Oscar De La Hoya’s three-fight exodus plan has hit some major roadblocks this week. Just days after learning that his proposed rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr. was scrapped due to Mayweather’s retirement, De La Hoya received another blow when 140-pound star Ricky Hatton rejected a September bout.
With Mayweather and Hatton out, MaxBoxing.com has learned that southpaw Winky Wright is being considered as De La Hoya’s next opponent. Sources close to the situation confirmed that representatives from both camps have had loose, informal discussions regarding a bout to be contested at 154 pounds.
From a tactical standpoint, De La Hoya-Wright would be intriguing. Despite the penchant for abandoning his effective jab, De La Hoya is a complete fighter with plenty of tools. His prowess would be tested by Wright, a slick, defensive-oriented boxer. If the bout were agreed upon, a calculated, methodical fight would surely follow. For boxing purists, a De La Hoya-Wright clash would be a fine display of technical skill and execution.
The biggest hurdle for a De La Hoya-Wright bout will undoubtedly be the financial arrangements. Given the history behind both fighters, a lucrative agreement would be required. It also remains to be seen whether or not a television network would have interest in funding the fight. Nevertheless, the source offered that there is a “strong possibility” that the fight will happen.
De La Hoya, 3-3 in his last six fights, reportedly has interest in fighting the winner of the July 26 welterweight title fight between Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito. Wright, inactive since his loss to Bernard Hopkins last July, has been offered several fights over the past year but has yet to find a suitable opponent. His last win came over Ike Quartey in December of 2006.
Who do you think will win?
It is an interesting matchup but Winky's style would give DLH a lot of trouble. Winky by decision if it happens.

This would be a better fight then people anticipate, Oscar is clever and doesnt just get his ass whooped he always puts up a fight.. And Winky's D is probley the best in the game, but in this fight i see him tryin to do something different and slugging with the smaller ODLH.. which makes the fight close and up for grabs ill take Winky though by UD!
wright said after the hopkins fight that he wants to move all the way down to 154 pounds....so that's what he wants
whether he can make it, only his body knows that. there hasnt been any history of him struggling to make weight so maybe he'll have another fight there
oscar will not fight wright at catch weight, oscar is money, and he's the boss, and if winky wants to fight, then he'll do everything that'll be put into contract
Floyd Mayweather sr. just said that Winky would be to tough and big for Oscar to face. Can Winky even make 154 anymore? I doubt it.
I was wondering about that too.
