hey, what about Sambu Kalambay? that was a damn good fighter, VERY underrated imo. Im pretty sure he was Italian...nationality wise, haha
and Italy had Miccel Piccolelli or however you spell it too...the fellow that lost to Mayorga. he had some pretty good wins.
I think the last elite fighter from italy is Nino Benvenuti, champ at 154 and 160 (as in lineal champ).
Piccirillo and Kalambay I would put on a lower level. Piccirillo robbed Spinks big time.
I am Italian, as in born and raised in Italy. I moved to the US 4 years ago. The fact that there have not been elite Italian boxers since the 70s helps staying objective ;).
I think that you already are one of the best posters here. It is very hard to get to the immense knowledge of people like yogi, cple... The best we can do is be objective and think with our heads and slowly gather knowledge by watching fights and reading about those which are not taped.
That's some high praise... thank you very much!

Piccirillo has a robbery win over Cory Spinks (I've heard). That is about it.

When I started posting here, I was sure I was going to end up on your ignore list (this is when you still had the offenses and the people who were on ignore for them). It's just good that I have moved up from that.
I just told someone that I thought you were one of the most knowledgable on here by far. Something to strive to become.
Are you American or British? I thought I knew the answer, but I'm not sure.

I was just naming other notable southpaws.
As for the comparison, Nunn was a better talent and better in his prime than the others. I actually think at his peak, he'd give quite a few of the ATG middleweights a handful and maybe upset a couple of them.
But in terms of overall accomplishment, I don't see Nunn really standing out from the others.
I agree on Nunn being an underachiever, but I would still rate his accomplishments above the others.
Again, except Byrd given his original size has accomplished quite a bit.
for all my opinion is worth:
you are learning a lot and fast, and it's remarkable how you watch fights looking at details without bias, and you watch a lot of them. Even when I don't agree with you, it's clear that you call it like you see it, and not to push forward some bullshit agenda.

Yes!

The first two people that came to mind when I saw the thread were Whitaker and Hagler.
:)

If you ever want an interesting challenge, try listing the top 10 heavyweight southpaws of all time. You might be surprised how low the bar gets (Tye Fields? :D ).

I can't seperate those two for #1. They were both so great on so many different levels.
Would you mention them on the same level as Nunn?
I personally wouldnt.
Except for Chris Byrd, who has accomplished quite a bit for a man his size.

Forgot about him. Given the quality of the fighter and his chin, Nunn's KO over Kalambay is one of the most impressive KOs ever IMO.
Reggie Johnson, Antonio Tarver, Chris Byrd, and Marvin Johnson can be mentioned as well.
