I'll tell you...
I'm watching Mayweather-Corrales (yes I know it's at 130, not 135) and Floyd looks just absolutely fantastic. Seriously, he looks almost perfect. Great jab, excellent combinations, fantastic elusivity, he had it all.
Although he struggled with Castillo at 135, he did well in his other two fights. I wish he would have stayed down there and fought Casamayor, Freitas, Lazcano, etc.
There would be no talk about ducking whoever I don't think. I think Floyd has a right to not want to fight Cotto, probably because Cotto is a giant next to him, but Floyd really has put himself in that boat by entering into 147. If you are going to claim the lineal championship in a division, you are going to be expected to fight the best in that division.
135 didn't even really fall off when most of the good fighters previously mentioned left. We now have Nate Campbell, Juan Diaz, Julio Diaz, Kid Diamond, etc.
I don't know, what do you all think about this? How cool would it have been if Floyd had stayed at 130 until the Chavez fight (when he said he couldn't make that limit anymore), and then never have left 135?

He wasn't going to get De La Hoya or even Hatton kind of money staying at 135. That's all it was. Higher weight classes get higher purses.
Jr. was/is the best boxing talent of our era - minus RJJ. The man is a boxing craftsman and is one of those, because of his personality, love to hate boxers. You CANNOT take away from what that man is and will always be - a ****ing beast in the divisions he roamed. I don't care what division you put him in, within reason, he is a clear and cut favorite to win/dominate. Floyd Mayweather Jr., given we all still love to debate him, is one of boxings elite talents that may go unparalleled for many years to come. The reason, so many of us, hate sometimes, is because his boxing genious leaves SO much to be desired. I, for one, don't blame him one bit. With his ego, why not go out on top and look back to those who hate and repeat that to them? I just think, sometimes, when us fans love a fighter so much or are taken back by something truly great, we feel they should keep entertaining us forever and if they don't, well, look at what happens. Floyd, as it stands, has really never had a bad fight - never been hurt - never lost, etc. etc. - - - What more do you look for out of boxing going into it? Let's not forget to mention he is filthy ****ing rich lol. I really think Floyd, had he stayed, would not have met his match from 130-154. Not even close IMO. Not until he reached MW, with considerable height, weight, power, etc., would he have even been tested IMO. Even at MW, I would still, inside, find it hard to bet against him. I think the man, personally, is a prick and a loud mouth who almost ASKS for shit to happen to him - but - make no mistake about it, 130-154 - - - bring who you want, Floyd will be walking away the winner.
P.S. I really don't like Jr. at all - I just call them how I see them.
No, Im sure of it. Just like SSM cant make 135 anymore.you just cant, thats why fighters move up. Floyd has fought maybe 3-4 opponents his whole career that were "bigger" then him. do the research....:puppy_dog
what a dumb thread
This is an old post, but it's notable for its absolute stupidity and ignorance.
Watch the damn fights and check the fight night weights: Floyd was outweighed by Mitchell, Judah, Hernandez, Juuko, Gerena and I'm sure many others by 4-5 pounds or more. JLC, Corrales, Gatti, Baldomir, ODLH, and N'Dou all outweighed him by more than 10 pounds in the ring. Oh...but Floyd never fought bigger fighters.
good thread.. i think if he would of stayed at 135, he would probably beat everyone that came in his path.. casa-may would of been a really good fight.. i think alot people forget he was an absolute beast at the lower weight divisions.. the lightweight divisions are his natural weight classes and of course he had to change his style and adjust to fighting much bigger fighters at these higher weight classes..
i couldnt have said it any better,,this man knows what hes talking about
You can't deny that he had a few more fights though...
He had some damn good challengers at 135 too, certainly better than the fighters he fought at 140.
Casamayor, Freitas, Lazcano (yeah he actually was a credible threat at 135)...
It works out well for Floyd that Castillo ended up on top of the foursome that included him, Corrales, Freitas and Casamayor though.
He cant even make 140 anymore, hence him fighting Ricky at 147. :puppy_dog
You don't think any of that had to do with him trying to bulk up so he could fight at 147/154? I said he should have stayed at 135. Not that he should move back down.
You can't honestly tell me that you think Floyd grew from a 130 pounder to a legitimate 147 pounder in just 7 fights, can you?

Looks like you got your "I'm a prick" statement in for the day. Kudos.
Anyway, thanks for reading the original post, because so much of it is about him moving back down to 135...

