I think Gamboa has plenty of talent, but he is very sloppy. I predict he will not make the grade at elite level, he is 26 years old and should be taking a more professional attitude.
Thoughts?
He reminded me of Naseem Hamed at times, it looked like he was playing around and times. He needs to take these fights serious, alot of people don't like that clowning around stuff.
That's a good comparison.
Gamboa looked great offensively and his nickname fit at times, because he was like a cyclone sometimes preventing Jimenez from punching back. I have to give some credit to Jimenez he took a straight beating with his face all jacked up and he was game to fight. The thing about Gamboa is though I worry about him keeping his hands up, I felt before that he's reflexes and foot speed were so fast that he could overcome that, but tonight showed he can be vulnerable at times. I just see a better fighter with power possibly catching him since he keeps his hands so low. I agreed with Max somebody like Linares at this point would beat him, but give him a few more fights and he should be ready.
I'm not too impressed. Slick and fast for sure... but he doesn't have a wealth of power, he doesn't really box or use his jab at all, I think somebody could decapitate him if they bothered throwing uppercuts, and he needs to learn some actual defense.
However, given the tools he has shown if he really focuses he could be the real deal.
edit: I wouldn't be shocked if in the future he would test positive for something illegal, whether it be coke or steroids. He also better move up in weight soon or get rid of a little bit of that muscle.
I agree with everything you say about this. I don't think he looks the type of fighter who is going to make the improvements. If he did, then he would have every chance of doing great things, although I don't think he is in the different class that some believe he is.
I think his defense is good. His problem is that he hasn't been humbled yet. He has complete disregard for his opponents, almost annoyed by their primitve skills. That's what can get him in trouble. Maybe a humbling experience or two would help his cause. Those experiences didn't help Zab though. We'll see it's his only 10th fight and is Jimenez better than Mosquera? What do you guys think?
Based on Vicente Mosquera's win over Yoda 3K & performance against Valero, I'd have to say no. I never saw very much of Mos before that, but he came out and handled a tough motherfucker in Yoda. Pretty bizarre fight, but entertaining fight with the knockdowns and antics of the fighters. The third round was excellent, as both men were hurt and both men were throwing bombs.
Mos was a better, more versatile puncher. He was also a bigger man than Jimenez. He would have given Gamboa a harder fight than Darling, I'm certain of that.
Also, we all talk about him like he is this youthful prospect, but he is 26. Not too many years left to do his learning, especially for a fighter who relies so much on natural gifts.

His defense might not be that great, but why does it matter if no one can land a punch on him? Did you not see how he moved his body so Jiminez couldn't land most of his punches. He can work on his defense over time, for his 10th fight thats mighty impressive, and some of you are trying to act like he should be able to beat manny right now. Of course he's not ready for someone as experienced as them, but what he showed tonight was impressive. So far he is more entertaining then Floyd in my opinion and throws alot of punches, I rather an offensive fighter like Gamboa then some guy like floyd who is so defensive and dull that we barely get to see a fight.
i said it before, and ill say it again, gamboa has become the most overhyped fighter in boxing right now...
They should hold back on fast tracking him. The wrong opponent will knock his cocky ass out. Give him at least a year and another 4 or 5 fights.
Well.......
Manny Pac or Valero knocks him out cold.....
I need to see more.
He will probably fight with his hands up now , but still he got up pretty fast
Sloppy? He was landing fast snappy punches thruout the fight,it was his 10th pro fight and he won 9 outa 10 rounds against Darling Jiminez,a very good fighter who could beat a couple of contenders and prospects in boxing,Gamboa has star written over him,he can be a champ, hes very strong mentaly,he was calm throughout the whole fight,he just cant get too cocky
I should clarify, defensively he is sloppy, offensively he is crisp.

Gamboa's style looks to me like a cross between Roy Jones and James Toney, but he is no Roy Jones in terms of athleticism and speed, and he is no James Toney in terms of being hard to hit. He also does not have the respect for his opponent that both of those fighters had.
As it stands, he would be wasted by any of the current champs or contenders at 130 or 135.
As of this moment I rate Amir Khan as the better prospect, he is 5 years younger, and while not as naturally talented as Gamboa, is not far behind, and appears much more professional in his approach.
He did way better then I expected, he passed my expections!!! He looked great!!! He took on a good fighter for his 10th fighter!!! And people are dissing him because he got knocked down by a good fighter? Wtf???

It's only his 10th fight, no shit hes not ready for them yet but he is great for his 10th fight!!!
