I was at the Home Depot Center. I was expecting to see threads praising the courage of Steve Forbes when I got back to Boxingscene, but instead what I found was a great deal of criticism aimed at Oscar De La Hoya and his performance. That's mostly what it seemed like I saw when I logged on.
The Boxing media seems impressed with Oscar's show.. How do you see it?
Odd as it seems there appears to be two versions of the story here. Polar opposite. One group of people think De La Hoya looked old, tired, and shot. The other group believes he looked sharp, fluid, and impressive.
Oscar looked like Oscar to me! straight up & down, no special effects! I have NEVER wanted or cheered for DLH to EVER win a fight! but he looked far from a shot fighter!
I'm somewhere in between. I think he looked good, don't know about being his old sharp self.
And credit to Steve Forbes, good performance from a smaller fighter.
I think that if you put it that way, given his age and slightly diminished skills he looked sharp. Definitely not shot. I think most of us are comparing him to his best form and relating what we saw to how he'll do in the rematch. I think what we saw against Forbes, raises legitimate concerns regarding how he'll do in the rematch.
i think he'll do worse against mayweather. floid got beat in the first fight by jl castillo, but in the rematch he adjusted to jlc's style and won that fight. floid does better the 2nd time around, the drag queen will look worse. steve forbes has nothing in common with floid anyway, except that they've both been trained by a mayweather, forbes isn't mentally sharp like floid. floid sticks to the plan all night, forbes goes in, maybe wins a couple rounds and then forgets the plan because he;s thinking about banging his hot wife valerie
Oscar is so shot that he couldn't do any damage to Steve Forbes. His punches had no power.
You all could make believe all you like but that's the truth. Ask any expert ( except E. Stewart)
Please point us toward one.
i think he needs to sharpen up things to fight floyd properly. he was getting caught by some shots from forbes and if that was floyd it would've been worse for him.
forbes landed some shots on DLH that caught oscars attention, there was a couple of shots that if it had been a bigger puncher, oscar would've had a big problem on his hands.........
if it was floyd that landed those shots, oscar might have tasted the canvas.....

Meaning you feel he will do worse?

I think he looked pretty good. He seemed uncomfortable at times though. His defense on the inside is lacking when he goes to the shoulder roll.
Am I the only one who would like to see De La Hoya/Margarito? After the Cotto/Marg, Oscar/Floyd matches obviously...
I think Margarito would make things real ugly for Oscar in there.:sombrero:
I agree on the defense and the Margarito thing. We might get that matchup.
He looked good for a fighter past his prime.. But evidently his performance was not in the Mayweaher or Cotto level.. A fight with P4P is meaning less we already know was is going to be the outcome!!
steve forbes isnt really the kind of fighter that can help you determine this. the only thing quick about forbes are his hands. everything else is average.

Somewhere in between. Clearly he ain't at his best, nor is he shot. I think it's safe to suggest his best days are behind him but he still has something left in the tank. I don't think he has enough to beat Mayweather. That's the important question.

i thought he looked like he could beat on 99% of fighters at 147 if he could actually get down to it.
i thought Stevie was just outgunned and no shame in that.
ill be a fan of both fighters from now on.
De La Hoya looked sharp, but I don't think that translate into having a live shot at Mayweather or Cotto. He basically beat a handpicked opponent like he was supposed to.
Agree with this and other posts like it. Of course De La Hoya looked good beating Forbes, that was the whole point. We are just being fooled into thinking he has a live shot at Mayweather. He's not shot, but old, definitely.
While I think his shot is too strong of a word, I would say far from his prime is a better way of putting it. He was very dissapointed in his performance, you could see in his eyes a man who had come to a realization that his better days are over. That's not going to stop him from going on with his plans, but the way things are going his career is going to end in a very ugly way.
While I like too give some credit to Stevie Forbes, prime Delahoya would have knocked him out inside of five.
For further context purposes regarding use of the term "sharp" I'll remind folks that De La Hoya has fought twice in two years, and only a handful of times in the last five or so. Sharp; as in sharp factoring in actual reality. :lol1: Damn.
