I was lookin somewhere and it said that Lennox Lewis is still regarded as the Linear heavyweight champ. So my question is four someone to take his place since he is retired does that mean that they would have to unify the division? To be the new linear champ.
Wlad beating Chagaev would put the lineage squarely with him; some say Peter and if that rematch happened, the argument would be made but Chagaeb is probably more realistic before, oh, 2010 and Wlad already womped Peter so the onus isn't on Wlad to win that again.
Does anyone know the answer?
Nobody is the linear HW champion yet, but Wlad is close. If you are deemed by the public as the champion, then you are basically the linear champion; this only happens when the lineal champ before that retired. Wlad would start the new lineage; for example, if he had fought and beat either Chagaev or Peter, he will have unified 3 of the 4 belts and get the Ring Magazine belt; this would basically state to the public that we have one dominant HW that cleaned everybody out; this in affect would create a new linear champion.
wait, how is Zsolt Erdei the linear light heavyweight champ? Shouldn't it be Calzaghe since he "beat the man" Hopkins who beat the man Tarver who beat the man Roy Jones?
Zsolt Erdei>JC Gonzales>Dariusz Michalczewski>Virgil Hill
Roy picked up the vacant WBC belt and the WBA & IBF belts which were stripped off Michalczewski who had won them from Virgil Hill.
Where've you been buddy, Diaz got his a$$ whooped.
I know that he lost. I was making a point that Casamayor beating Corrales for the real linear title didn't matter once all the sanctioning body belts became vacant and Juan Diaz (now Nate) managed to collect them fighting Paper champs.

Roy gave up his titles when he went to HW to fight Ruiz. When he came back down, he never got a chance to win the linear title back.
And that's where most fans have a problem with sanctioning bodies.
When people speak of not knowing who the champ is.
If there was only one title like in the old days, Erdei would be the only champ and everybody else contenders.
Casamayor would be the only lightweight champ and everybody else contenders. But no, when you have a Juan Diaz strapping himself with 3 body belts.....Casamayor is a non factor.

Tszolt Erdei is supposed to be the linear LHW champ, go figure. I think it's lost it's value.
