I thought the Versus commentators, Nick Charles and Wally Matthews, didn't do a very good job today.
Nick Charles was by far the worst of the two. He was unfairly negative about Hatton, and with almost every comment, he sounded like he doesn't like Ricky.
They are supposed to create interest in the people watching. Charles going on, over and over again, about how Lazcano was coming off a year of inactivity sounded like he was trying to lower the level of excitement and discredit Ricky's win!
Yet earlier, he had been quite positive about Paulie Malignaggi.
At the start i didn't like how they were breaking the fight down and were very negative about Hatton.
Then they settled down and some of the analysis was pretty good IMO - a nice change but they could work on their charisma a little, they weren't the most memorable duo. The second commentator (Charles I think?) seemed to know his boxing, at least from my limited perspective.
I watched that round 10 debacle on both the British and American broadcasts and it's astonishing the difference. The British commentary was saying "I don't know what is holding Lazcan up, he's on wobbly legs, he should be thankful for the break!" and the American commentary was all but suggesting that the referee was holding Hatton up.

Get over it Tunney.
Here's the British version of the full Hatton vs. Lazcano fight. These guys are much better than those clowns at Versus:

I wish we could bring these British commentators over to North America, and have them replace Charles and Matthews.

I thought they didnt have any business commentating.
Not just in that fight but even in other versus broadcasts.
I think they are on the lower end of all commentators.
Seriously...they are extremely biased and can score fights well...
i think commentators job is to be honest, create viewer interest, explain whats going on...
not to be biased towards certain fighters or talk badly about either fighter...
They should talk about the fight as it is...not what they THINK it should be...its fine to give opinions from time to time but majority of their broadcast was opinions.
But seeing how highly rated Hatton is in England and how much the English fans love him could there be a Ref. who was not bias in his favor? Half if not most of those fans believe a bias Ref. made Ricky go head first into a ring post Vs. Mayweather.
Maybe it's just me being English, but it annoyed me when this exchange took place in the very first round:
Crap commentator 1: I guarantee this referee was carefully chosen as a Ricky Hatton ref
Crap commentator 2: Well he's from England, enough said there
I mean wtf? It's the first round.... Seeing what happend in the tenth round, their may have been a little more then right. I know Hatton had nothing to do with the shoe lace but he was saved there by the Ref.
I found it more ridicioulous (horrible spelling I know) that they kept trying to blame Paulie's hair as the main reason why he looked like shit. Let's not even mention how good Ndou looked.
They didn't focus on what Ndou was doing, but what Paulie was doing wrong. Give Ndou credit for putting up a good fight. They were awful
They really did hit it home about Paulie's hair though. It was unprofessional.
I don't think Paulie was very serious about this fight. How can you take a guy like Lovemore N'dou serious the dude is a clown
they were horrendous.....they made the malignaggi fight seem close.....they said round 10 was close :lol1: .... a fucking joke...very negative against EVERYONE...i hate Hatton...but those guys were overly critical...
They were actually fairly honest. Paulie and Hatton each put on rather boring/lame performances. I thought they were criticizing Paulie too...? Talking about how he was standing right in front; moving in straight lines; not working angles; and basically just not fighting a smart fight. I kind of liked the honesty about the fighters weak performance.
Chemistry between them is terrible though. they also dont offer any insight to boxing that an average fan doesnt already know. For example I really like when HBO gets a trainer (like Manny Steward) because he can give some info I would have never even thought of.
Remember it's Versus though... they dont have HBOPPV budget.
I didn't like how they were softball pitching post fight questions to Malignaggi. Larry Merchant or Jim Gray would have been more aggressive.
its funny i was actually pretty disgusted with these guys too really discrediting hattons win.
Nick Charles sounded like he was jealous of all the love Hatton receives in Manchester. In the past, he's always been a small-time operator, calling fights in places that seat a maximum of 500 people.

You're right, they were not very good. I did notice that one guy was always hating on hatton but I loved how they kept talking about Paulies hair. Each time cracked me up.

I thought they were trying very hard to raise the credibility of these two guys, Hatton and Malignaggi, fighting as some kind of superfight. I think one, Malignaggi is trying to find his way as a fighter still and hasn't been able to settle into himself as a professional. His last two fights have made him seem very vulnerable.
Hatton on the other hand looks to be a bit past his best but they wanted to make it sound like they had A1 products on their hands the whole night. I don't think they did.
Commentators have it tough when the fights they're covering suck. Both fights were kinda stale and it's understandable that they were sub-par in their commentary.
