Gamboa, who won a gold medal for the Cuban boxing team at the 2004 Olympic Games, had to earn his 10-round decision over Jimenez. Gamboa got too cocky and Jimenez dropped him in the fourth round, causing more than a few anxious moments in his corner. After the fight, Gamboa's promoter, Ahmet Öner of Arena Boxing, fired Gamboa's trainer, Osmiri Fernandez, in the dressing room.
"Gamboa knows everything about boxing. He doesn't need somebody to teach him boxing," Öner said. "He needs someone he can respect as his trainer and someone to teach him to respect his opponents. He needs someone he will listen to."
Öner said they will begin a search for a new trainer. Meanwhile, Luis De Cubas, who runs the American operation for Arena Boxing, said they want to get Gamboa back in the ring on June 27. De Cubas also acknowledged he'd had some concerns that Jimenez would be too big a step up for Gamboa.
"I know Darling Jimenez is a rugged guy," De Cubas said. "This was a very big step up for him. It's not the type of fight I would want to give him with only nine fights, but when you get a chance to fight on HBO, you take who they say. The cream always rises to the top. I feel like he rose to the top with his performance."
This was from ESPN, good move from Öner. Mayweather Sr. is the way to go.
ha ha I knew when his trainer was more concerned about sponging his tongue then getting his guard up there was an issue. shit was weird!
Lol I was just about to post the something along the same lines. That dirty ass sponge was rubbed all over Gamboa's sweaty body, which Jimenez also sweated all over.
i just watch the fight, and i agree that gamboa should not drop his hands like that. or at least dont do it when he gets on the inside. there were lots of times that he threw punches and was getting on the inside but when he was on the inside he was still with his hands down and was not protecting with his shoulder. or when he finished a combination he finishes with his hands down.
Barrera was able to make the adjustments necessary to fight consistently against top competition. With Gamboa's athleticism we can hope he will be more amenable to taking similar steps.
i hope so but i'm kind of pessimistic about his future tbh
i think Gamboa is little too old to drastically improve now

I think it would be best for Gamboa to adopt aspects of Floyd's defence (shoulder roll), but his style is not suited for a defensive approach to boxing. He is more Leonard than Mayweather, and a Whitaker/Jones approach to defense that doesn't detract from letting his hands go would seem best.
That's a good point. He's an offensive minded fighter, his new trainer shouldn't make him overly defensive.

I hope so. Because damn he made me nervous at times with his hands being so low. If the right trainer comes in and does make improvements he's going to be really tough to beat by anybody.
Agreed. Hopefully he can.
mayweather sr. is a defensive genuis and thats just what gamboa means, his trainer got him into that horrible habit of dropping his hands relying compleatly on his foot speed, which left him in the dark sat night when he got layed out by darling in the fourth.
I don't think you can blame his trainer for that, Gamboa is the source of the habit - as for the reason for its persistence, more likely you can (as noted) blame Gamboa's lack of respect for said trainer.
I think with the right trainer and enough dedication, he can correct his flaws.

Kind of a harsh move by Oner to fire the guy in the dressing room after a fight where Gamboa basically totally dominated. With that said though it was probably a good move. Mayweather Sr. would seem to be a good fit since he's defensive oriented and with Gamboa's athleticism that shoulder roll would be a nice defense for him. I just wonder since he's fought this way for over 400+ fight's and done well, it might be hard for him to change.

If Gamboa knows everything there is to know about boxing he would keep his hands up. The dudes 26, I learnt how to keep my hands up the first day I stepped into the gym. If he can't keep his hands up with his experience in the amateurs, he aint never going to.
