As much as I like Steve Forbes, he is a light welterweight at best fighting Oscar at 154. In his twilight years he wants the big fights thus he wanting to fight Mayweather again. However, NOBODY wants to see Mayweather/De La Hoya II and a big fight with someone in his own weightclass that has some big names would be more prudent for Oscar. So tell me, who would you rahter he be fighting this weekend?
I WANT TO SEE DE LA HOYA v. MAYWEATHER II...
I thought it was a very close fight first time around and believe the rematch is warranted. My only complaint is the timing of such a rematch...
the rematch should have taken place in august or september (and push the hatton fight to probably jan/feb) instead of waiting so long when now we all want to see mayweather v. cotto.
The rematch is definately called for. No one (in the pros) has fought mayweather so closely (in the judges eyes)...infact i dont think floyd has ever even been in a fight involving a split decision up until the first de la hoya fight.
upon watching the fight live on sopcast i had it 115-113 de la hoya (but the picture was a bit choppy) so when i downloaded the fight and later watched clearly on DVD i scored it 114-114 every time since then (and i've rewatched and rescored that fight 15 times and each time its 114-114 and the rounds are give to each fighter exactly the same)...
oscar wins: 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 12
floyd wins 1, 3, 5, 9, 10, 11
it never changes so i think the rematch is fair. it would be better at a different time is all.
however if i could pick one fighter to see oscar fight for his tune-up other than forbes it would be paulie malignaggi. And no im not saying it because im italian...
The reason i think oscar should have had his tune-up against malignaggi is because paulie is the closest resemblence to mayweather anywehere near 147. Paulie isn't nearly as talented or good as mayweather is but he's just as fast; slick; and a very good pure boxer...he's what i consider to be the B-level version of floyd. no other current fighter is more similar to floyd than paulie.
biggest differences are power (paulie has even less than floyd), raw talent/ability, skill level...
beyond that they are pretty similar and remind me of each other. oscar should be getting a tune-up with someone that resembles mayweather...to help him prepare for mayweather's speed, reflexes, pure boxing ability, quickness, etc. and paulie (in my opinion) would be the best choice.
Holy hell, i have finally rooted out someone who actually wants to see Mayweather/De La Hoya, well sir, thats all you. As for high risk low reward fights with Spinks and Forrest, two former linear Welterweight titlist that people respect, not as low reward as one my think and could help cement legacy........
im a linear man myself so I give no credence who won the belts. I believe the alphabet straps only identify the contenders in the division. So as I climb off of my highhorse, I don't mind guys like Spinks fighting De la Hoya or Forrest over the undserving alpabet titlist.
Yeah, your right. But what would be the point of fighting Spinks? High-risk, low-reward, and most likely, a boring fight. Besides, I'd like to see Verno go out on a big payday anyway; he's never had one.
And the only chance Oscar has at winning a rematch w/ Mayweather is if the fights at 154, IMO.
EDIT: I wouldn't mind if he fought Forrest though, but that's also high-risk, low reward.
So did I, but Spinks doesn't have the belt anymore, it's Verno. Let Oscar KO him so he can have a belt at 154 again.

I'd rather Vernon Forrest, but thats me. I thought Spinks beat Phillips and to be honest didn't even think of Cotto.....hmmmm good fight.
