I've never seen the fight, so I don't know how it went down. Winky has definitely proven he is the better fighter of the two, so can someone please enlighten me as to how it went down?
alot of people think wright won the fight, but vargas won by VOLUME punching. you know how wright covers up? well when he did that vargas was throwing punches, be it they weren't landing
I seem to remember Winky matching Vargas' work rate for most of the fight.
everytime i look at round 1 of taht fight, i laugh at how vargas throws 40 punches to oscar on the ropes and lands nothing.... :lol1:
He snapped Vargas' head back with jabs most of the fight too. It was probably the best De La Hoya I've ever seen.

I happen to think his fight with Oscar wast very close on paper either. He probably won 2-3 rounds out of the 11.
It was just his agressiveness that made it look closer imo.

wow..winky lost 2 of the last 3 rounds(lets forget that winky forced the action the first 9...) i guess that loses you a fight you won 7-8 clear rounds....
goddamn with the vargas won the later rounds bullshit...the 11th round was one of the clearest rounds for winky...he gave up the 10th and was maybe too defensive in the 12th...
the people who thought winky didnt clearly win this fight must be the same people who thought he lost the 12th round to taylor...when even backpedaling, he threw, landed and overall did more than taylor...
He got beat down by both. Neither fight was close.

I'd like to go through this fight round by round because I just cant see how anyone could give Vargas 7 rounds. Just cant see it. Too bad it's impossible to find.
Winky lost a close fight. Winky was the verteron fighter yet it was the young and little experianced fighter in Vargas that pushed and pushed in the later rounds, in which earned him a victory.
One thing of not should be that Vargas was going through a court case that had him going to court the following week after the Vargas v. Winky fight. To say Vargas was in 100 percent against Winky would be a lie. But Vargas heart and will proved too much for Winky.
It was the same Winky that fought Mosley, that fought Taylor. Its just that Vargas was that good.

I seem to remember Winky taking the 12th anyway. Vargas just upped his work rate. Winky was still landing the cleaner blows. Especially is body punches.
Cosign that...You forgot to mention the LOADED GLOVES of Trinidad as well........ DLH had the only credible win over him and thats because he faded down the stretch.....I agree.. he was definitely pushed too far and too fast.
jesus.wheres the proof of the loaded gloves.give me a link.no bullshit gossip mongering from hopkins people who tried to do what billy costello tried to do to arguello vs trinidad.show me proof.
He "beat" Winky because Winky took his foot off the gas down the stretch and Vargas was able to outhustle him.
That's the way I saw it, although when the fight was over I thought Winky was going to get his hand raised.
Youth and potential. and he wasted his potential, but he was a warrior so imo it was worth it. Vargas was on top of his shit back then..and here I was hugging David reids nuts circa 97
LOL, most wont admit so much. "Your a credit to the humen race."
winky hasn't proven shit. Vargas was as good of a young fighter as there has ever been in this sport. I put him second behind mike tyson. He was mis-managed. Vargas had great potential and was living up to it. They made a mistake by bringing him up too fast. He had great wins at such a young age he beat campas, raul marquez, winky, and ike quartey all before the age of 22. After that people were wanting to see him in with the big boys. there was no need to fight anyone else as he had already shown that he is one of the best fighters in the division even at his young age. Then they matched him up with felix trinidad in a much anticipated fight. Trinidad's power was too much for vargas. But Vargas gave tito all he can handle!! Vargas i believe was the first person to knock tito down. Somethign de la hoya and pernell whitaker couldnt do. Also the vargas fight was alot more exciting than the pernel and dlh fight. If you want to see a vargas fight watch the quartey fight and watch the tito fight. Even though he lost to tito that fight showed the power, the aggresiveness and warrioness of fernando vargas. I believe he beat winky right he was beating him to the punch. Winky had his moments but vargas was young and aggresive and winky always cries after he losses.
