Victory is Your Duty
The Issue
In the past seven Olympic Games, Cuba, an island nation with a population of 11 million people, has dominated the sport of boxing: 32 medals, 26 gold. Boxing has held a special place of honor in Cuban society since the Revolution, not least because Castro has deployed the nation's athletes as an unconventional tool of foreign and domestic policy. Sport propels the nation onto the world stage - allowing it to break out of economic and political isolation into a very public and superficially apolitical arena. While the country has never had the military might to challenge the U.S., it has found a way to compete inside the ropes of the boxing ring. Now, as Castro's faltering health has thrown the future into question, Cuba's athletes, as well as the rest its citizens will face a crucial time of transition. While the shift of power from Fidel to his brother Raul seems to have gone smoothly, there are some indications that changes in economic policy may lie on the horizon.
The Film
WIDE ANGLE gains intimate access to the Havana Boxing Academy on the outskirts of Cuba's capital. There, from the tender age of nine, boys hand-picked as future Olympians are molded into soldiers of the ring. They live and train at the academy with a single purpose: to bring home Olympic Gold. Victory is Your Duty follows the boys' dramatic path over eight months of training, schooling and board.

Like I said he opposed Stalinism (which was about how the Russian Revolution (communist) was betrayed by Stalin/Stalinists). George Orwell was also heavily influenced by Leon Trotsky (who also opposed Stalinism).
"Indeed, in my opinion, nothing has contributed so much to the corruption of the original idea of Socialism as the belief that Russia is a Socialist country. And so for the past ten years I have been convinced that the destruction of the Soviet myth was essential if we wanted a revival of the Socialist movement."
Not sure what you mean about "He was all for Socialism but wasn't really a Communist." Cuba isn't communist either it's socialist. In Marxist terms, socialism is simply the period of transition from Capitalism to Communism, Cuba clearly hasn't reached that point.
That point hasn't been reached, has never been reached and will never be reached. Orwell would have certainly opposed Castro, although Castro was never been quite as bad for brainwashing or making people 'disappear' as Stalinists were.
George Orwell was a Socialist himself, so I don't know if he would have opposed Castro very much. He was anti-Stalinist though, so maybe he would have seen Castro some what fall into that category, but I think it's safe to say that it's incorrect to say Castro is a "fat pig" that Orwell warned us about (he opposed capitalism and imperialism, those were his warnings)
George Orwell would have opposed Castro as well.. He was all for Socialism but wasn't really a Communist. Anyway, just by what he writes in Animal Farm you can tell he would have been completely against Castro as he was against Communist Dictatorship.

Yea man.. This was posted a while ago here.. Glad you reposted this..
It ridiculous what they do to them kids..
This was an amazing documentary, especially speaking as a Cuban. I think that they are viewed as a traitor to people who have been brainwashed by the people who are Fidelistas but most of them want to provide for their families. Great documentary again
wow....gamboa is a traitor for the cubans.
Traitor? You ever spoke to real cubans? In Cuba? If not then STFU
They all dream of getting out of there, or at least their children.
wow....gamboa is a traitor for the cubans.
amazing doc...thanks a lot for it... really tough life for those kids.
i now understand why they cant go pro, but i really wish that in the near future all this changes, cos i really would love to see more cubans on the pro ring.
btw, those kids would kick my ass xD
I don't know why ANYONE would think Raul is any different than Fidel. As a matter of fact Raul is the one who cohersed his brother into these beliefs.
you ma friend are correct! shit raul was the one who did all the killings and shit this guy is worst.
man i feel bad for the cubans man i really like them..they mad cool.