Fighters move up in weight for 5 reasons.
1.Money
2.Champion Belt collecting
3.Money
4.Dominance
5.Inability to maintain weight due to natural increases.
i like the first four for money man.
Horus, as always, does make some valid points about Floyd Mayweather. I have yet to see a succinct defence of the so-called "double standard". It is absolutely true that Mayweather's capture of titles across huge differences in weight classes is massively impressive, and also true that no matter how much people deride the idea, Mayweather will, in the end go down as an all time great. I think many on boxingscene should take a look at their attitudes and opinions towards Mayweather and ask themselves whether or not they have anything to do with him as a boxer, or have more to do with his questionable personality and the natural hatred that seems to spring up in some people whenever they consider a truly dominant sportsman.
As for Floyd's weight, it is crazy to try and pretend that he is not a small welterweight, he is, especially in a division full of weight drained JMW and MWs. At the moment Floyd is a natural 140lb fighter, I would say, but one who can box convincingly anywhere reasonably above that limit.
I think Mayweather should get more respect than he does, especially since he can do what no other active fighter can do. This is a boxing fourm after all, and Mayweather is the best boxer we have right now, so neither him nor his fans deserve the kind of hate you sometimes see on these boards.
Another excellent post! People don't appreciate what they have until it's gone. Sad but true...
Good post, man.
Floyd fighting Oscar at 154 is equivalent to Cotto fighting Joe Calzaghe right now. Brilliant!
Cotto would go down, to some, as the best fighter of all time if he beat Calzaghe by SD.
Yet, Floyd wins a title in his 5th weight class and he's dissed incessantly. LOL
Thats why when it's all said and done Floyd will be one of the greatest fighters to ever do it, if not the greatest....
If you look at it.....
For People to consider Floyd being in a Fair Fight....
1. The Guy has to be bigger than Floyd
2. Cant be the Same Size Height and weight
3. Floyd cant fight nobody Smaller than him under no circumstances
4. Floyd cannot fight no bigger fighters in higher weight division who are not ranked at least #1 or #2 in the division...FOR IT TO BE CONSIDER A REAL CHALLENGE
i.e (Pacquiao vs. David Diaz)
WHAT KIND OF STANDARDS are Those to put on a Fighter....
for example If Floyd fought Felix Sturm right now for the middle weight title I bet people will give Floyd shit.....Saying that this is not a fair fight....
not taking into account that, that would be Floyd's 6Th weight class and Him fighting The WBA Champion.. and also Floyd would also probably be outweigh.... by 20 pounds come fight night night..!!
The standards beset on Floyd are so unreasonable that If you even trying to mention to place those kinda standards on someone else....You would sound crazy....
For example....
What if I say Cotto would have to go up 5 weight classes and get 6 titles
Mostly the WBC Belts while staying undefeated....
before I even consider Cotto to be in the same sentence as Mayweather.....
Would that be unreasonable...
Because Cotto started @ 140
so he would go up to LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT
and capture titles at all weights proceeding LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT while staying undefeated... Before I would I consider him a great fighter like Floyd....
How would Cotto Fans Accept those standards.......
But guess what That what Floyd has Done.......To be consider the greatest of his generation and P4P Best Today...
He came from 130
and has gotten titles from
130
135
140
147
154
While Staying Undefeated....
NO OTHER FIGHTER IN HISTORY HAS EVER DONE THIS....!!! NOT ONE
Not
Sugar Ray L, Tommy Hearns, Roberto Duran, Bernard Hopkins, Julio Cesar Chavez, Pernell, Marvin Hagler, Aaron Pryor, Willy Pep, Roy Jones,
Sugar Ray Robinson....NOBODY....
This is why Floyd Fans say Thats when it's all said and done Floyd will be one of the greatest fighters to ever do it, if not the greatest....

Hours can Floyd still make 135 or 140?
Yes he can make 140....
he came into his last fight at 147
You meaned to tell me he cant lose 7 pounds...
And if he can make 140 he can make 135.....
what is 5 pounds...???
Shit Cotto came into the ring at 157 verse "CHOP CHOP"
And that was a fight at "140"
Cotto was and is starving himself to make 140 and 147....and he was still good at the divisions
So what are you trying to say....Floyd cant lose 12 pounds to make 135...
or 7 pounds to make 140....
What are you trying to say..??

What people forget is that.....at 130lb the commentators actually called Floyd a BIG puncher.
Definately not in the Corrales fight. He was referred to as the boxer against the puncher, who obviously was Corrales.
I still don't think Floyd was a knockout artist at 130. I think he was more like a Zab Judah puncher (at 140 or 147). The proof in the pudding is that he really never knocked someone out... by that I mean, pretty much every time, the opponent got up. Really big punchers usually are able to put people down for the 10 from time to time, but Floyd never really did.
He could still punch pretty well at 130 though.
Don't forget Hector Camacho. He was a hell of a good junior lightweight. Gomez on the other hand, was totally washed up when he was at that weight.
Yeah, like I said, I'm terrible with history. I just know that Gomez was a great fighter (at 122), and I remember Camacho not having a single good second against Chavez so...
That list wasn't made well.
floyds best weight class would have been 140, no way he stays at 135 his body wont allow him, as it is he is now a legite 147 pounder do we have to weight till we start hearing about his weight problems before people belive he is a natural 147 pounder? The guy is always in shape, thats not normal for a fighter, Mayweather may be doing what Hopkins did and eat a strick diet day in and day out.
I don't know if he would have had to move up to 140 at any point if he hadn't chosen to. He is still very small, and I think the bulking up that he has done was voluntary for the most part, because he needed to get bigger to fight in those bigger weight classes.
But still, he could have done some major damage at 140 by the time he would have had to move up (too bad no one good would have been there by the time he got there, other than Hatton). If he could have stayed at 135, there would have been a multitude of great fighters to fight.
Speed was a great part of his game. But he wasn't as fast as some of you make it out to seem. He had problems with brawlers, inside fighters. Chavez had speed at the light weights and had power with an iron chin to go along. Funny thing is Floyd has been tested at 130 and 135 this is the truth. Of course people will make him out to be superman and forget these details. The guy in your avatar was a great fighter too but your opinion he wouldn't trouble Mayweather? I've heard before a Chavez came along he was similar on the East Coast -latin legends.
Floyd was never tested at 130. His closest fight was against Jesus Chavez, and I didn't even find that fight particularly close. The counterpunches that Floyd landed in that fight were unreal. Chavez put on one of the guttiest performances I have ever seen though.
Castillo clearly tested Mayweather at 135.
no.i don't think any of them do.he was too fast there.maybe arguello maybe.
