I am ashamed of the behaviour of some English fans (I'm English and I have to hold my hand up and say that we are worse than the Celts at this sort of thing) booing the US National anthem; the booing was absent in the Calzaghe fight, but back here in the UK the Witter fight showed us up. As English, we are used to trading chants over the terraces, but the US anthem is generally held with more affection by its people than God Save the Queen is by the Brits, especially the celts, who have their own (much better imo) anthems; we should respect that.
So my plan...If you are the away fighter and your anthem gets booed, not just an odd cat call, but properly booed, the referee should be given the discretion to deduct a point.
Yes I know there are flaws in this, like what level of booing is needed, but maybe just the threat of sanctions may be enough??
The fighter is not responsible for the behavior of his fans
good point kaygay. so why did we all have a 5 year ban from europe because of the behaviour of the fuckin scousers?????? I was at the fight the booing was not that bad, bradley was well applauded after fight by the brits. he put on a good show. well done!!!!
fighters that go abroad to fight should expect this kind of thing, but, a boxer shouldnt get a point taken away because of the fans, its just not good policy
If points were deducted for booing national anthems, in Vegas people would be booing their own anthem every fight.
No kidding. And how in the hell are you going to penalize a fighter for what some fans do?
Have any Americans raised this subject due to the Witter fight?
Im just wondering why its been brought up if no one really gives a shit.
Booing is just stupid pantomime and isnt considered a serious insult. Jeering or shouting insults at another nations national anthem would be far worse. Its just a bunch of drunken fans pissing about.
It shouldnt be taken so seriously IMO.
u obviously didnt think of the repercussion of this thought. :nonono:
Its just interesting to get everyone's thoughts, I know there would be no practical way of enforcing it, however some common-sense publicity by the promoter of a travelling fighter should control it - the Calzaghe Hopkins crowd behaviour vs Mayweather Hatton shows this; someone came up with the theory that Cortez was so pissed with the Hatton fans that he didn't let Ricky fight - This may or may not be true, other threads have done that theory to death, BUT it is clear that the travelling fans believed it as they were as quiet as mice during the SSB. If you are Welsh, you could put this down to Celtic British fans generally being better behaved than their Anglo Saxon counterparts, but I still think whoever came up with the alleged link of Cortez and the crowd did Joe C a favour...
I agree, I could do with out the anthems. These fighters spend 45 minutes breaking a sweat to get warmed up backstage. Then they each take fifteen minutes to get to the to the cold ring and listen to all the announcements and the two horribly long national anthems (how bad was tom jones? look like he was already dead and embalmed). By the 30 - 45 minute circus it is all said and done their sweat is gone and they are cold and stiff. Makes no sense to me.

Tim Berners-Lee is English.
Hence the indecisive.....wait
But anyway, I thought the Mayweather family invented the internet. It would explain the obscene amount of mayweather nughuggers about.
Who cares if the anthem was written by a Brit.
Yeah, well, the Internet was invented by an American anyway. And what would you be doing without the internet? The only thing you would be surfing is your.....wait

It's not the fighter's fault if the fans are complete douche bags, he shouldn't be penalized for it. I agree national anthems should be banned from sports.
I wouldnt say the fans are "doucebags". I would just say the fans are showing passion by cheering on their own fighter and booing the other one.
Nah, fuck that! Who cares if it gets booed. The British fans booed the American anthem for the Hatton vs. Mayweather fight and look where it got them, with Hatton getting bounced off the turnbuckle and getting KTFO. It had no effect on the outcome of the fight.
The thing is, the anthem is not getting boo'd because it represents America, its getting boo'd because it represents the fighter.
Go to an English football match and listen to opposite teams, boo, chant, and scream insults at each other.
Just dont take it to your heart so much.
its ok to do it to yanks
their national anthem was written by a brit anywAY LOL!
we have the right to boo

I have a better idea: Ban douchebags from singing the US national anthem. The phrase "Oh say can you see" has five syllables, not thirty five.
LOL I'm sure the musical score was not written for the bollocks warbling of some third rate R & B singer!!!! It would sound much better if sung by a proper singer
Oh yes .. The boxer should be punished for someone else's actions.. That's Just Brilliant..
Are you fucking retarded??? What Pile of Leftist communist tripe..
That's a bit harsh my friend! It was just something to throw out whilst I was bored!! The idea would be that they wouldn't fuck up their own fighter's chances. I agree that a ban on national anthems would probably be better, but hey WTF.
I am more interested on how you would connect the original posting with any political bias, because you are way off the mark on that one - you'd be more likely to catch me with the Telegraph than the Guardian. I expected more of you given your previous postings p.s. bring back the Elric avatar
