I was very impressed with Gamboa tonight. Keep in mind, he made several HUGE leaps tonight.
1. He made a HUGE leap up in class.
2. He made a HUGE leap up in distance.
3. He made a HUGE leap up in pressure.
With all of these things in mind, Yuriorkis Gambo performed absolutely brilliantly. Granted, he showed some rough edges that need polishing, but considering the circumstances...
Once again, keep in mind, this was his FIRST 10 round fight. His FIRST fight against a truly world class opponent. All this on his FIRST appearance on HBO, and all this in his 10th pro fight.
Gamboa once again put on a dazzling display of hand speed and combination punching. He displayed power, poise, and amazing footwork.
Most importantly, he showed that he CAN take a punch, CAN go ten rounds, and CAN deal with a tough opponent that can punch.
Obviously he will need to make some adjustments, but that is what seasoning is for. There is no such thing as a fighter able to compete on the truly elite level in their 10th pro fight.
I would like to see him hook up with a trainer like Floyd Mayweather Sr. or Roger Mayweather.
So at this point, who is the better prospect, Khan or Gamboa?
EDIT: I think Khan, at five years younger and with slightly less natural ability giving him that vital bit of humility and the desire and neccessity to learn, it is Khan who will do the best long term. I envisage Gamboa having a future as a 'talented but flawed' fighter.
Gamboa, I'm not that impressed by Khan.

Gamboa has talent. No doubt. But I'm telling you, that looping left hook he finishes his combos with, and repositions to a orthodox fighters right side? Someone's going to figure that out if he doesn't correct it, and blast him with a right cross. The defense needs some work.
But he has a lot to work with. Great talent.
Darling is a world class fighter his best win was a KO over former champ Mike Anchondo...thats pretty much world class especially for someone to fight him on their 10th pro fight....I also heard Jimenez was fucking around and not training like he was suppose to and in the clubs smoking and drinking....
Jiminez had ONE good win with Mike Anchondo (FORMER champ). And if you look at Anchondo's resume, it's not so sparkling. Jiminez also hadn't boxed in well over a year.
That being said, this WAS a BIG step up from where Gamboa had been fighting. Hopefully he improves his defense and steps it up even another notch in his next fight.

What fight were you watching? Not even a mention of his defensive woes? Looks like someone has an agenda.
I noticed that too, it looked like after 4 or 5 rounds most of the snap from his punches were gone.
I agree. That is one thing he needs to work on. I think he just realized that he would run out of steam if he kept setting down on everything. I was worried that he was setting an unrealistic pace for himself, but when he stopped punching with intent, he settled down into a nice "Groove".
I suspect that if Gamboa doesn't take his opponent out early he basically is an arm puncher who doesn't have that much power. As often as he hit Jimenez he never came close to taking him out.

Well, I guess I was proven wrong but those people you mentioned better have won there 10 fights. In either case, Gamboa is a great prospect if not the best out currently in my opinion. :boxing:

True he hit him with some good shots in those later rounds and Jiminez really didn't seem really hurt. His face showed the effects though.
who in history has fought harder opponents then Gamboa in there first 10 opponents? Name one person :boxing:
Leon Spinks, Saensak Muangsurin, Davey Moore...
Jimenez is not a world class fighter, like silencers said, but he was certainly a significant step up in class.
Mike Anchondo hasn't been right since he came in soft against Barrios and got blown the fuck out. Definitely not a marker of world-class status.

I agree Gamboa looked pretty good. Maybe not that absolute spectacular performance but pretty good nonetheless. I just worry about how he keeps his hands so low. He did have them up at times, but he left himself wide open.
