....
Im saying put Floydnext to sweet pea and with a naked eye...Floyd is a better fighter thensweet pea.
Nah, I don't see that. And that isn't what this thread was about anyway.
It was about who was the better fighter, not who wins.
Regardless, I think at 135, it's a VERY close fight. I don't care who he beat or how he beat them at 135, Mayweather didn't fight Whitaker at 135 and it's a close fight.
Also, along with me, Sin City, slicksouthpaw16 and blackirish137 all voted for Whitaker. Are these names that have hatred for Mayweather? I certainly don't. He's an INCREDIBLY GREAT fighter, I'd never deny that.
Thread Stealer, warp1432, SkillsPayBills, Black Jesus and El Dominicano all went with too hard to call. It's clearly NOT that clear. Those are guys that have never really BAD MOUTHED Mayweather.
(I'm pretty sure the names I mentioned have no hatred for Mayweather)
If someone just happens to like Whitaker better, that's the way it is. Doesn't mean they are discrediting him.
I like both fighters...because they are kinda the same..both fast..both slick..both defensive guys first......
Sweet Pea is a legend an all time great fighter...no doubt.
But when you put both guys next to each other...Floyd should clearly be the BETTER fighter to any one who's not biased...but hey here we are.
Why should it be clearer?
He fought bigger fighters, in their primes and beat them, or should have beat them
Both were p4p number one at one point, bth had incredible skills and Whitaker though not a champion in as many different divisions, chased big fights to other divisions, sometimes passed his prime to do it and had success.
He got robbed in his Chavez and De La Hoya fights, by a lot of peoples accounts, so I don't take those two into anything more than good performances by Whitaker.
Both were fast, both were defensive (though Whitaker was funner to watch while being defensive), both had decent power for guys who aren't looked at as power punchers, both had solid enough beards and both fought the best they could, for the most part.
To say it's clear FOR EITHER, is biased.
Whitaker was 1 of the greatest fighters I have ever seen defensively. But he still got hit and caught with punches he shouldn't have had got caught with. Also Whitaker simply out boxed u, he really had no power and wasn't a better body puncher than Floyd. Just overall, Floyd is the better fighter. I think whitaker was quicker on his feet but he also put himself out of position to punch back and was only able to dodge then reset. Floyd is hardly never out of position to attack and he is 1 of the best at coming from defense to offense in 1 move. Floyd had the better jab at the smaller weights and just looked more like a virtuoso than Whitaker. Very rarely have ever seen Floyd not in control, but I've seen Whitaker struggle with Trinidad (later in his career though), Buddy Mcgirt, and Roger Mayweather. They both are great fighters and Floyd definitely used some of Whitaker's blueprint as well. But at the ned of the day skill for skill, Floyd edges him out.
They had the weigh in 72 hours BEFORE fight time. This is the only reason he looked fresh, he had almost half a week to re-hydrate. By fight time he was close to 170 pounds.....
Since they both agreed to the weigh in time, he then still made 150 pounds. So, it still doesn't lead me to believe that he couldn't make 147.
I'm sure there are some people who are voting for Whitaker simply because they don't like Mayweather but then again there are a lot of people who are voting for Mayweather without having ever seen Whitaker fight so I guess that evens it out...
Very fair, to assume the pol is gonna be so perfect that everyone votes knowing everything about both, and without any other agenda is ridiculous.
people are voting for Whitaker:ugh::nonono:
Probably Mayweather haters

Boxing masterclass.
Another display of boxing by Whitaker.
Whitaker wasn't a puncher but he could knock a man out when he needed to.
The best example of this was when an aging Whitaker fought Diosbelys Hurtado.
Pernell Whitaker vs Floyd Mayweather
Speed: Mayweather
Power: Pernell Whitaker
Defense: Draw
Better Body Puncher: Whitaker
Counter Punching: Draw
Reach: Ofcourse Mayweather, but Pernell would just move side to side and counter
Smarts: The same.
Jab: Mayweather had a slightly better Jab
This is to hard to call
Mayweather didnt have much use of the jab since he left his father earlier in his career, Whitaker clearly had better use of the jab. Also, Mayweather punches considerably harder than Whitaker and scored plenty much more knockouts against the better line of fighters. Everything else on your list i pretty much agree with.
he is not better then floyd. floyd was quicker, stronger and smarter.
Quicker? Maybe.
Stronger? Yeah.
Smarter? Lmao.

His stamina did look much better against Forbes which surprised me but that could also be because GBP scheduled the weigh in earlier than usual to give DLH more time to rehydrate.
His stamina did surprise me though.

I think it's much harder for him at this point, but I do think he makes it. Might drain him, but he's always had a decent beard and was able to deal with that.
The stamina is what gets most effected by draining yourself. And he's had problems with that anyway. Though, at 150, he looked very fresh.

I think he can make it but it could drain him, he had trouble making 147 against Tito, as you know, it gets harder to cut weight as you get older.

I also heard reports that he was actually a pound under. I don't remember from where, so excluding that. I still think he makes 147 is if gives himself time to do it, and goes in with the mindset of making it.

There were some reports that he didn't make 150, he was a pound over on his first try I think, I'm not sure if they weighed him again.

Then why wasnt the Forbes fight at 147???
Why should he do anything that gives a lesser opponent more of a chance?
Floyd can make 140, he fought Hatton at 147, didn't he?
Oscar has MILLIONS on the line for 147. He'll lose the extra 3 pounds.
And Jim (lol.), yes the fight was at a catch-weight of 150. I doubt he struggles with thsoe three pounds.

mayweather would beat Whitaker, so I pick mayweather
Everyone seems to feel obliged to hate on mayweather because he retired and ducked cotto, but after watching mayweather vs corrales you can bet Pernell would lose to mayweather no doubt.
Not true, Whitaker is way better than Corrales, RIP. Mayweather beating Whitaker is definitely possible but it's not a foregone conclusion.

Of course, coulnd't just be that Pernell Whitaker is one of the best boxers to ever lace up gloves or anything along those lines.
He was...but he wasnt 147 either.
