Forgot to mention that.. Bernard Hopkins was booed when his name was announced along with Mike Katsidis, Alexis Arguello, Juan Manuel Marquez and others. Hopkins was the only celebrity or athlete who was booed during Michael Buffer's hype trim fanfare for the big shots in attendance.
Hopkins might just be one of, if not the, most disliked fighters in Boxing to the general public and fairweather contingent. He isn't especially popular within the community either from what I can tell. Any thoughts on that?
There were a couple of guys sitting behind me who had spent a big dough to be there and they were talking about how Bernard had beaten Jones and lost to Tarver.. I walked around the Home Depot Center at several points during the 4 or so hours I was there and didn't manage to stumble into one Boxing fan - but they hated Hopkins for some reason.. LOL. Nobody knew jack shit about Boxing. Sylvester Stallone got the loudest reaction. There was virtual silence when they announced Katsidis - and outrageously; Alexis Arguello. No reaction at all for Arguello.. I was dumbfounded. And insulted.
Sorta made me wonder what kind of reception Floyd Mayweather or some of the other active champions and fighters would have gotten in front of almost 30,000 in Southern California..
Hopkins isnt a popular guy...what can i say? he's racist; a trash talker who comes across as a prick in general...and not a likeable guy for most...i think other than the racism he's decent and shouldnt be booed (unless thats what they booed about)...
And to answer your question i think being that it was oscar hometown (or practically oscar's hometown) floyd would have gotten booed as well (especially considering majority if not all in attendance were oscar de la hoya fans)...
I was thinking his racial comment may have created the stir.
He was, SS. I was livid.. Couldn't believe it./quote]
I felt the same way in Las Vegas once when there wasn't any applause for a warrior like Iran Barkley (who KO'd Tommy Hearns in Las Vegas), and then a second rate rock star like Sammy Hagar got a big ovation.
I hear you, Scott. It's insulting.
Alexis Arguello got blanked? :nonono:

LOL...Stallone got by far the biggest reaction at Hopkins vs. Calzaghe as well during Buffer's celebrity name calling...people seem to forget that he never actually was a boxer.
HaHA.. True. He must have said the Rocky business there as well.
Addison, btw. he didn't land more than three clean punches on Joe. Those were not hard ones.
If he fought with a little more enthusiasm he'd have some fans
I know you're kidding.. HaHA.. Hopkins landed half a dozen good hard shots in the 6th round alone. How many times have you rewatched it? Any?

Sheeple are stupid, that is a fact.
Hopkins does care, he's a human being. But whether he thinks it's worth being booed for the amount of money he makes because of it is another matter.
It's sad that boxing has become a farse like UFC. It's quite astonishing that you didn't encounter one single boxing fan while you were there.
Celebreties wants to be associated with violence it seems. Kinda sad.
Stallone is an exception.

Bullshit he landed quite a few good straight right hands.
Spent 12 rounds chasing Hopkins

He's never had a huge following, and recently, he hasn't tried to garner one. He's content with who he is.
At the end of the day, fans hate a guy who doesn't try to win them over. It makes them feel unappreciated.
He talks trash, his style is tricky and hard on the casual fan, hes a rugged looking man, and he himself doesnt care that he is disliked, hopkins is hopkins.
